Présentation de l'éditeur

Former private investigator Cèsar Hawke has one rule: He doesn’t deal with dead bodies. That’s why he enlisted with the Magical Violations Department in the Office of Preternatural Affairs. He’s happy tracking down witches that commit petty crimes, but he leaves the homicides to other agents.

Except that he’s been assigned to a new team—a team that handles special investigations—and the job has suddenly changed. Now Cèsar has to deal with dead bodies. He also has to deal with necromancers, murderous cults, and demons that can stop a man’s heart with fear.

This isn’t the job he signed up for, but it’s the job he needs to do.

If he survives the first week.

Hi everyone! My name is Sara, and I write urban fantasy novels as SM Reine. I collect swords, cat hair, and typewriters (which I do use for writing!). It's a good day when those three things have nothing to do with each other.

If you would like to know the instant I have a new book available, you should enlist in my Army of Evil! We have a WICKED cool secret handshake, but you'll have to sign up to learn it. ;) Check it out --

I love SM Reine so I naturally tried this out. The sequel to Witch Hunt, this book doesn't disappoint. Cesar is a witch who works for a paranormal agency fighting the bad guys. His partner is a tough witch named Suzy who suffered a bit of trauma in book one that carries over to this one. We learn more his boss, Fritz and the new squad they are a part of. I really like Izzy the potential love interest who is also desired by Fritz. Triangle anyone? There are some familiar faces in this one if you have read the Descent Series but if you haven't it doesn't detract from this series. This series seem to be a bit lighter than Ms Reine's others which is refreshing. Cesar seems to be laughing at himself at times. The story has demons, witches and werewolves, oh my. Read and enjoy.

Poor Cèsar. His old life was so Normal. Well, if you can call being a Witch employed by the Magical Violations Department of the Office of Preternatural Affairs ‘normal’. His day-to-day life consisted of getting warrants, performing arrests, putting the suspects on trial, and sendng guilty parties back to the Hell from whence they came – of course, with the travel forms filled out in triplicate. Hey, it was a job, right? And then, everything went to Hell. After finding a body in his bathtub in Witch Hunt, the first in the Preternatural Affairs series, Cèsar Hawke was suddenly on the run, desperate to find the real killer and clear his name. It wasn’t easy, and it definitely wasn’t fun . . . especially the whole “the Incubi now have a price on your head” part of the deal. Meh. After dealing with double dealing double agents (with really nasty tempers), vicious demons and various and sundry other nasties, a few Incubi shouldn’t be that big of a deal . . . should it?

Uh, well, maybe?

Now he is part of a special task force, made up of his old partner from Magical Violations, Agent Suzy Takeuchi, whose magical curses are only slightly less impressive than her verbal curses; Isobel Stonecrow, a necrocognitive who raises ghosts and speaks with the dead; and Fritz Friederling, the brains and money behind the task force. A very secretive and possibly illegal task force now based in Reno Nevada, away from the LA basin and the Incubi who are intent on taking Cèsar down for spoiling a very lucrative bit of fun for them. Ah well, can’t please everyone all the time.

Following up on an infernal energy event in Reno, Cèsar meets with a confidential informant, Connie, in an abandoned building, only to have Connie commit suicide right in front of him. Who could know that a demon would be so afraid of a simple daddy longlegs? I suppose when you are a Daimarachnid, a truly horrifying spider demon under your skin suit, and you have a lot to hide, it isn’t all that surprising that that simple daddy longlegs could have been a spy for the mother of all spider demons. Well, if there really is a mother of all spider demons out there somewhere!

Oy. Can things get any worse? Oh, yeah, baby. Much. Much. Worse. Walking nightmares are bad enough, but throw in a demon overlord and various and sundry goblins and goulies and monstrosities (Oh, My!) an abandoned mine filled with spiders the size of eight-legged ponies, zombies werewolves and ethereal ruins, and you have a recipe for many a sleepless night. Oh. And let’s not forget the new price on Cèsar’s head, courtesy of his bosses boss. Can just one thing go right for Cèsar? Just one?? He will take a tiny, small little thing. Really.

Cèsar’s life just gets more and more interesting, in a very Chinese May you live in interesting times sort of way. Many of the cast from Witch Hunt make repeat appearances in this new edition, along with several new characters whom I expect to see more of in the future. And there is at least one shock that I never even saw coming, something that may change Cèsar’s life even more. I look forward to Hotter Than Helltown, the next in the series. Hope you enjoy this series as much as I am enjoying it!

I received Silver Bullet from the author in exchange for a realistic review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

S. M. Reine is good enough to give a time frame at the beginning of the book so you get some idea where this story sits in amongst the others. This helps because of appearances from old 'friends' like Cain. This series is definitely lighter than the Descent series but whilst that makes it entertaining, I'm not too convinced with Cèsar. There are times when he seems hapless and helpless but somehow manages to wangle his way through one disaster after another and come out looking like one of Isobel's sparklebombs.

The story is fast-paced and witty with lots of character interaction. Preternatural Affairs looks set to become a first class series. Personally though, I prefer the Seasons of the Moon and Cain Chronicles.

I have my crazy eyes out. My good crazy eyes. The ones that are afraid for Cèsar and Suzy and their newly formed crew. Because, let's face it, the corruption they're starting to see in OPA and the Union runs deep and things are going to get very interesting.

And the shenanigans Cèsar finds himself in at the end of the book? I AM AFEARED.

Having read all the other books set in the universe (not a requirement, mind you, but it will add an extra layer to everything Cèsar encounters), I LOVED seeing some of the places and people we meet later on. Unexpected allies, people who we love to hate, and dark magic made this a virtual cornucopia of delights. Added bonus, we get to see Reno before Elise is unleashed upon it. Which means it's, you know, still standing.

But let's get back to Cèsar and his crew. Suzy's a mess after being held in a Union detention center in book 1, Isobel seems upfront about what she is and can do but I'm WARY, and Fritz has secrets. Quite a few secrets, from the looks of things. And Cèsar... Cèsar doesn't seem like he's cut out for a life of eviscerating demons and having to kill when the situation calls for it, yet he's smack dab in the middle of just that.

They team is messy and haven't quite found their groove together but they do manage to get things done. And what they're uncovering... well, we'll see plenty more of it, I imagine.

A very fun, every so slightly bloody (I'm lying, there's a fair amount of blood -- some demon, some not) follow up to book 1. As a prequel to the Elise/James/Rylie universe, it made me giddy. I just love how dark and gritty this world is as a whole. Seeing it before it reaches maximum devastation is brilliant and makes me happy.

Some kind of supernatural power surge in Reno, Nevada has Cesar and Suzy in Reno.

Cesar is interrogating an informant. She's a demon and scared to death. So scared that she cuts her own throat. Cesar wonder what the hell could scare a demon that much??

She did tell him about the manager of a club in Reno, Cravens Casino. David Nicholas by name.

The club is owned by Demons and Nicholas is one scary man. Everyone is scared to death of the him and this is a guy Cesar just knows he and Suzy, his partner, are going to have to see. Hawke isn't looking forward to it at all.

Cesar Hawke is a witch. He's a three on the witch power scale. Not powerful at all. He's also a big guy who's very strong and stays that way drinking magic power drinks which he makes. He's also very good looking.

Hawke works for the FBI. Well kinda sorta. He actually works for the Preternatural Affairs Dept of the FBI. A group no one knows anything about. A group who go after the preternaturals out there who are up to no good. Folks don't know about them either.

His partner Suzy is a powerful witch and she's hell on wheels during an assignment and Hawke is glad to have her as his partner.

Hawke and Suzy head for the Cravins Casino to speak with Nicholas.

So begins one good read.

This one has Hawke, Suzi, their boss Fritz, a demon named Nicholas, a werewolf named Cain, death, kidnapping, the mind numbing power of Nicholas and Hawke and Suzy doing all they can to solve the mystery and stay alive.

Five Stars.
