Slimming Meals That Heal is a well written, comprehensive diet and recipe book with a focus on changing lifestyles and the way we approach food. It will require a major shift in attitudes and home: you'll throw away all processed food (including butter, milk, bread, mayonnaise, etc.) to 'clean your system' and then spend two months slowly reintroducing foods to discover which are causing your system harm/inflammation/weight/creating emotional issues.

There have been a lot of books released lately about inflammation and hormones and how they cause weight gain or inhibit weight loss. The difference with this book is that the author is very thorough in her explanations, never talking down to the reader and giving the facts needed to support the need for a change in lifestyle. The emphasis is very definitely on permanent change and not on quick fixes. It's not about deprivation or being miserable just to lose weight. And it is mostly definitely not preachy or full of 'smoking can kill you' type of warnings. She lays out the facts and leaves it to the reader to decide how to use the information to change their lives for the better.

The book is a heady read: there is quite a bit to go through and that's a good thing. It is very well formatted to make the information easy to follow and understand. Charts, graphics, graphs, images, photographs, and illustrations all work to aide understanding how the digestive/body/hormone systems work and which foods help you/which foods hurt you. There clearly has been a lot of thought gone into this book, from presentation to the friendly yet informative writing.

The recipes at the end are especially well presented, providing all kinds of icons to help you distinguish what allergies or inflammatory ingredients might cause you problems. E.g., dairy free, gluten free, nut free, raw, high gllycemic index, legumes, etc. The author recognizes that different people have different 'triggers' in their bodies that cause the inflammation problems and these recipes can be slowly unrolled as we discover which foods are giving us problems. There are many photographs, the ingredients list is well presented, and the recipe steps are in separate paragraphs and numbered, making them easy to use. I really liked the recipes, even if I am still searching for several of the ingredients.

Note that the recipes have a lot of 'substitute' ingredients (e.g., Jicama instead of potatoes) - many I had never heard of (spirulina? Chlorella powder?). So not only did I need to completely clean out the pantry and fridge, but I also had to do some sleuthing (a Whole Foods Store nearby would be a great help) because quite a few of the ingredients just are regularly found in a town or village grocery store. But since this is a lifestyle change, it was something I felt I should be doing anyway.

In all, I was highly impressed with this book. Since we need to eat differently, using different and better foods for us is the whole point - so don't be scared off by the rare ingredients you'll need for the recipes. Also, I have both the Kindle and the book version and I recommend the book version. The Paperwhite especially loses a LOT of the formatting, making it a bit harder to read.

Since October my Sister and I have been following the Meals that Heal Inflammation book. I can't even begin to tell you how much Julie's plan has helped both of us. I've lost about 20 pounds, but more importantly my energy levels are so high! I have autoimmune problems and know the only way to manage it is through managing inflammation.

I just ordered my best friend a copy last night and can't wait for her to get it too!

I'm currently in school to become a certified health coach and I can't wait to use Julie's resources as part of my program!

As a Certified Health Fitness Specialist, Personal Trainer and cancer survivor with many food sensitivities, I was delighted to read Slimming Meals that Heal. In this age of consuming foods that are genetically modified, it's refreshing to be reminded that we do have choices when it comes to what we put on our plates and that it doesn't have to take a great deal of time to prepare a healthy, healing meal. Julie Daniluk presents holistic nutrition information in a way that is easy to understand and her words encourage us to learn, to select wholesome foods and to use better cooking methods. For those that have gluten and dairy intolerance issues, there are many recipes in this book that are free of these items. My personal favorite is Chicken Stew a la Julie It's delicious! Julie Daniluk's first book, Meals that Heal Inflammation is also terrific. Both books provide satisfying recipes and wonderful, simple ideas for adding variety to meals. Julie explains how to incorporate new super foods into our diets. Chia and hemp seeds make daily appearances in my meals. This book is a great resource for anyone looking to eat holistically or improve a deficient diet and manage weight. If you order this book, you won't be disappointed. Thank you, Julie, and Hay House for publishing such a great book!

What a great book! I had no idea how detailed and interesting this book would read. The first part of the book the author talks about health and how diets don't really work. The main thing I got from this section was nutrition and food allergies/issues. This book explained in an easy to understand context and I got a lot more from reading this book than my nutrition college class! The second part of the book is a ton of delicious recipes split up between meals/drinks and then a list to the side that shows if it's gluten free, dairy free, etc. So helpful to those of us who struggle with food allergies and issues!! Everything about this book is helpful an honest. The author talks about her personal eating and life and makes the meals and topics realistic and achievable. I do agree with the idea that diets don't work, they work for a week or two but eventually we go back to eating the food we weren't allowed to. In order to maintain weight it's a healthy lifestyle change, no just a crash diet.

If you want some healthy recipes and beneficial information on nutrition you need to read this book.

This is honestly the best nutrition book I have read.

This book is interesting and informative. The first part of the book explains the science of weight loss including the effects of allergies, hormones and more. The author states that antihistamines used to combat allergy symptoms may also trigger weight gain. That is bad news for me. Part two of the book is the SMTH program which the author calles a "live-it", that basically looks like an elimination type diet. Part three is the recipes. The recipes explain what benefits the ingredients have for your health. Many of the recipes include ingredients that are difficult to find like spirulina or chlorella powder, job's tears, celeriac root, hemp seeds, maca powder or ashwagandha powder, coconut butter, ambrosia apple slices,vitamin C crystals and rolled quinoa flakes. I have looked for rolled quinoa flakes in the healthy food sections of four different grocery stores including Sprouts and Trader Joes, but have not found them. The book does, however, include a resource section at the end that tells where you can order some of those items online. I do plan to try some of the recipes but I will most likely substitute for or eliminate the more obscure ingredients. I received this book free to review from Netgalley.
