Par George O'Leary - Publié sur
Format: CD
As with so many other black artists, Joe Quarterman began singing in church groups, local chorale clubs, and wherever else he could assemble an audience, including street corners. While in high school, and leading a group known as The Knights, he was given the nickname "Sir." In the early 1960s he hooked up with four female singers called The Maidens and, as Sir Joe & The Maidens, cut Jivin Jean b/w Pen Pal on Lenox 5563, a small New York City-based label (neither side charted). Also an accomplished trumpet player, he also worked briefly with a group known as the Magnificent Seven, which at times backed Garnet Mimms, as well as with The Orlando Smith Quintet, a pure jazz group, before forming the funk group Free Soul in 1970 (their billing henceforth would be Joe Quarterman & Free Soul.

Consisting of lead guitarist George "Jackie" Lee, drummer Charles Steptoe, bassist Gregory Hammonds, keyboardist Karissa Freeman, guitarist Willie Parker, and trumpeter Leon Rogers, they secured a contract with Lloyd Price's short-lived GSF label, with their first release, (I Got) So Much Trouble In My Mind Part 1 reaching # 30 R&B in December 1972 b/w Part 2 on GSF 6879. However, the follow-up Find Yourself/The Way They Do My Life on GSF 6893 in early 1973 bombed, and in September, This Girl Of Mine (She's Good To Me) staggered to a # 96 R&B b/w I Feel Like This on GSF 6903. And in January 1974, Thanks Dad Part 1 only did marginally better by finishing at # 82 R&B b/e Part 2 on GSF 6911. Their last release at the label, I'm Gonna Get You/No also flopped a bit later on GSF 6915. It was the second-last record released by GSF.

Their next stop was with the giant Mercury Records where their first single, Get Down Baby Part 1 topped out at # 59 R&B in January 1975 b/w Part 1 on Mercury 73637, but when the follow-up I'm A Young Man b/w a longer disco dance rendition of the same song on Mercury 73708 failed, and they were dropped, the group disbanded due mainly to financial problems, brought about by indifferent reaction to their records and their failure to land one song on the more lucrative Billboard Pop Hot 100. At this juncture, Quarterman decided to seek career advancement elsewhere, goping on to earn a degree in architecture.

Normally, someone with such limited commercial success would have essentially disappeared from public awareness in short order, but somehow his music has taken on a funk cult status that far exceeds his accomplishments. And while there's nothing "classic" about his efforts, it was for the most part pretty decent dance music for the time, and here and there some of his sides deal head on and in a no-holds-barred fashion with the social ills of the day. The sound quality is excellent and this comes with interesting liner notes written by Laurence Prangell.

For hits collectors, all sides of his four charters are here in this 2007 release by Soul Brother as are the entire contents of his only LP, "Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul" Z(GSF S-1009) which contained: 1. (I Got) So Much Trouble In My Mind (6:19); 2. I Made A Promise (4:18); 3. The Trouble With Trouble (2:46); 4. The Way They Do My Life (3:06); 5. Find Yourself (2:59); 6. Gonna Get Me A Friend (2:04); 7. Give Me Back My Freedom (3:34); 8. I Feel Like This (2:57); 9. Live Now Brothers (3:02).

All in all, a much better bet than the 1995 Collectables release and it gets all 5 stars from me for being complete.
