5.0 étoiles sur 5 Must Read For Jade Calhoun Fans 12 avril 2014

I started this series on a whim and was hooked. I am not the target audience for this genre (as I am older and male) but grew up reading fantasy and found this to be a good read for those of us so inclined. There is a bit of a "Lord of the Rings" flavor as Jade works her way through constantly changing challenges while trying to keep various forces in check.

Ms. Chase has a clean writing style and draws you in quickly providing plenty of twists and turns to keep you reading. I tend to keep my reviews more about the authors craft and steer clear of summaries that could spoil the book for a reader. So if you like paranormal stories that have a bit of a dark edge to them (Denise Grover Swank, Mindy Klasky, Elizabeth Reeves or HP Mallory) you should like this series. There is a little humor and a little pathos but on the whole this is series that chronicles the growth of a white witch and those around her and the shifting conflicts that come with that growth. There is a lot to the story that plays on the setting of New Orleans, that settings lends lot to the tenor of the story as well as the continued unfolding of the stories of the characters that surround Jade. I am not sure of any setting other than Savanah that would support the story as well. Well written and well plotted, though this episode Jade seems a little more tentative than the last.

I strongly suggest reading them in order. The story makes much more sense that way and I found it more enjoyable to follow the story as it built. I can see this series going on for a number more episodes.

I always hate to come to the end of one of Deanna Chase's books. She makes me love her characters and I feel like I'm right there with them. I hope that Jade Calhoun keeps going for many, many years!

I have read these from the beginning, they have all been awesome, this one was no exception. So much happens in this book you can't seem to let it go, you read until it's all over. I love the characters, the way they care for each other and are always there. Can't wait till the next one comes out in the winter, we will be reading it as soon as it is available . Love Deanna Chase Keep Them Coming!!!

Prior to reading this installment in the series, I read a review by someone extremely frustrated by the story and what the reviewer basically labeled Jade's utter failure at everything. Admittedly, I went into this book on the look out for the things mentioned in the review.

I'm happy to report that I was not nearly as frustrated by the story as said reviewer seemed to be.

That being said, I was still frustrated more than I would have liked to have been. I'm not sure the frustration is in Jade's failure of all things, but certainly her failure to at least ASK PERTINENT QUESTIONS. Or really any questions at all. She was repeatedly careening into unknown, dangerous situations armed with nothing, often not even with confidence in what she can do. It's something that's happened in all of the books, like absolutely no one taking a moment to research Camille in the previous book. But it seems to be more prevalent in this story. This habit isn't limited to Jade: Lucien is cursed when he's in college and it never occurs to him that the person standing right there might've been the one who did it? In fact, Evil Mitch even says something along the line that witches never research anything, and although I appreciated the nod of acknowledgment from the author, I would appreciate more having Jade, you know, look things up once in a while. I was also troubled by Kane's new commitment. I don't understand how that works with the fairly binding and eternal commitment he made in the 4th book. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of bad-ass demon hunters, but what happens if he gets a Shadowalker assignment that conflicts with the demon hunting? That doesn't seem very well thought out to me. Another source of frustration was the lack of information about whatever Mati was doing and the Veil being closed, and what that place was where Mati spent most of the story. Something in passing is mentioned about angels not being able to fall, but what else does it do? Why are there demons still walking around? What was the point if evil can still pass through it? Leaving the story without any sort of hint at an explanation was fairly unsatisfying.

Overall, my enjoyment outweighed the frustrations in this story. All of the books were well written, with only minor and infrequent editing issues (such as passed/past mix up and Lucien/Lucian spelling variations in his introductory book). I do hope the author offers more stories in this series, as I've grown really fond of the characters and truly enjoy the humorous approach combined with the paranormal and real-world setting. I would, however, appreciate it if Jade would put a little more effort into learning things before running headlong into the unknown.
