Présentation de l'éditeur

Chris “Shooter” Sullivan has returned to his home town of Rapid City, South Dakota to pick up the pieces of his life shattered by a roadside bomb in Iraq. He only wants to focus on holding what’s left of his old unit together, running his garage where he builds custom bikes and cars, and pretending that his murdered father’s motorcycle gang doesn’t exist.

Hayley Turner is a young woman with her own traumatic past. Fresh off the bus from Nowhere, USA, all she wants is a job and a place to live, until it’s time for her to leave again. She doesn’t want to make friends, or enemies, least of all the ex-Army Ranger who obviously doesn’t like her. She bristles under his watchful eye. He’s even got her convinced she’s bad news.

But circumstances force two people who don’t need anyone to need each other more and more. The more Chris gets to know Hayley, the harder it is to stay detached. And the more Hayley gets to know Chris, the more she realizes she’s been alone for so long she might never recover from it.

Having read loads of contemporary romances over the years, this one was not written to the usual boy meets girl, girl falls in love formula. Because of that, and the way the author unfolds the story with sensitivity and understanding of human frailty, I really enjoyed it. For an Alpha-male, Shooter has a soft side. Plus he's not a billionaire or the Laird of the Manor. He's a normal guy struggling to understand girl stuff. And he's fallable too, but that's what makes him real. His friends are an interesting bunch who I'd love to read more about, especially Tex.
Loved it.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great Alpha Read 18 novembre 2013

I really enjoyed this book. Let me start off by clarifying from the cover that this is not a biker book. Yes, they know a biker MC, but it really has nothing to do with the overall story at all.
Basically a Lieutenant from the Army moves to Rapid City and the guys from his group follow him. They've built a brotherhood between them that only war and death can create.
The Lieutenant, Chris "Shooter" Sullivan is very Alpha. The whole town loves him. Between the guys, they basically know everything about the town's goings-on and watch out for it.
Cue Hayley - just off the bus, running from a horrible past and doesn't plan on staying longer than it takes to build up some cash and get gone.
Because, if she stays too long, her past just might catch up to her.(*Side Note: There's not a lot of detail of this past, even when the book explains it, you're kind of left wondering why this guy from left field took on this obsession and what it had to do with her).
She gets a job at the local bar as a waitress. She uses the ruse that she's basically an on the run beaten woman from her man. She doesn't tell them that, she just gives herself bruises and uses the deer in headlights look when they ask her about it.
They don't know her past and the person she's running from is worse than that.
Right off the bat, Shooter is suspicious of Hayley. He knows she's lying and can tell she's conning the people around her...just not sure of what she's conning and the extent of it.
However, his Alpha possessiveness...combined with the strange attraction he has to her, has him demanding he move into his rent house (next door to his) for her safety. Hayley puts up a good fight, but agrees.
So the relationship begins to build. If I had to guess from memory, I would say that it's almost 50% where they actually start off the relationship from friends to lovers. The scenes are scorching hot!
It is a little cheesy with how much all the guys are just in love with Hayley and the extent of their protection/possessiveness they offer her...even from Shooter.
They all know she was most likely raped, but figure it was from a boyfriend who's still after her.
No one mentions it to Hayley, they just treat her like gold to help her feel secure.
So the story goes from there and it just keep's getting better.
HOWEVER - I'm a little miffed that when the ball got rolling and the bad guy finally caught up to Hayley, it wasn't even Shooter that got to save her. He was pretty much helpless. I mean, why have this whole book going on and on about how possessive he is, how much he loves her and that he's basically this bada** trained killer and then, his hands are tied when Hayley actually needs rescuing. HELLO! That's what we were waiting for!! For him to finally get to save what's "his".
So anywho, it was a good book. I loved all the guys in it and couldn't wait to get my hand's on their stories. I was happy when I found out Tex's book is already out. However, I didn't like it near as much as I liked Shooter.
So, I do recommend this read. It's a great possessive Alpha read.

(some spoilers) I am giving this two starts because I did enjoy the beginning of the book, but then about half way through, I started getting irritated with the characters. The heroine felt too perfect for me, too nice, too sweet. It just got on my nerves. It also was a bit annoying how all of the hero's friends were in love with her. She seemed so strong in the beginning and then seemed to turn into a emotional weakling, always storming off and slamming doors. I also don't understand why she was on the run for 5 years. She had no contact with her stalker/rapist except one letter in the beginning, yet she continued to be in hiding, relocating every six months or so. It wasn't like he was making appearances or threatening her, causing her to up and move to a new location. Then at the end of the book, it wasn't even the hero who rescued her. Some things about this book just felt choppy, and near the end of the book I found myself skipping sections just to get the book finished. I wasn't a fan.

I absolutely loved the book. It was amazing to read about Shooter and his friends and to see the compassion and understanding they had toward Haley. It was great to watch Shooter and Haley develop into a couple. Do have to admit that he could be very bossy. There were times I laughed out loud at the sass between everyone, which made them come to life and you really felt like you knew them. Would love to have friends like that.

You knew that something bad had happened to Haley, but did not know what until 3/4 through the book. You realized how strong of a woman she was. Shooter is definitely one of my favorite hero's.

If you are offended by the "f" word - warning that is used frequently. Sex scenes are HOT.

Can't wait for her next book

There were parts of the novel that I enjoyed, and parts that didn't appeal to me. I also thought it was a little too long. A good balance of intrigue, romance, and humour thanks to some of the witty dialogue. I liked the two protagonists, Chris and Hayley, and all their friends, Tex, Caleb, Doc, Easy, and Hawk. I really appreciated the author refraining from the mainstream whereby the couple meet, have sex right away, and then move in together. Instead, Chris and Hayley's relationship grows over time, first from landlord-tenant, to friendship, and lastly to lovers. The patience that Chris showed Hayley when it came to them being romantically involved was impressive to say the least. I should mention that Chris and his friends are definitely alpha-males; and at times so over-the-top alpha which I'm not a huge fan of. I actually found the men went back and forth between being an alpha-male and a regular, decent guy. The one thing I found a little odd were the deep conversations the men would have as a group talking about relationships, and their sexual preferences. Every time Chris screwed up, they'd have this deep conversation about his actions, what he should've done or not done. All of this made it difficult at times to remember that this is a group of men who are mechanics, have done tours in the Middle East, and ride motorcycles. As for Hayley, while I did like her character, I thought the author went a little overboard making her a little too sweet, too goody-goody, someone who is so smart, witty, sassy and can do no wrong. A little too much for me. In the end, it's still a pretty good read.

I really did love the first half of this book.

Pros- I loved their banter, the flirting, the friendship and Sarah's relationship with all the guys. I really loved the fact that she saved herself in the end. It made me like her that much more and I'm glad that she was the one to kill the man who put her thru so much.

Cons- I really hate the OW thing. I really love alpha men but the fact that he was having semi-regular relations with someone else after he met Sarah really was a major turn-off for me. True they were only friends but he lied to her about it, and lying by omission is still a lie. But then he told her he called the OW by her name, which to me only makes it worse. That is not hot, at all. The whole thing started going downhill for me when the OW confronted Sarah and told her a bunch of half-truths. She did it in such a brutal, cold-hearted way that it was hard to read the rest of it. If that wasn't bad enough, she still comes back around after Chris and Sarah have a major fight and while he says he was just calling her bluff, he took it way too far. Tex was right and if Sarah had walked in on it, that would have broken her heart. Then the OW runs to tell Sarah and Chris decides not to man up until Sarah pushes him to. That whole scene just left me feeling sick. Seriously, he's an adult and if he cared about Sarah at all that would never have gone down at all. It did keep me turning the pages to find out what happens next. I really wish I could give it more stars but those issues really killed it for me.

The writing to me was great, few spelling errors. It did keep me turning the pages to find out what happens next. Will I read the next one? Probably but it's not really a priority.
