Ok it's a world's first : a book about the use of (social) media in Healthcare that gives a extensive insight in all the different tools that are present and how they can be used in healthcare/medicine.

A book badly needed since a lot of people are using social networks for use around healthcare related topics. Still in medical education this is not addressed in medical school. Partially because there where no good books about that topic yet, up until now that is. Healthcare professionals are not alone in this by the way, almost 70% of CEO aren't using social media either.

Written by a young Doctor who after graduation got his Suma Cum Laude PhD at the University of Budapest Bertalan Meskó. As long as i know him (2009) he dedicated his life to making information more accessible for both patients and caregivers. With his platform Webicina.com he provides curated info disease-based, with all kinds of social media presence of it. He created the first ever University course on Social Media for medicine that he is sharing for free, and now he showed his latest "mojo" : a book "Social Media in Clinical Practice"

Reading it two things come to mind :

1.The gigantic amount of information and use of social media in healthcare already, but only by a small part of Healthcare professionals.
2. Professionals NOT yet working in the arena create some new kind of literacy for themselves.

He spoke about the topic on my latest TEDxNijmegen and the day after addressed over 100 students from our University.
his book should be on the list of mandatory books for medical students. I will try to do so at our University in Nijmegen. So, strongly recommended reading : Social Media in the Medical Practice by @berci

This book is the first of its kind and a must read for anyone interested in Social Media in healthcare. Despite his youth, Dr. Bertalan Meskó (or Berci) is already an acknowledged authority in this field. As the founder of the world's first university elective course focusing on Medicine and Social Media for medical and public health students Berci is an authoritative voice on the subject. You just have to Google his name to check that I'm not exaggerating.

By writing this educational book he has again demonstrated his passion and commitment in guiding medical students and physicians to acquire skills in digital literacy to improve patient experience and clinical outcomes.

As someone who has a vast knowledge and experience in the practical use of Social Media the book is well structured, clearly written and full of useful tips and well-chosen examples. Each chapter ends with a self-test and next steps to encourage you to think about how to apply the concepts in your own practice. How to deal with privacy concerns and the protection of the confidentiality of patients have been definitely highlights for me.

All links and further reading recommended in each chapter have been grouped at the end of the work, which can be useful for later review.

As a conclusion, 'Social Media in Clinical Practice' is an essential reading and I will be suggesting it to everyone I know in healthcare who wants to take advantage of the Social Media space professionally but is not sure about how to proceed.

Dr. Bertalan Meskó, MD, PhD is a double doctorate ("Mr.Doctor 2.0") and a social media star in medicine.

"Social Media in Clinical Practice" is his new book and earns a solid four (4) out of five stars from me. The only reason it doesn't reach five (5) out of five stars is because I didn't evaluate a print version of the book and therefore can't comment on the quality of the binding, typeface and pages of the print. The digital copy I reviewed was more than satisfactory and in full colour.

Published by Springer in August 2013, Dr. Meskó's "Social Media in Clinical Practice" is an excellent introduction to social media tools and practices in medicine. Its intended audience is physicians, medical students and other health professionals but I could see it having audiences beyond to consumers and patients. The book provides an array of social media links, websites and other pointers to information but specifically is rich in links in the appendices. The book is more than a mere catalogue of social media links, however. It provides useful context about using the Internet for medicine and some fine chapters on searching the web (i.e., Meskó covers a variety of search tools as well such as Google Scholar, Wolfram Alpha and even PubMed). All librarians should read these sections to determine how physicians perceive search engines and open web searching.

"Social Media in Clinical Practice" is structured very well. It's organized in sixteen (16) chapters and a conclusion, with satisfactory index and appendices. The book is compact, and highly-selective about navigating the web in the 21st century -- especially when Meskó is generous in sharing his understanding. The author should be applauded for taking on a fast-moving topic liks social media especially for his practical approach to writing in the English language (which is a major reason why I buy books like this). A small point about language: in some cases, phrases and words used could have been edited for readability. Clearly, however, Meskó has a flair for figuring out what matters in social media and medicine -- and who better to tell us than a medical futurist and worldwide leader in the area? Meskó's years of blogging and curating websites and pathfinders which he builds at his website "Webicina" ([...] have helped him to express himself succinctly.

The book is filled throughout with helpful figures and tables, and excellent chapter overviews called "Key Points". Just in case you want emphasis, the book provides salient references, simple tests and "next steps" in order for you to implement a social media tool such as a blog, wiki or virtual conference. In the online version I reviewed, many of the embedded links are live and take you to the many examples discussed by Meskó.

The book is destined to become widely-used and cited. It's a good summary of the "state-of-the-art" in social media and medicine (including mobile devices) in 2013.

This book should not be missing on any doctor's bookshelf! In today's world this is a niche publication.
Just now started to teach this discipline in some medical universities, so if you have finished your studies, after your degree that is a good chance to be up-to-date!
Not just for medical professionals, but also for (e-) patients!

1st DIY Digital Handbook for Healthcare Professionals and Enthusiasts 12 septembre 2013

If you are interested in the Internet and Healthcare, Social Media in Clinical Practice by Berci (Bertalan) Mesko, published in August 2013 by Springer, should be on your fall reading list. In case you think I am influenced by the fact that I know the author, Berci Mesko, well you are right! His hard work and desire to do things professionally do impress me.

The book, Social Media in Clinical Practice, which I'm going to call SMCP for this review, brings the reader much more than its title implies. SMCP takes us by the hand through all of the practical knowledge that will help the reader use the Internet and related tools efficiently. In addition to being a guide to the use of Social Media, SMCP presents search engines, RSS Feeds, Virtual Worlds, blogs and how to start one Mobile Apps, collaborating online, how Wikipedia works, presentations and slideshows, and even email and privacy.

These chapter by chapter topics, with easy to understand explanations and notes for further reading, are useful regardless of the reader's involvement in healthcare. Each chapter first explains a digital concept that is applicable to all subjects and then brings it back to healthcare. And while many books on the Internet and medicine stray into banalities, making them a waste of time for people who work on the Internet and Medicine, SMCP will bring learning to everyone including "experts."

Furthermore, while Internet books are notoriously out of date by the time they are published, SMCP is completely up-to-date. I also believe that it will be easy for the author to update it for future editions, given the content structure, by changing the examples, or potentially adding or deleting a chapter as needed.

This review would not be complete without some recommendations to the author. 1) I would add a subtitle so that the potential reader understands that the content goes beyond Social Media; this is a DIY digital handbook for doctors and other healthcare enthusiasts. 2) I would enrich the chapter about ePatients, which as it stands, is a bit too simplistic. 3) I would include more multi-country data.
