Aline Templeton has a wondrously deft, unpretentiously beautiful style, full of good things (Hampstead & Highgate Express on THE TRUMPET SHALL)

An enjoyably macabre tale . . . Finely-written and strongly characterised (Oxford Times on PAST PRAYING FOR)

Templeton has wit, a strong narrative sense and a dab hand with the atmospherics (Literary Review on LAST ACT OF ALL)

Templeton crafts a nifty plot (Gerald Kaufman, Scotsman on LAST ACT OF ALL)

Templeton writes as atmospherically and plots as cleverly as ever (Scotsman) --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition Broché .

Présentation de l'éditeur

Seventeen years after her death, the skeletal remains of an eleven-year-old girl are discovered buried deep in the caves of Derbyshire's Peak District. Close by the body lies a crudely-carved clay artefact of a sinister jackal-headed creature. In the ensuing police investigation, the secrets surrounding a group of now grown-up children and their sinister 'Egyptian game' are gradually revealed. Secrets which have lain buried for almost twenty years. Secrets which will emerge with unexpected and devastating consequences. --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition Broché .

Well Written Police Procedural to Pass a Summer Sunday 13 août 2012
Par Sires - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Because I have noticed a lot of 5 star reviews that don't mean anything in terms of the product, I decided to do my own explanation where it comes to books.

5 stars: Keeper, wonderful reading experience.

4 stars: Something is so good about this book that I may well want to reread it. Maybe some minor annoyances.

3 stars: Average, maybe a good story but bad grammar/punctuation/word use-- definitely see review for explanation, maybe overall meh story but no other problems.

2 stars: Not recommended. Something was painful about this read-- again see review.

1 star: Really NOT RECOMMENDED. DNF or wish I hadn't finished it. Something is really wrong and in terms of things in the house to read, please rank this behind the back of shampoo bottles and cereal packages.

Ok, now I feel better.

This is solid 4 star book. Even though I now know the ending, I may well read it again. This is the second book I have read by Aline Templeton and far better than the first.

I wasn't particularly enthralled with the opening from the murder victim's point of view. I think it took away from some of the creepiness when the body was discovered in the cave. I did, however, think Templeton did a good job portraying the stifling marriage of Juliet and Jay Darke.

The interplay between the police officers was interesting and Detective Sergeant Tom Ward had a certain appealing Tom Sawyerish quality about him. He has at least one TSTL moment but I can't say more about that without a spoiler warning-- and the experienced mystery reader will see it coming anyway.

One of the delights of this book is the minor characters, most of whom are portraits in miniature rather than mere spear carriers or hapless red shirts.

Such a great writer 5 septembre 2007

First Sentence: The scary, awful screaming and howling seemed further away now, though it was had to tell because of the echoes.

D.S. Tom Ward doesn't always believe in following the rules and his newest case proves life changing. The skeleton of a young girl is found in a cave 18 years after her death. Also found in the cave are remnants of ritual sacrifice. It has taken Juliette years to realize she has been completely controlled by her husband, Jay, and finds a way to escape to her father. Jay also controlled Juliette and her friends when they were young through their "Egyptian game." Now, even though Jay is gone, he is still manipulating the group and Tom must figure out how it all relates to the young girl's death.

Templeton is one of those under-appreciated authors. Everything about her books works. From the very first line, she set the scene. The characters were interesting and fully developed; I know who they were. The dialogue is perfect, the conversations flow in a natural way. The plot was interesting and complex; I could never quite anticipate where the story was going.
An alright read. 8 mars 2015

This was a hard one to read. I can't come to grips with animal torture and even though it's "only" a story, I hate reading about it. However, the plot had more twists and turns than I could imagine. The author did a good job of leading the reader through the secrets which were kept for twenty years.

I don't want to give a spoiler - suffice to say, I was disappointed in the final unveiling of the murderer, it was unconvincing for me, quite frankly and I didn't want the main detective, Tom, to do what he did at the end. There, that's put the cat among the pigeons, hasn't it? :)

Not a bad read and worth the four stars I am giving it.

I would have given five stars but it was really slow in the beginning. I had a hard time reading it at first but then it got better.
