Présentation de l'éditeur

Do you love the feel of a good lotion but find yourself unhappy with the cost, or wary of the chemical ingredients? Do you ever wonder if you could make it for yourself at home? Are you afraid to try because the lotion might not turn out well, or might even be unsafe?
Anne L. Watson's "Smart Soapmaking" was the first book based on modern techniques that eliminate the drudgery and guesswork from home soapmaking. Now, by popular demand, she continues her handcraft cosmetics revolution with the first practical, comprehensive book on making lotion from scratch.
Whether you want to make lotion for personal use or to sell, Anne allays any fears with methods that are proven safe and approved by experts, yet simple and easy enough to perform in your kitchen. You'll soon be making lotion that's better than any you've been buying, and at a fraction of the cost.
Anne L. Watson is the author of the wildly popular and widely acclaimed beginners book "Smart Soapmaking" and its companions, "Milk Soapmaking" and "Smart Lotionmaking." She has made soap professionally under the company name Soap Tree, and before her retirement was a historic preservation architecture consultant. Anne's other published books include "Baking with Cookie Molds" and several novels. Anne, her husband, Aaron, and their cat, Skeeter, live in Friday Harbor, Washington.

I have been making my own soaps and creams for years now but always like to see what's new. While the recipes in here are very good, there is nothing new if you are experienced at making creams and lotions. If you have never made lotion before, this would be THE book to get. My favorite one is out of print and I have not seen it sold anywhere.

This book is strictly for making body lotions. No creams or facial products. If you have ever gone to any lotion crafting websites then you will be familiar with all of the ingredients in here. If this is your first time making lotion, Anne describes everything that you will need and why.

That said, you will need a gram scale since they are more accurate and, while the ounces are also given in each recipe, using grams is actually easier. You'll also need to find some e-wax since all but one of the recipes use it. No substitutions are given. I like to use xanthan gum but it tends to make a sticky product. It also happens to be easier to find locally.

Other ingredients that you may need that recipes use are stearic acid, vitamin E, preservative, and conditioning emulsifier, which is also called BTMS. And then there are oils and butters, which should be easy to find. There are a couple of recipes that call for goat's milk and one that uses almond milk. Of course, you could substitute milk for the water in any of the recipes. I made a goat's milk lotion one time and it was incredibly thick. Be aware that adding milk will do that.

Getting lotion into bottles presents its own challenge, which Anne is up for. Follow her directions and you will be bottling lotion like a pro. I use wide-mouthed small jars but I don't sell my lotions and creams. Everybody in the house gets their own jar.

If you want to make your own recipes, Anne covers that in detail. She also tells you what to do if you want to start your own lotion-making business. And there is a trouble-shooting section. Finally, there is a list of suppliers in the back, which includes suppliers in several other countries besides the US. These are the most popular ones.

If you want to make all-purpose body lotions, get this book. You truly will be making anything better than what you will find in a store.

This is it! The Best Ever How To Lotion making book you will ever want and need! No more lumpy, heavy, oily "pretend" lotions from other books - these recipes all work and are REAL lotions. Once again, Anne has prepared clear, concise, easy to follow instructions that are truly step by step for anyone to understand. There are no hidden mysteries, no contradictions, nothing confusing. I have made a few lotions from this book already, following Anne's instructions, and all my friends are begging for more! Anne also includes very important and essential information on keeping everything clean and sanitized to prevent any likelihood of contamination, a factor that many other sources 'skip' and put in the too-hard basket. She also includes lots of very helpful tips and has a 'frequently asked questions' section at the back. And even best of all, you can actually contact the author if you have any other questions. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Easy to Understand Lotion Making 19 décembre 2011

Although I was one of the testers for this book, I had no intention of actually making lotion because I "knew" it was too difficult for me. Why make lotion when I could buy a base, add a litle fragrance and call it my own? Well, I flinched everytime a customer would ask if I had made the lotion that was being offered. Now I can say yes and accept the praises for the lotion I actually make. This book made me want to make lotion!!
As she has done with all of her How To books, Anne writes as if you are sitting across the kitchen table from her as she takes you through each aspect of lotion making. She has the innate ability to anticipate every question that might come up and the instructions and recipes are always very easy to follow. This is a must have book for all soap and lotion crafters.
To get to know Anne better, go to her home page at [...] and see what else she has to offer. Her fiction is memorable. She is the consummate story teller. An all around talented writer.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Don't attempt to make lotion without this book! 18 décembre 2011

In Anne Watson's casual, easy to read, easy to understand, friendly sit-down chat at the kitchen table style, she has made lotion making accessible to everyone, not just soap makers. Whether making lotions just for yourself or to sell, this book is a must have. In this tough economy where self-sufficiency is becoming more and more important, Anne teaches you to make quality lotions that work best for you (better than store-bought and without the unnecessary and unwanted chemicals) and save you money at the same time. I highly recommend this book for beginners and experienced lotion makers alike. All of Anne's how-to books (both for soap AND lotion) will pay for themselves over and over and are worth every penny and a whole lot more!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Fantastic Book! 18 décembre 2011

Anne Watson has done it again. Her books are always simple and clear. She has a way of giving all the information that is needed to make a quality product, whether it is soap or lotion yet never making the instructions intimidating. After reading this book, I was easily able to walk into the kitchen and make a quality lotion that I had control of the ingredients.

I have tried several of the recipes in the book and they have all been fantastic. They worked and gave me a nice creamy lotion that when applied was absorbed into the skin in minutes and lasted all day. There is a section in the book on formulating your own recipes and I have done that also. Anne makes herself available by email to answer any questions that might come up along the way. Now where do you get that kind of help?

If you want to have control of the ingredients in the lotion you use and and make a yummy lotion, then this is the book for you.
