First, I don't think this author is a native English speaker. The grammar and sentence structure is horrific. This fact alone makes this book cumbersome at best. A brief example-

"*scales with a scale if not less than 1 g, if you want to cook at least 0.3 kg of soap; to make soap with less than 300 g, use more accurate scale (0.1 g);"

There are dozens upon dozens of such phrasing in this book. Including a particular gem where the author equates soapmaking to witchcraft. Well, okay then.

Because I'm an experienced soapmaker, I can roughly follow along the steps and procedures outlined. They aren't wildly wrong, necessarily, but not at all understandable to anyone not already familiar with the process. She does claim things as soaping gospel, so to speak, that are merely preferred procedures. For example, that all lye solution must be created using frozen water. That's just not accurate. Frozen milk is preferred for milk soapmaking to keep the milk solution from scalding. However, room temperature distilled water is perfectly fine for the standard process.

The list of recommended supplies looks remarkably similar to what it outlined in Anne Watson's Smart Soapmaking (the best book for beginners, imo). It's not straight plagiarism-more like she lifted and rewrote the process. I get that there are only so many ways under the sun to do something, but this particular section seems a bit disconnected to the rest of the book. In fact, later in the book, the author demonstrates the steps and uses a kitchen sink for the cooling waterbath. No issue there, as it works great, but the specific tools and method earlier used in Smart Soapmaking are not even used in the demo section.

The author does recommend Soapcalc and gives some basic instructions. Good. Every soapmaker should learn it. Not only does she mention it, she uses it as well; the recipes I checked gave correct proportions. Still, double check yourself! Manual calculations are also covered, which I suppose could be useful in some situations; I find it unnecessary, personally. If I was going to attempt it, I would go with instructions that didn't have a language barrier factor. A SAP value table is included for those that already know or have another source for the formulas.

Glass measuring and mixing tools are recommended in several places; stainless steel and heat resistant plastic are safer. Any glass used should be heavy duty, like Pyrex.

I am convinced that the author knows how to MAKE soap, probably quite well. Unfortunately, that doesn't translate to authoring. The self publishing format definitely opens new doors. However, very few people that cross through have any idea what to do on the other side, so to speak. Not everyone is a writer. This is the case here. The 5-star reviewers are friends, or family, or something.

I do like the fact that there are photos and that the checked recipes were good. That earned an extra star right there.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Worst book on making soap... 3 juillet 2014

This is the worst book on making soap that I have ever come across. I just hope someone new to soap making doesn't try to follow the terminology and explanations of the soap making processes in this book. The writing and wording is very hard to follow and I am an experienced soap maker. Now I know why this book was free. Amazon should not offer this book to anyone.

I had a very difficult time reading this book. There were so many grammatical errors that it became very distracting. I felt as though it was written by someone who speaks English as a second language. Many of the soap recipes also seemed "off". For example, the author describes castile soap. This soap is 100% Olive oil, however her recipe is a mix of several oils. She had a recipe for carrot soap, discussing the benefits of carrot, but then says to add turmeric or carrot (and not even giving accounts to use). Some of the instructions are ambiguous and contradictory. There is some good advice, but there are better resources available, especially for the beginner.
