Présentation de l'éditeur

"Great fun!" - The Miami Herald Named one of Time Magazine's top 10 graphic novels for 2013! Suzie's just a regular gal with an irregular gift: when she has sex, she stops time. One day she meets Jon and it turns out he has the same ability. And sooner or later they get around to using their gifts to do what we'd ALL do: rob a couple banks. A bawdy and brazen sex comedy for comics begins here, by Matt Fraction (Satellite Sam, Hawkeye) and Chip Zdarsky (Prison Funnies, Monster Cops). "On the surface, this is a hilarious story of two people, Suzanne and Jon, with the power to stop time after they orgasm, and then rob banks while (almost) everyone else is frozen in time, which is an amazingly original idea. But underneath that, this is a story of the beginning of a relationship: its exciting newness, its terrifying possibilities, its ups and downs, its secrets and understandings, and, of course, its sex." - PW

Cheerfully Explicit Adult Content, in the Best Sense 10 mai 2014
Par Pop Bop - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Lots of graphic novels have lots of sex. Loads of pinup style bosomy babes and so on. Eye candy. If the actual content of the novel involves sex it is often angry sex or violent sex or transgressive in some fashion. The other direction is frat boy sex and graphic versions of old sex jokes. This book is remarkably fresh, interesting and rewarding because it blends a clever plot device with two engaging adults who speak frankly and openly, but cheerfully and comfortably, about sex. It's also very funny in a sly but totally non-smarmy fashion.

The premise is that when Suzie has an orgasm, time stops and everything freezes except for Suzie who can move freely in this frozen world. When Jon has an orgasm the same thing happens. They meet and make love, and are astonished when they find they can share this frozen world. Much of the plot involves what they do during this suspended time.

But before that we follow each character, as a youth, discovering and figuring out this special ability. Then we follow Suzie and Jon's budding relationship. And this does have to be one of the best "meet cute" premises ever.

This is a coming of age story, a love story, a caper story, and a meditation on loneliness and sexual longing and satisfaction. It is funny and it is very comfortable in what it is. It is "adult" not in the movie rating sense, but in that it is wise, a bit wistful, and reflects a grown up, but still puckish, sense of humor. This book was a surprise and delight and so much more than was expected.

This TP collects the first five issues of the continuing Sex Criminals series as well as some bonus content that is actually pretty interesting.
Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the authors or the publisher of this book.

Fat Bottom Girls You Make the Rock N' Roll World Go Round 24 avril 2014
Par Anarchy in the US - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Do you remember when you secretly rubbed one out? Or when you had to sit down and give the old talk of the "birds and the bees"? C'mon, don't be shy. I say that because writer Matt Fraction and artist Chip Zdarsky is not one bit shy of discussing such topics, as well as many more other sexual talks and euphemisms. In this new offering from the writer who has done the phenomenal work currently on Hawkeye and put that same level of humor into a adult-themed comic that readers (above the age of 18, of course) should give a try.

SEX CRIMINALS VOL.1 collects issues #1-5 and stars Suzanne "Suzie", as a girl who had an early life of tragedy. Her father was gunned down randomly when she was young, and her mother went into depression afterward. One night while in the bathtub and alone, she does a first in her life by masturbating. It not only gives her a gateway to feeling intensely good, yet she also has the power to stop time, which she calls "The Quiet". So for the next few years, she struggles to find out this power and her place in the world growing up. Now a full grown adult working as a librarian, her library is about to close down due to lack of money. So she throws a party to raise money, and there she finds Jon and finds a special connection with him. And guess what? He too can stop time when he feels aroused. Both characters fall in love with each and since their daily lives suck, why not use this power to do the most logical thing? Rob banks!

Oh-did I quote that wrong? In a way, yes. There is more to it than that but I only wanted to set up the general tone of the story.

SEX CRIMINALS Vol.1 is a very unique book on the comic/graphic novel market for a good reason. Billed as a "science fiction/sexual comedy", it takes the most taboo and/or embarrassing subject matter everyone deals with and turns it into something that is humorous, ironic, and bitter sweet at the same time we can all affiliate with and laugh at. And not to mention a little difficult to explain what exactly it is. Let's elaborate a little further.

The story is divided up into two main sections. There is the current setting where Suzie and Jon are just starting to rob a bank (I'll explain that in a bit) and the other is Suzie recollecting how it got to this point, which most of the 5-issues take place. So most of the story telling we get Suzie breaking the 4th wall by talking to the readers narrating herself (from a third person perspective) and Jons stories leading up to the current robbery. The other half the time is in the present during the robbery (it is called Sex Criminals after all). Although you do find out more about the actual reason for Suzie and Jon's robbing, there are others who can stop time and yes, want to arrest Suzie and Jon because they are misusing the Quiet! These mysterious authoritative figures are the Sex Police, which we don't get any real information on these guys in this first volume, so I expect we'll learn more about them in future volumes.

Any who, most of the book comes from Suzie's narration, which we find the backstory of Suzie, Jon, their powers, and both characters slowly understanding each other and how their love blossoms over the course of the book. They discuss their upbringings, their cruddy-daily jobs, and they're past of sexual practices. It comes off quite funny with them talking about such subject matter. And I assure you, Fractions's same level of witty humor he wrote for his work in Marvel's Hawkeye shines through here (only way more for mature audiences). Imagine Suzie learning every sexual position as a teenager? Or Jon finding out his first pornography store? Moments like these make us affiliate with the characters more than we give credit for.

But the big catch here is how they understand each other too well, very much like normal day things where we meet someone and just like that, we start having feelings around them and so relationships happen. That's the touching thing about this series is the chemistry Fraction writes for Suzie and Jon grows on you. I kid you not, one scene Suzie and Jon are in a bar, while time is stopped and she literately gets up on top of a pool table and sings the band Queen's famous song, "Fat Bottom Girls" out loud. And each of Suzie's word bubbles are blanked out because Fraction and Zdarsky couldn't get the rights to the song in the comic, so Fraction fills each of Suzie's word balloons with commentary on why it is. Which is hilarious because Fraction hoped he'd get the lyrics in the trade upon release from the original comics, and for the trade, he admits he still couldn't do it and apologizes to Brian May. It's a stupendous moment and you know that no comic has done something like that.

As for art, Chip Zdarsky isn't the best artist on the block okay. It's a simple and cartoonish design about it, but it works wonders in here because it perfectly conveys the light tone of the comic, as well as amping up Fractions jokes clearly for readers. Every type of dirty sexual (and casual) imagery Zdarsky can muster is drawn in ways most artist would fail. It his art is not for everyone, but I think it conveys the tone of the series really well.

I don't mention it too much in these collections for the extras, but this does have some cool stuff others lack. After the 5 issues, in the back, we get re-written segment of HARD ON FINK, an original radio drama script used when first promoting the series, a 2-page breakdown of Chip Zdarsky's art script, a 1-page look at the making for Sex Criminals Fourth printing (quite possibly the best cover EVER!), and all alternative covers. All these extras are worth your time to look at.

As for faults, I have very little to none. But if there was any from some readers, it includes the art as I already mentioned. Zdarsky's art isn't the best, but it's intentional. Fraction's dialogue for most of the cast is very natural sense of stuttering. Characters speak with "uh, err, ...yeah, um" a lot to sound natural. And most obviously, this is a very mature rated book. Nudity, sex, cursing, sexual objects, terminology, and some odd imagery in there makes for a dirty book. So prepare yourself for that (it's not for kids, of course!).

But SEX CRIMINALS VOL.1: ONE WEIRD TRICK is another comic people should try out right now. Likeable/relatable characters, engrossing humor, sex police(!), witty art, some great extras, and Suzie singing a blanked-out "Fat Bottom Girls" make for a comic that is something special. If you can get past the art and mature content, this is every bit worth shelling $10 to try this series out for yourself. As Jon plainly put it: "Fat Bottom Girls" was when I knew I loved you." Indeed, Jon...indeed.

Loved it! 30 juillet 2014
Par ChibiNeko - Publié sur Amazon.com

I have to wonder why it's taken me so long to find this comic series. This has to be one of the quirkiest series I've seen in a while, although I'll be honest and say that I'm not sure how well this will age in the long run. Most of its humor and entertainment value come at the expense of today's viewpoints and opinions on sex, so this is the type of work that will probably be considered a classic years down the line but will probably (hopefully) have to be somewhat explained to generations of new readers as "back then opinions on sexuality and your own sexual identity was more confined or repressed, etc".

The artwork is truly wonderful and one of the highlights of the series as a whole. It would have been very, very easy for Fraction and Zdarsky to have skimped on the artwork and relied on the sex and story to carry the series. Others have done it before, so it wouldn't have surprised any of us if we were to have seen artwork that was more aimed towards highlighting the hotness of its lead female Suzie. However that's not the case here and while Suzie is attractive, she's not done up in a way that would be unrealistic or overly unappealing. She's wonderful in that she has is neither an unrealistic beauty nor an overly bland or ugly woman, instead she's the type of person you could expect to meet on the street. The same thing goes for her lover Jon.

What will stand out most in everyone's minds is, of course, the sexual content. Fraction and Zdarsky are unafraid to tackle the idea of someone claiming both their sexuality and their superpowers. Part of what won me over is that they also broached the subject of young children asking questions about sex in general. It reminded me greatly of my own childhood, where educators awkwardly taught us the bare minimum before being told "now don't do this until you're married" and shoved out the classroom door. Most of the stuff my friends and I learned, we learned from checking out books, from overhearing conversations, and from other youths. It's kind of interesting to see this explored in Sex Criminals, especially given the recent controversy over several Planned Parenthood centers being criticized for giving out information to minors. This element is pretty much why I wonder how well this will age in the long run. I can only hope that in 20-50 years we'll have readers scratching their heads and going "why did anyone shame someone for asking an honest question" or "what do you mean, they didn't get a comprehensive education?", making it necessary for people to explain the book's context.

Overall this is definitely a series to check out. Will it age well? Dunno, but for today's day and age it's absolutely fantastic.

Imaginative, Surreal & Funny 4 août 2014
Par carol irvin - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
This is very imaginative. The central idea is that two characters enter a special time warp when they have orgasms. In that time warp they can go anywhere and do anything while there. Eventually they get the idea of planning a bank heist while in the time warp but there they meet the sex police! Not only is this imaginative but it is also funny. The sex is very soft. There is nothing xxx about it at all. The surreal state is what is interesting. There are not many fresh ideas in graphic novels but this is one. The drawing is good but I think the artist needs to make the women characters look more different from one another. The drawn men do not have this problem.

Note: this is the trade paperback edition of volume one of a continuing series of comics, also known as graphic novels. It consists of art and writing on every page. Graphic novels used to be called comic books and some still call them that.

Fraction and Zdarsky are naughty, naughty boys. This is their story. 4 juillet 2014

Sex Criminals is another amazing book from Image that pushes the boundaries and we are all better for it. Yes there is nudity in it. Yes they cuss and talk about sex and, gulp, have sex. It's not a comic for kids. If you think all comics are supposed to be for kids, then you are a moron. Are all novels for kids? Nope. Are all TV shows for kids? Nosiree. Now, before you think this book is the comic version of Skinamax, it is actually a fun and interesting relationship story that just happens to have sex in it because, well, it's what couples do. Also, it leads to them stopping time when they orgasm. Say what now? Yeah, when they each have the big O, time stops and they are able to move through it. Their big plan is to rob a bank while everything is frozen. The title of book is starting to make more sense now isn't it? Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky are some very funny guys and it shows in this book. Heck, the letter columns of each issue are worth buying the book for by themselves. Too bad they didn't include them in the TPB. Do yourself a favor and branch out and see how much fun you can have when you take a chance. This book is good. Real good.
