Présentation de l'éditeur

This practical guide helps therapists from virtually any specialty or theoretical orientation choose and adapt mindfulness practices most likely to be effective with particular patients, while avoiding those that are contraindicated. The authors provide a wide range of meditations that build the core skills of focused attention, mindfulness, and compassionate acceptance. Vivid clinical examples show how to weave the practices into therapy, tailor them to each patient's needs, and overcome obstacles. Therapists also learn how developing their own mindfulness practice can enhance therapeutic relationships and personal well-being. The Appendix offers recommendations for working with specific clinical problems. Free audio downloads (narrated by the authors) and accompanying patient handouts for selected meditations from the book are available at www.sittingtogether.com.

See also Mindfulness and Psychotherapy, Second Edition, edited by Christopher K. Germer, Ronald D. Siegel, and Paul R. Fulton, which reviews the research on therapeutic applications of mindfulness and delves into treatment of specific clinical problems.

A comprehensive guide full of examples 12 mars 2014

“Sitting Together: Essential Skills for Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy” is an extraordinary book in which the authors provide a deep well of information about practical ways mindfulness meditation can inform and enhance psychotherapy. Written for psychotherapists “from virtually any specialty, theoretical orientation, or practice setting” it successfully fills a gap in the field by guiding the reader in specific ways to introduce and bring mindfulness practices into psychotherapy.

It is well thought out and organized in a way that the material is clear and easily accessible. This book is full of suggestions for therapists and clients at all levels of mindfulness practice. It addresses the reality of patients’ differing needs as well as the fact that they may benefit from a variety of different approaches at different stages in the therapeutic process. The authors’ vast experience with the subject is evident in the many case vignettes and practical exercises they offer to aid therapists in providing mindfulness-based psychotherapy and in furthering their own personal mindfulness practices.

A detailed appendix is included in which the authors suggest specific practices that can be used when working with particular psychological disorders, populations and for clinicians’ own mindfulness development. The authors are very generous with handouts and recordings available on their website. Many thanks to the authors for this groundbreaking book.

Putting it all together 8 juin 2014

I got certified in Mindfulness and Psychotherapy through the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy a few years ago, but was still having difficulty incorporating mindfulness into my practice, other than in a very limited way. This book has helped clarify some lingering questions I still had (especially when it comes to working with trauma), and has inspired me to begin to take healthy risks with folks who're not at all familiar with mindfulness and it's potential to support their overall recovery efforts.

What I find especially helpful is that the Appendix includes a categorization of suggestions on how to select the various practices with different clinical issues and populations.

I really enjoy the title and the book cover - it inspires a sense of ease and calm, and connection!

Thorough, practical, and thoughtful guide for therapists 8 juin 2014

This book is a wonderful and much-needed addition to the literature on mindfulness for psychotherapists! The authors write with clarity and compassion about the challenges therapists face in our clinical work. They offer suggestions and guidelines about how to introduce mindfulness to clients who don't know about it and how to make careful decisions about when, why, to what degree, and with what approach we want to offer mindfulness-based interventions. The Appendix alone is worth the cover price--so easy to use and helpful! Have a client with depression? Flip to that page for suggested exercises. Someone with an addiction? Learn what really helps and, more important, what doesn't. What about people with PTSD, for whom "looking inward" or "being with the breath" can be triggering? The authors offer well-grounded and evidence-based suggestions for working with traumatized clients. A great resource!

Very Helpful! 29 mars 2014

As a longtime clinician who hasn't known how to bring Mindfulness practices into the consulting room, I found this book very helpful. The writing is clear, the exercises well described, and the techniques seem within reach. The book encourages clinicians to begin and deepen their own practices, and while I'm unlikely to immediately follow that suggestion, I feel the book has plenty to offer me and others in my shoes. Certainly, it awakened my interest in the uses of Mindfulness together with other kinds of psychotherapies, and it made me a better informed clinician, more likely to know how and when to make appropriate referrals. I also can imagine using some of the more basic exercises with patients, even though I lack deep personal experience of Mindfulness. I particularly appreciate the way the authors suggest different meditations for different conditions - anxiety, depression, traumatic loss and so forth. A thoughtful, useful, hands on book. A great place to start for beginners like me.

No clinical therapist's bookshelf is complete without it! 18 avril 2014

Sitting Together is a treasure-trove for those who seek to integrate mindfulness into their professional life as a therapist. Pollak, Pedulla and Seigel combine decades of expertise in meditation, teaching and clinical practice into an accessible and informative book that seamlessly weaves together passages on meditation and mindfulness, clinical case studies, and meditation exercises. As a meditation teacher, I appreciate the detail offered in these exercises, and the degree to which bodily awareness and self-compassion is emphasized. The authors discuss mindfulness as a stabilizing support for the therapist, as well as how to introduce mindfulness to patients. This is a fantastic book for therapists who are looking to take their practice to the next level, or for those whose practice has become stale. A groundbreaking, deeply intimate, beautifully written guide to becoming a mindful and compassionate psychotherapist.
