Présentation de l'éditeur

As powerful magic comes creeping back, dangerous days are dawning…

Criminal Investigation Division inspectors Janus Mikani and Celeste Ritsuko were lucky to make it out of their last mission alive. Since then, strange troubles have plagued the city of steam and shadows, apparently as a result of magic released during the CID inspectors’ desperate interruption of an ancient ritual. The fabric of the world has been unsettled, and the Council has assigned Mikani and Ritsuko to investigate.

They soon discover that matters are worse than they imagined. Machines have developed minds of their own, cragger pirates are raiding the seas with relentless aggression, and mad elementals are running amok. As the chaos builds to a crescendo, Mikani and Ritsuko must fight a war on two fronts—and this time, they may not be able to turn the deadly tide…

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Bit of a let down 13 juin 2014

As much as I liked the first book, this second instalment never really made me feel much. It's telling that it took me five days to finish the book because when I'm well and truly hooked I can't put a book down. Sadly, that was not the case this time. It seemed like the book took a long time to get to the point and by the time it did I found I wasn't particularly interested anymore. The story is still told in third person, which meant that we got quite a bit of some secondary characters that I could've done without, frankly. I'm not giving up on the series yet (assuming there are more books to come) but I'm hoping it can recapture the something-something this book seemed to lack for me. I'm also hoping the authors cut back on the constant mental asides from the characters. I found that most annoying after awhile.

I am honestly surprised that there are only two reviews for Silver Mirrors. I am not surprised they are both five stars :-). Bronze Gods was one of my favorite books last year, Silver Mirrors is even better.
In this follow-up, you get more information about everything. You find out more about the background of both main characters as well as the world itself and the magic and elementals running through it. There is non-stop action and a romance that builds slowly throughout the book. The pace of the book is just right without a lot of contrived plot devices. Just an overall excellent book. I highly recommend the series, hopefully there is a third book waiting just around the corner :-).

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Love This Series! 30 avril 2014

Wow! You are in for a heck of an adventure with Ritsuko and Mikani when you read Silver Mirrors! After I proclaimed Bronze Gods as the best book of 2013, I was almost afraid to read the follow up in the Apparatus Infernum series. Could it possibly be as good? The answer is a resounding YES!

While Bronze Gods was more of a murder mystery, Silver Mirrors is a series of all-out, no holds barred, bare-fisted confrontations with the dark magical forces that inhabit Hy Breasil's Winter Island. There is no time to catch your breath between chapters. The only thing softening the action is the slow burning romance between our heroes. You will learn a little more of Mikani's past, and then cross your fingers for both Ritusko's and Mikani's future. All I can say is AWESOME!

I truly love this series. The setting and concepts are highly original and thought-provoking. I hope they prove to be fodder for a long, successful series of books!

True story - Shortly before I starting reading Silver Mirrors, I watched a TV show on Atlantis-like lost lands. They talked about the island of Hy Breasil. I had never heard of it before, but I suppose that is because the Architect did such a good job of hiding it from the rest of the world.....

I got an advance copy from the author in exchange for an unbiased review.

Mikani and Ritsuko have just come off a case where they foiled a villain who was trying to destroy their city. Despite the accolades they receive, they are certain that he wasn't acting alone and are pursuing their investigation without official sanction.

Things are going a little crazy in the city too with the elementals that power the trains and the long distance mirror going crazy. They believe that it is an after effect of the spell the villain was trying to perform. Their superiors want them to find out the cause and stop the problem. Thus, they are sent out of the city in search of a solution.

Mikani calls on an older lover Saskia for help. She, in turn, wants him to return a favor owed and help her kill the leader of the craggers who are hampering shipping between the cities. Little do they know that the two problems are connected.

Between fighting off attacks of the craggers and dealing with angry elementals, Mikani and Ritsuko have their hands full. It doesn't help that Ritsuko has developed an ability to discern truth from lies when she hears people speak. This new power along with Mikani's ability to feel what people around him feel further complicates their new relationship.

The world building in this series is amazing. The magic is well integrated in the story as is the history of the world. I also really like the interactions between the characters. Mikani and Ritsuko's changing feelings for each other and their hesitancy to do anything about them provided an interesting dynamic played out around the larger issues.

I really hope that this wasn't the last adventure for Mikani and Ritsuko since the ending left them currently safe but with large problems still to be solved.

I liked this one a lot better than Bronze Gods although I wish that the explanation of the history of the Ferishers (Fey) and what exactly happened to them. I mean if their descendants only have like a sliver of Ferisher blood long lived/immortal then shouldn't the pure blood ones be immortal as well? I may have read over it too quickly or wasn't paying close attention in case it was explained but I mean the Ferishers just up and vanished leaving behind their kin. The summary on Goodreads says that their bodies withered and died turning their souls into angry hungry spirits that haunt the countryside but how did they wither and die? Why? And just who is the Architect?
Anyway back to Silver Mirrors. The action didn't start out in the middle like Bronze Gods did but almost started out right off which was a plus for me. When I have to read almost halfway through the book just to get some action scenes-not the sexual kind-I give up on it. But in Silver Mirrors the action was quick to start and continued throughout the book another bonus. I enjoyed the growing feelings between Ritsuko and Mikani and only wish that they had acted on those feelings. I wasn't too thrilled about Mikani's ex weather witch showing up but hey, every good story gotta have a complicated love triangle right? I enjoyed how the author(s) got creative with the four elementals, what they were and all that. I disliked how Ritsuko was drawn toward another man even with her feelings for her partner on the rise. The moments when Mikani is fiercely and violently protective of his partner had me going "aww, that's sweet even if he did almost kill the guy(s)". And when he's so desperate and frantic, the emotion and pain he felt and experienced had me wishing that their blossoming romance would quickly happen. There were a few parts where I was unsure of what exactly what was going on, mostly because of the words used and the phrases. I wish the authors would use easier words to describe something, I get that it's steam punk but when I'm always having to look up the meaning of a word I already know because my definition doesn't seem to match with what the word being used in the sentence it loses points. I enjoy how Ritsuko is so proper and a respectful young lady and yet she can still kick ass in her fancy clothes and just filthy. I enjoy how Mikani seems to be softening and it's because of Ritsuko I'm just afraid that she's going to soften him up and some other woman will come by and snatch him up before the two of them can get something going.
The action in this book is great as well as the increasing attraction and feelings between Ritsuko and Mikani is wonderful as well as how the authors can show you a world that you've only dreamed about. I enjoyed how the story flowed mostly, there were a few places where it was choppy and didn't flow as smoothly and how each chapter seemed like a new adventure keeping the reader keep on reading all night long. I could barely put my Kindle down or my phone-kindle app-and having to work just about killed me because I could barely wait to get back to reading.
