Packed with images and ideas on personal style 1 juin 2011
Par Shona C. Cole - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
`But when truly confident people, who are secure in their image and identity, walk into the room, it's entrancing.' This quote from Megan Hunt, p89, pretty much sums up the 22 woman you meet in this book.

While all profiled are crafty in some way or another, there is a good diversity of body shapes, backgrounds and styles represented. Broken up into 20 sections you get to understand a little about the development and elements of each of the women's personal style.

The photography in this book is excellent. There are many artfully taken full length photos of the women (in a few different outfits) as well as views of their stylish, crafty homes and interesting details and nicknacks. The editor Jenny Doh has packed in the information and images. It is short on white space, long on information and inspiration.

I have never put too much time into thinking about my day to day clothing style. Sure I dress up if there is an event to go to or someone new to meet, but that is not so much `personal style' as following a set fashion. So how much better to make an effort to wear something interesting, something that expresses `me' even if I am just going grocery shopping or being at home with my kids? Through these woman Doh has delivered lots of doable ideas for me to add unique touches, unusual color pairings and interesting fabrics to my wardrobe regardless of what I am doing. (e.g. outfits that mix decades, Megan Nicolay p104; limiting signature pieces, Bari J. Ackerman, p68; using upholstery fabric in clothing, Sandy Stone, p114 and tons more).

To top it off there is `how to' section after each profile showing you how to make a piece that expresses the individual style. The projects are on the whole expressive, cute and seem like they could be done in an afternoon, even if you are not too experienced. All of the crafts - e.g. ruffled headband, tote, wrist purse, upcycled sweater, altered t-shirt, knitted belt, scarf, bracelet, necklace and more - are sewing projects.

Fun Projects That Everyone Will Enjoy! 23 juin 2011
Par MusingCrow - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Jenny Doh and Lark books have another hit on their hands. "Signature Styles" will appeal to crafters and stitchers alike. Each spotlighted artist has a distinct style and all are bound to bring a smile to your face. I found a person who revels in one of my favorite colors (aside from gold-green I mean) orange! The projects in this book are sure to please; there's whimsical felt owls from Elsie Flannigan, a lettuce edged re-purposed sweater from Betz White (who seems to like orange), fresh, colorful country feel goodies from Serena Thompson, vintage-y lacey, feminine, wonderful fripperies from Bonzie & Ger and Sandy Stone's colorful re-purposing (the carafes full of fun buttons) is just a smattering of the fun you'll find in this new book from Jenny Doh and Lark.

As with all books that Lark publishes the directions for the projects are well written, superbly illustrated and easy to follow. Each project includes a list of what you'll need to complete the project and, where needed, templates are included in the back of the book. Each featured artist has a page of their own with a photograph of them in their art making space, a list of what the essence of their style is, notes about what things they "can't live without" and hints about where they find the fun things that they include in their art.

Jenny Doh is a powerhouse of creativity. In my opinion she created the publishing phenomenon that is Stampington and, since leaving their she has spread her wings and continued on to achieve even more success with her fabulous website, Crescendoh.com. You can't help but admire her passion for art of all kinds. She's encouraging and whimsical and just an all around amazing woman. Grab yourself a copy of this book (I've never been able to understand how Lark puts out such quality for such reasonable prices!), sit back and prepare to enjoy!

Fascinating profiles! 3 juillet 2011
Par Especially Happy - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Author Jenny Doh has developed her own personal style, but is continually intrigued by others who are working at their own look. Jenny has selected an inspiring group of creative women to showcase in her book, Signature Styles.

These ladies have found their own personal "signature style" and are each featured separately with information about their evolution as an innovative creative force. Signature Styles gives a fascinating look into their point of view, inspirations, routines, how they manage work and family, and much more. The book has a gorgeous graphic layout, filled with bright colors and detailed and interesting photos on every single page. There are all kinds of fun factoids spotlighted throughout, like seamstress Meg Allan Cole's photo of her Oma's vintage dresses or the Simmons' personal prized wearables.

In addition to profiling each of the twenty artistic women (including giving their website and blog addresses), they have each also included a step-by-step tutorial of a craft of their choosing (complete patterns included). It is really a delight to read about them and their talents and then actually see a specific design created by them especially for the readers. A few of the beautiful creations are a darling "crafty" applique t-shirt, a pretty patchwork tote, and a cashmere sweater recycled into a lettuce-edge shrug. Signature Styles is filled with eye candy for crafters and artists, as well as exciting information about the women that made it happen!

Very colourful book. Was a bit disappointed with the content but after reading it from cover to cover and then checking out all the websites mentioned, I gained more from it. Projects inside were okey and gave food for thought. If I had seen a copy in the shops proberbly would not have brought it, however is a good reference book for the websites.
