A Fracking Nightmare 24 juillet 2013
Par W. R. Flynn - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Snake Oil does it all. Point by point Snake Oil delivers a well-argued case exposing the environmental catastrophe brought about by natural gas fracking. It also brings to light the Big Lie that it will deliver long term energy independence and shares the little-known fact of the sharp declines in individual field production. This book furthermore explores why the government, media and industry have all lined up in support of this practice and have manufactured the myth of massive reserves. If you want to know the truth about hydrofracking, please read Snake Oil.

Each Of Us Can Choose 26 juillet 2013
Par Clinton Callahan - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
This is not a hate book. Snake Oil is page after page of soothing clarity about what is going on in the world. The problem with becoming more aware is that each new disappointment hurts so deeply. I see again that I am being betrayed by the people I voted to office for making wise decisions to create a bright future for my grandchildren. My pain of facing the hyped-up fracking cure-all with clear eyes is decreased with the help of Richard Heinberg's calm and frankly sane analysis in Snake Oil. Each chapter paves the way for me to see through yet another layer of industry-sponsored governmental deception while keeping my center and therefore my ability to take actions that make a valuable difference. Other people's emotional and seemingly patriotic commitment to natural-gas-positive policy decisions fails to sway me. Thanks to this book I am no longer one of the sheep. I am making a list of who gets this book from me for Christmas so they can escape from being counted among the powerless sleeping.

Right indeed! but wrong, unfortunately! 27 mars 2014
Par Jean Bernard Minster - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
Heinberg's book left me of two minds: He reviews the temporary nature of market benefits brought about by recent advances in fracking (a very old technology), and discusses the dark side of the industry very rationally. I think the time table he suggests for a painful outcome is probably close to being correct, certainly in the absence of well conceived and well structured national and international energy policies. The book represents the outcome of very considerable homework, which most readers could not do by themselves, and for that, I am very grateful. I was very disappointed, however, that he chose only to discuss hydro, solar, and wind as alternate sources of energies. I think he "drank the Kool-Aid" of the well-meaning but unrealistic (on that scale) "renewable energy" organizations. As a result, he basically ignores the only technology that has a remote chance of providing all of mankind with a reliable, safe source of energy with suitable energy return on energy invested for the next several centuries, namely 4th generation nuclear power, in the form of integral fast reactors (IFR). I have to assume that this is mainly due to ignorance on his part (or lack of time to do the necessary homework). As a result, his opinion is strongly colored by the experience with second generation reactors. The unfortunate consequence is that his reader is left with the sad conclusion that the only hope is to invest in inadequate technologies (or pray for a way to beat the second law of thermodynamics). This is unfair to the readers, since the answer does exist, and is affordable (see "Prescription for the Planet" by Tom Blees, and also [...] ).

Real Hope, Not False Promises 26 juillet 2013
Par Jed Diamond - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
We would all like to believe that the Ship of Industrial Civilization can go on as usual. If we run out of one form of energy, we'll just switch to another one. The age of oil has allowed for populations go grow and for all of us to live beyond our means. But as Richard Heinberg reminds us, "the party is lover."

"People don't seem to realize it that it is not like we're on the Titanic and we have to avoid the iceberg," says Rob Watson, CEO and Chief Scientist of The EcoTech International Group, who Pulitizer-Prize winning author Tom Friedman calls one of the best environmental minds in America. "We've already hit the iceberg. The water is rushing in down below. But some people just don't want to leave the dance floor; others don't want to give up on the buffet. But if we don't make the hard choices, nature will make them for us."

Richard Heinberg offers us real hope, not false promises. You won't need to "read it and weep." You'll read it and rejoice.

A comprehensive de-bunk of shales 12 novembre 2013
Par Un client - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Basically, there are two lines that one can take on shales.

First, shale gas (and oil) is the twenty-first century energy revolution, whose abundance will create American (and broader western) energy independence and turn the US into "Saudi America".

Alternatively, the shale boom is a scam, a Wall Street-hyped bubble. This view - essentially the line taken by this book - is reinforced by precipitous rates of production decline, ultra-high cash and energy costs, and the creation of a drilling treadmill as operators are forced into drilling ever more wells to stave off a slump in output. The leap in production is a simple function of the huge sums invested in the shale scam. By 2017 or thereabouts, shale production volumes will be in sharp decline.

Of course, you can choose to believe in the optimistic narrative, just as you can choose to believe in Santa and his elves. If you want the facts, though, this book is for you, a masterful de-bunk of the energy equivalent of the dot-com bubble.
