Présentation de l'éditeur

Everybody's talking about online privacy, and for good reason: we have less privacy than ever before. Social media, online dating, photo sharing, mobile everything… It can make your life a dream - or a nightmare. The Smart Girl’s Guide to Privacy is the only guide focused on privacy for women. This book helps you hack your way through the jungle of privacy chaos and fight back against sleazy marketers, unethical megacorporations, scammers, stalkers, hacked apps, and thieves. A longtime journalist who’s covered both tech and sex, Violet Blue explains in nontechnical terms:

• What to do when a compromising photo of you ends up on the internet.
• Keep your address and phone number private from exes, stalkers and that creepy guy who just hit on you at the bar.
• Why online privacy is just as important — if not more important — than your physical privacy.
• What websites you can trust — and those you can’t.
• The privacy holes that hurt working women most.
• Fix reputation disasters.
• Act fast and save your privacy if you’ve been hacked, had your identity stolen, or are the target of "revenge" image posts.
• Find out if someone has been on your computer or in your email.
• Why appearing on “People Finder” websites isn’t as harmless as it seems.
* How to set up safe online profiles.

Unwanted exes, prying strangers, and conservative bosses have a disproportionate affect on our lives. When all you want is to have a life, how do you avoid trainwrecks like identity theft, online stalking, corporate privacy meddling, or something awful like revenge p*rn?

Whether you're looking for a simple social media privacy guide, trying to make a dating profile, prepping for a job search, trying to keep work and life separate, worried about the latest hacking news, or you're in an online crisis, you'll find the answers in The Smart Girl's Guide to Privacy.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great advice for normal people! 5 avril 2014
Par Ryan - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle
I'm a professional in computer security, and one of the big challenges for the industry is communicating simple, useful advice to normal people. Usually you end up with over-technical explanations which the reader just ignores, or objectively bad advice from "popular writers" who really have no idea what good practices are.

Fortunately, this book is both clear and correct. It doesn't do the obvious (but naive) thing and just say "don't use a computer at all!" -- realistically, there is a lot of benefit in having an online social life, and the book lays out the risks and precautions you can use to make your own decisions.

Some of the specific tools you use will change over time (new services launch every day, with unique security concerns), but the general advice in this book remains valid. This is a great simple guide to practical privacy, and I'd strongly recommend it, particularly to women online or people with daughters starting to use the Internet.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A mandatory resource for anyone! 5 avril 2014
Par Karen Mirsky - Publié sur Amazon.com

This is a bookshelf must-have for anyone who is interested in keeping their social life, financial choices, location, and personal preferences their own. Using language that is very approachable, Violet gives a comprehensive step-by-step overview of how to keep control over your private information while still accessing all the Internet has to offer. It contains both proactive measures and emergency instructions for those who have found their identity, phone or laptop stolen. It is comprehensive and very understandable and contains useful resources and instructions for Americans and Canadians, alike.

While this book is useful for anyone, it is all the richer for its gendered perspective, which is so often forgotten in online privacy debates: women, girls and LGBT persons have much more to worry about than being on some database. We are too often targets for creeps, predators or cyber-bullies who wish to silence us when we chose to use our voices in online communities or in the public eye. What a shame she put the dedication in the back because it says everything!

THE SMART GIRL'S GUIDE TO PRIVACY is an easy to digest users guide devoted to helping you protect your privacy (while still living a full life in our permanently online society) ... *and* why that matters.

This is not a collection of quickly outdated Lifehacker posts. Blue provides simple but profound theorycraft that will help you inventory and develop a personal security battle plan both to recover from privacy disasters and prevent them from happening now and for the future.

This is personal security advice from security professionals that anyone can use.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A must read for everyone who uses the internet and social media. 16 avril 2014
Par ep - Publié sur Amazon.com

As a female-bodied person, I am well aware of the dangers of existing in any form in social media. I have been stalked, harassed and intimidated both off- and on-line in a variety of ways by numerous individuals. This book is the future of self-protection, almost a cyber-pepper spray, if you will, except this book makes cyber-pepper spray seem like a platitude as it is far more than that.

Yes, this book provides methods of triage and patching, but it just as importantly shows methods of prevention and elimination of threats. Ms. Blue is absolutely correct in her assessment of the safety of female-gendered, and -bodied, peoples online in how there is almost none. She emphatically pronounces that, as in all things, victim blaming and shaming are not the answer as it is and will never be the fault of the victimized but of the aggressor.

Ms. Blue provides tips, hints, lists and links for anyone who has fallen victim to a breach in privacy as well as anyone concerned for their safety and security online (i.e. everyone).

A name is a dangerous thing to share, and I intend to utilize what I have learned from this book to protect myself and in turn my future from those in the world malicious enough to try to damage me and destroy it.

Thank you, Ms Blue for writing someone that applies to every person, regardless of gender, body, orientation or ability. Privacy is for all, and I am determined to have it.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Internet privacy for women 6 mai 2014
Par Kelly - Publié sur Amazon.com

I really appreciate how this book speaks to the specific issues that women face while on the internet. Most books and articles about internet security and privacy are written by men, who simply don't have the "target" status that women must face every day, on the internet as much as in real life. This book is clear and intelligent, and give you practical advice that you can use right away.
