This is a classic Blue Note from the mid-sixties (recorded on July 6th, 1964). It was released for awhile in the Connoiseur Series in the early nineties (I believe) but has been out of print since. This is a crime. All of us that love this type of music should be firing off e-mails to Blue Note demanding the rerelease of this, Moncur's other great CD, Evolution, and all those lovely mid-sixtes Jackie McLean CDs (Action, Right Now, Consequence, etc.) Music like this should never be unavailable.
The band on this CD is Wayne Shorter on the tenor sax, Herbie Hancock on the piano, Cecil McBee on the bass and Anthony Williams on the drums. Grachan Moncur III plays the trombone and wrote the compositions. And what wonderful compositions! They are the following (with times in paranthesis): Gnostic (11:41), Thandiwa (8:16), The Twins (12:53), and Nomadic (7:41). The heads are fairly simply but the overall group sound is unusual- spacious with thorny harmonies or just plain free. One of the things that Moncur does that I really enjoy is on Nomadic which is basically just Williams in an extended drum solo with various obligatti from the other instruments. Since this is Tony Williams this is a wonderful and fascinating piece.
So get on your high horse people and fire off those e-mails to Blue Note and demand they free up this stuff! Or, at least, that it goes thru a limited release every five years or so. Music like this belongs to us all.

One disc approximately 40 minutes long. Remastered in 2008,the sound is crisp and clean. Alfred Lion of Blue Note Records was never one who pushed "the new thing" in jazz, even when other labels were at the time releasing this kind of music with a bit of success. Having said that,Blue Note did release some albums that looked ahead. Jackie McLean's DESTINATION OUT! and ONE STEP BEYOND,for example, were turning points for both jazz and Blue Note.

This quintet is made up of musicians who went on to play some of the most forward-thinking jazz of it's time. Besides Moncur III on trombone,we have Wayne Shorter on tenor sax,Herbie Hancock on piano,Cecil McBee on bass, and Tony Williams(who was all of eighteen) on drums. Together they make up a great cohesive unit on this set. The first track lets the listener know they are in for something different;indeed if that was the only track you heard you might wonder about the other tunes. It is almost atonal in composition, with everyone playing around and sometimes over one another, while at the same time weaving a dense blanket of sound that is fairly intense. The second track (all the tunes are by Moncur III)is basically straight ahead jazz in execution and is a real contrast to the first track. It's almost as if the players are letting the listener catch his breath after the first opening salvo.

The third track is somewhat of a blend of "outside" music and straight ahead jazz. While there is a melody it's pushed into the background, only to reappear again. This is one of those tunes that demands the listener's full attention,as the group switches back and forth, and sometimes blends both styles of music together. Being the longest track on the album,it gives the players plenty of opportunity to stretch out, which is very satisfying. The last track starts out with drumming, sounding almost like a strange military march, which then quickly segues into a call and response type thing between the two horns. Then they quiet down and Williams comes in on drums in that same quirky off-kilter march style. This track is basically a showcase for Williams' technique-the rest of the group fall in and out of the composition seemingly at will(but you know this was a true composition by it's tightness)letting Williams' drums carry the load.

All in all this is a good example of Moncur III's writing and (with the rest of the band) playing skills. It is certainly a welcome addition to the few recordings under his name.

Essential early 60's jazz release that has been overlooked for so long but is an important part of the beginnings of the free form avant garde jazz movement of the early 60's. This remaster has a pristine, professional enjoyable sound and is incredibly well done (courtesy of Rudy Van Gelder) and I would put this cd pressing up against my original vinyl copy and prefer it hands down over it. I'm sure this will annoy the vinyl purists out there, but in fact, this version from 2008 IS the definitive version to have. It has been transferred from the original analog tapes to 24 bit fidelity. I'm still waiting for a proper remastered vinyl repressing of this album by Blue Note but I see no evidence that that will take place any time soon. In the meantime, this cd version is the one to own. I do not have the European 180 gram remaster that was done several years ago by Blue Note but I am generally not impressed with that series from others I own. I find them generally flat sounding and over compressed for me to enjoy on vinyl so I am not spending any more money on that series.

For fans of Tony Williams, this is some of his earliest playing on record and it's miles beyond any other jazz drummer's chops at that time. Also includes stellar early performances by Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Cecil McBee, besides Mr. Moncur. I find myself listening to this album frequently because it's a timepeace from an era that is long gone and is sorely missed amongst today's mostly inferior music. Takes Moncur's 'Evolution' to its next logical step. Mesmerizing stuff.

Wayne playing Grachan's groundbreaking compositions. A record that brought the avant garde to a larger audience. Moving stuff.
