Danica Snow has always been the smart, practical, and appropriate sister. As a therapist, she prides herself on making reasonable, conservative choices, even if a bit boring, and as part of the Big Sister Program, she has little time for anything more in her life.

Blake Carter is a player. He never gets bored of conquering women, and with his sexy good looks and successful lifestyle, he has no trouble finding willing participants. When his friend and business partner dies in a tragic accident, he suddenly, desperately, wants to change his ways. The problem is, he doesn't know how to stop doing what he does best.

When Blake walks into Danica's office, the attraction between them is white hot, but Danica isn't the type to give into the heat and risk her career. Danica's desire sets her on a path of self-discovery, where she begins to question every decision she's ever made. Just this once, Danica wants to indulge in the pleasures of life she's been so willingly ignoring, but with her Little Sister in turmoil and her biological sister's promiscuousness weighing heavily on her heart, she isn't sure it's the right time to set her desires free.

Melissa Foster's Sisters in Love is a journey of self discovery for the three main characters, Danica Snow, her sister Kaylie and Blake Carter. While there is a romantic element to the novel, it is more of a secondary story arc.

In the beginning of Sisters in Love, I was not sure if I was going to like any of the primary characters. Danica comes across as judgmental and her assessments of her sister and Blake are honest but a little harsh. Kaylie comes across as immature and rather flaky. My first impressions of Blake were mixed and I liked him the most.

Luckily, about a quarter of the way into the novel, I began to reassess my opinions. As more of the characters' back stories were revealed, I had a better understanding of their thought processes, actions and reactions to certain situations.

Blake's story gave me a different viewpoint of his attitude towards women and his inability to commit to a relationship. Of the three, Blake is the most introspective and self-aware. His efforts to change are very sincere and while he sometimes briefly falls back into old habits, his transformation begins immediately. Blake is a stand up guy who wants to do the right thing and despite his discomfort and inexperience, he provides a tremendous amount of emotional support for his deceased friend's family.

I was really on the fence about Danica for most of the novel. I sympathized with her feelings of being cast as the "smart, responsible" one by her family. However I had a difficult time understanding how a therapist (and twenty-nine year old woman) could not figure out how to take charge of her own life. Her reflections about sister Kaylie are hypercritical and her disapproval of Kaylie's lifestyle is quite apparent. Fortunately, as Danica begins to re-evaluate her life, she better understands Kaylie and offers her valuable and life-altering advice.

The one area that really highlights Danica's positive traits is her relationship with her "little sister" Michelle. Their interactions showed Danica's vulnerabilities and made her a much more sympathetic character. The warm and caring side of her personality is brilliantly showcased and helps to smooth over Danica's sharper edges.

The relationship between Danica and Blake was a little uncomfortable for me since Danica is Blake's therapist for much of the novel. There is a strong sexual attraction between them right from their first meeting and I questioned their decision to continue their professional relationship. Their romance feels rushed since they do not act on their feelings until very late in the story. While I definitely felt their passion for each other, I never really had a sense of an emotional connection between them.

Despite a few qualms about certain aspects of the novel, I enjoyed Sisters in Love. The personal growth of the main characters is believable and I liked the progress each of them makes in their lives. Despite the fact they deal with some serious issues, the story is fairly light and easy to read. I am very curious to see what Melissa Foster has planned next for the sisters and I am looking forward to Sisters in Bloom, the next novel in the Snow Sisters/Love in Bloom series.

I received a complimentary copy for review.

This is exactly the fun kind of quick read I was in the mood for. Not too overly complicated of a story but not too super predictable either. Just perfect! I love this group of characters already and can't wait to read the next book in the series. Thanks Melissa for always surprising me with a new kind of book!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great romance for this autumn! 31 août 2013

I was sent an ARC of this book by the author in exchange for my honest opinion.

I have enjoyed reading this book which is definitely women's fiction without being cheesy chick-lit. Danica Snow is a strong and independent woman who knows what she wants in life. Or does she? When she meets the local playboy Blake Carter, her world will suffer a radical change and she won't be sure about anything any longer. Can she trust him? Can she change enough as to have a relationship? Lots of things to consider and lots of things to change. Danica will struggle with her feelings, while at the same time struggling for being the support that her Little Sister and her biological sister need.

On the other hand, Blake's world is going to suffer a dramatic change too, a change that will make him reconsider a complete change of his attitude towards women. Is he in love? Can he go through Danica's barriers and find a place in her heart? The path won't be easy because he will have to deal at the same time with secrets from a friend and trying to support his friend's family. Things are not like he thought they were, and he will learn that reality can be deceptive. Will all that have an influence over his possible change in attitude?

This book is very well written, and even though it was a bit predictable, there were some plot twists that I couldn't see coming. I love that in a book. I love the surprise, the moment that makes me gasp or exclaim, "What the heck?!" This book has those moments, so they added to the pleasure of reading about the Snow Sisters, self-contained Danica and promiscuous Kaylie. In a way, they reminded me Elinor and Marianne, from Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, since they show with their behaviour two sides of the human nature: rational Danica vs. passionate Kaylie.

I loved the characters too, because you can see the change they suffer and you can go through the process with them, learning things along the way, just like them. That adds to the enjoyment and it helps to feel close to the characters too. I kind of hated Blake at first, but then I started liking him better, because I could see the struggles he was dealing with.

So it is a very good book if you like strong female characters who are not afraid of doing things and facing the consequences of their acts. Great romance for this autumn.

I can't even finish this book. Sex scenes started in chapter 3--and it had no redeeming value. Fine for fans of explicit sex scenes, I guess--but not for me.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Loved this book!! 8 septembre 2013

I was so excited to read this book. I recently read Melissa Foster's book, Have No Shame, and it is now one of my favorite books. I was hoping that this book would be just as good. I wasn't disappointed. It is another good book. I still love Have No Shame more, but this one still resonated with me.

For some reason, I've read several books lately that remind me of my mother. This is one of those books. My mom is a psychologist, similar to Danika. I was more like Kaylie, Danika's sister. I've always hated when my mother went into therapist mode with me, but I really wonder how hard it was/is for her. How do therapist separate themselves? You know, how do they separate their personal life from their professional life? It is especially hard when you live in a small community, where you are bound to run into clients all of the time. I know this happens to my mom all of the time. Now, I have a better idea of the difficulties she must face.

Probably my favorite excerpt is when Danika is in a therapy session:

"You're not here because you're perfect. You're here because you wanted to deal with something. We're dredging up those things that may not be what you want to know about yourself. Think of your mind like a garden. We're tilling the soil, bringing the buried stuff up to the surface -- the mucky, hard, rotting, forgotten things that have been hidden for probably far too long. This is the hard part. Seeing it for what it is."

I've never thought of therapy in this way, but it is so true. This book will make you think of your life and feelings. It is not just a work of fiction, it is kind of like a therapy session. Do you continue doing what is expected of you/what you "should do" or do you go after your dreams and take the more difficult road?

Like Melissa Foster's other book, Have No Shame, this book will have you examining your own life and the motivation of your actions. This is a wonderful book of fiction with great insights. I highly recommend Sisters In Love.

I received this book to review through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, all the opinions above are 100% my own.
