4.0 étoiles sur 5 good stuff overall, but the final piece is special 23 février 2012

Note: this review is about the 2011 Tor anthology. Amazon seems to have mixed up the 2011 and 2012 reviews.
As usual with an anthology, I liked some stories and wasn't crazy about others - in general, the ones I liked less struck me as a matter of individual taste, not lack of quality. That is, they were good, just not for me. My favorites included Michael Swanwick's "The Dala Horse", set in a post-apocalyptic Norseland; Charlie Jane Anders' "Six Months, Three Days", about how to live your life well even when you can see what's going to happen; and "A Clean Sweep With All the Trimmings", Damon Runyon with aliens and sly commentary on why sexism can hurt you. But then...

Then I got to the final novella and the reason I'm writing a review: Harry Turtledove's extraordinary "Shtetl Days". This one is important. It's a nifty trick, in that Turtledove managed to write an alternate history where the Nazis won without being completely depressing (if you don't spend too much time thinking about the backstory). The heart of it, though, is about being human, about how you live determining who you are, and about why even quiet resistance to oppression matters. It's also about being Jewish. This is what might have happened if Sholem Aleichem lived a century later and wrote SF.

I tend to enjoy short story collections, so if you don't or if you're neutral on the format then take my review with a grain of salt.

This is a great collection of stories with plots ranging from the predictable (two precogs dating) to the bizarre (winning the love of a man through... well, I'd hate to spoil it for you). As I read through the stories, I found no common threads, which is nice; it was a diverse collection, so if I found myself not in love with a particular premise, writing style or character, then I could count on the next one to be completely different.

In general I liked all the stories to some degree, but that degree was fairly lukewarm in a couple cases. Particular favorites included 'A Clean Sweep with All the Trimmings' and 'Shtetl Days', which was a particularly powerful alternate reality piece which I will definitely revisit.

I strongly recommend this collection -- it's especially great for the price! ;)

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great Collection! 8 juillet 2013

I didn't love every single story, but that is the point of the collection. All the stories in this collection were very good, but Harry Turtledove's "Shtetl Days" blew me away. It is novella length and not really Science Fiction, in my opinion. I highly recommend it to everyone.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Some very good stories 5 octobre 2013

Anthologies are always something of a risk. Themed anthologies rarely stick close to their theme. Single-editor anthologies (as with magazines) often end up with a numbing sameness in the feel or mood of the pieces. Happily, this 'best of' collection avoids both traps.

Up to about the halfway point, I thought that the anthology had even managed that rare feat of including only really strong stories. Unfortunately, after the first few stories, things start to weaken, and by the time I reached Paul Park's 'poem', it was clear that too many of the stories are self-consciously 'intellectual'. I'm a fan of intelligent writing, and some of these stories provide that. Some, however, seem designed more to display the author's cleverness than to tell a good story. They're good, in a technical sense, but they're not engaging of moving.

To pick one example (by an author whose trilogy Starbridge Chronicles was both intellectual and excellent), look at the 'poem' "Ragnarok" by Paul Park. It's broken up into equal-sized units of free verse, but there's nothing else about it that says 'poem' to me. In fact, it's a short story written in brief, declarative sentences, set out in the form of a poem. The story wasn't bad, but the whole thing seemed contrived and awkward. Some of the other stories displayed an equivalent awkwardness in their (failed) effort to be clever or poetic. It's a shame, because much of the material was good. Only one of the stories was really weak, though the final story drags on well after its point is made.

All in all, well worth reading (and it's free!) for several very good stories. I can see re-reading some of the stories here, though others I may well skip the next time around.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good collection 26 juin 2014

This is a great collection of short fiction. As several of the other reviewers have noted, Harry Turtledove's novella Shtetl Days is truly outstanding, but Nnedi Okorafor's Hello, Moto is great, too, and I enjoyed most of the pieces in this collection.
