5.0 étoiles sur 5 Heart-breaking but enjoyable read 11 septembre 2013
Par Alice Berger - Publié sur
Richard Casey, seventeen years old, is in the hospice unit of the hospital. But even though they've told him he's got less than a month left, he's not done living yet. In fact, he's more than ready to make love to the fifteen year-old girl, also in the ward, who doesn't want to die a virgin. Richard is determined to be the biggest troublemaker the hospital staff have ever seen.

But Richard is under constant watch by the hospital staff, parents and other family members who hover around the ward 24-7, and the "Br'ers" as he calls them - religious staff there to assist in the transition from life to death. All Richard wants to do is have some fun, but no one wants to let him.

A book about dying teenagers would probably only appeal to the more morbid of us. But Hollis Seamon has done a magnificent job of portraying these teens in such a real light. They're just teens - not adults - and they're not willing to give up their spunk and personality, no matter what. Even though there is no doubt from the beginning how the story will ultimately end, this is not a depressing tale. My only disappointment is that no one in the story expresses any concern about the afterlife, and how to make sure one ends up in the right place. Overall, this is a great teen read.

Warnings: sexual situations and language

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Some kind of wonderful ... 31 mai 2014

How can I have forgotten to add this wonderful book to my shelves? And I even blurbed it!!! It's about what one might call an ultimate romance, in that it's between a boy and a girl in a hospice. Somehow, it's hilarious, and somehow it's deeply moving in exciting, unexpected ways. Yeah, sure, I've read THE FAULT IN OUR STARS and he has twenty million Twitter followers and he high-fives people and says Awesome! a lot and I think he's very earnest and completely uninteresting and I hope he gets twenty million more Twitter followers and is described for the rest of his life as the author who really figured out how to work social media. Which -- perhaps this is age speaking -- strikes me as a tiny, tiny achievement. This book, though, is a real one, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

This is one of those books that really tugs on the heart strings, yet doesn't go into the Twilight mush. This book is a very good read and an astonishing first novel from Hollis Seamon. A must read for all teens and adults alike!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 More than just "Young Adult" Literature 3 février 2014

Hollis Seamon's "Somebody Up There Hates You" (SUTHY) is not just for young adults; though told by a young man, SUTHY is not just for boys. As a 27 year-old woman, SUTHY touched my heart. Seamon has crafted real characters; no one, not even the "villains," are a stereotype. Seamon is acutely aware that we all come with our own baggage. The main character, Richard, moves from situation to situation within the plot, discovering, heartbreakingly, that all of us have to grow up--even if we're days away from dying.

I've also checked in with friends in the medical community--Seamon describes accurately what hospice looks like (e.g., Richard's declining vision/strange hallucinations is indicative of a build up of ammonia in the brain, common with people who are dying). Seamon's dedication at the beginning of the book is fitting--she's seen it and so she's wrote it down.

There's been a lot of hype about "The Fault in Our Stars" of late and I have to say--as a reader of both, SUTHY is the one worth reading. Death is not glorified or romanticized in Seamon's book--it's made real. It's long fingers touches everybody. One sees, with each turn of the page, how frail each of us truly is. SUTHY causes us to ask two very important questions (as young and mature adults): in Richard's shoes, what would you do? More importantly, what wouldn't you do?

Book #40 Read in 2014
Somebody Up There Hates You by Hollis Seamon (YA)

This is so much more than a cancer book. Richard (main character) is written in such a way that his voice is so true to life. Richard is in hospice and so is Sylvie....and both are teenagers. They try to retain some sort of normalcy with their budding romance but that creates more problems for both them and their families. The secondary characters (the harpy, Edward, Richard's mother, uncle and grandmother) are interesting and bring even more depth to the book. I could see this book being called a grittier The Fault in Our Stars...and I mean that as a compliment. Add to this that the author is 1. local and 2. was my Honors English 101 professor at college and that just completes the package. I highly recommend it.
