4.0 étoiles sur 5 Another Good Combatives Book from Mr. Martin 4 juin 2014
Par Steven Grogan - Publié sur Amazon.com
    Format:Broché
Last year I reviewed Mr. Martin's SELF-DEFENSE TIPS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW. While I disagreed with him on certain points, I feel that he knows what he is talking about with this topic. In this book, I find that I have fewer disagreements with him than the last time around, but let's go over what I like first.

Mr. Martin kicks off by saying without confidence, you will get nowhere in self-defense. (Not his exact phrasing, but that is the gist of it.) I agree wholeheartedly. In the mid-1990's, even though I was learning a martial art that was GREAT for street defense, my lack of confidence made me ineffective at it. Of course that begs the question, "How do you build that confidence? And even when you start trying to build it, how do you know when you have enough to really handle yourself on the street?" Unfortunately, NO ONE could write a book to give you a clear cut answer on that.

I also like how Martin goes over the flaws of his style of training (called "combatives"). Not a lot of people have the guts to do that. He is against certain kinds of scenario training. For example, say you join a school and the teacher picks you to be the person who will be attacked. The teacher says, "Okay, pretend it has been a long day at work and you are exhausted." But what if you are wide awake and well-rested? I mean, are we at acting class, or self-defense class?

Another point of agreement between us: he feels a lot of martial arts schools are sorely lacking in situations that come anywhere near what real combat would be like. Even in my wing chun school, we do a lot of chi sao, but we hardly ever do any simulations where someone is approaching us from a distance and WAY out of our combat range. It does no good to practice only forms; you have to spar.

Last but not least, Martin takes the unpopular stance (but one that I agree on) that learning martial arts automatically gives you an edge over every opponent. There is something rampant in the martial arts community: the belief that anyone of any size can beat an assailant of any size with these skills. Simply put: you can't. It is also unrealistic to believe that the same hit to the same body part of different opponents will always get the same reaction.

    Now for the disagreements!

Well, I wouldn't really call this first point a "disagreement" with his opinion in and of itself, but I think he could have used better vocabulary to express what he means. Martin talks about how one should not "overthink" body mechanics. I think it would have been better if he had approached this topic by advising people not to worry if it took a long time to develop proper body mechanics. Why? Because in a lot of styles, ESPECIALLY one like wing chun that relies on quick punches (instead of telegraphed killing blows), body mechanics is EVERYTHING. Body mechanics is what allows my Sifu (several inches shorter and several pounds lighter) to hit harder than me.

Second: the chapter on close range fighting versus keeping distance from your opponent. Wing chun trains to be in a range that is somewhere between punching and grappling range so that we could use low line kicks, elbows, knees and of course punches. Martin seems to lean more toward favoring long-range fighting. This is just a difference of preference. No one is right or wrong.

One last point: Martin also feels the head is the best target, if you want to win a fight quickly. I agree. HOWEVER, the head is also smaller and easier to maneuver. It's a lot easier to assault someone's torso and then move on to the head once the fight is going your way. After all, that's why people aim for the torso in target practice.

All in all, this is a well-rounded book.

Since high school, I have always been a martial arts buff, not because I want to hurt someone, but mainly because I only want to be able to defend myself should the moment comes. Needless to say, I have had my fill of those various martial arts or self defense books, but just when I thought I couldn’t get any real benefit from such books, I find Neal Martin’s incredibly enlightening ‘Self Defense Solutions.’ Four words: it blew my mind.

Basically, Martin’s book ‘Self Defense Solutions’ may not look very different from books of the same genre. He discusses the basics—how to become a person that criminals would like to avoid—but more importantly, he sharply defines the real meat of what self defense is all about: the approach. The author competently discusses how to vastly improve many aspects of fighting—from striking to fuelling your strikes with power and purpose—and you emerge from it thoroughly enlightened. It even discusses the wrong things you might be doing—and how to properly correct them so that next time, you won’t be such at a disadvantage.

It’s important to point out, however, that ‘Self Defense Solutions’ is a thoroughly serious book that’s meant only for people who seriously want to hone their self-defense and combat skills—this book is not for the fickle-minded or those who don’t really take martial arts seriously.

In any case, this is a gem of a self-defense book—I enjoyed reading and learning from it and now every training session I engage in is informed by what Neal Martin has taught me through his invaluable book. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to improve their skills—this also makes a great book to your loved ones and friends who may need it. A solid five-star rating for this book.

This book covers ideas and concepts of conservatives. Not a technique filled how to book, but a book of theory and concepts to help you go to the next level.
