Bravo!!!

Dallas Green is rumored throughout the indie scene as being probably one of the nicest guys in the world, let alone the industry. And this CD definitly give evidence as to why he's held in such a high regard when it comes to sensitivity and creativity. Not only is the cover art beautiful, and spectacularly done, but the CD itself is a solid rock of melody and melancholy.

The lyrics could be reviewed all on their own as some of the greatest poetry written by a musician. And that's saying a lot considering most lyrics nowadays hold the significance of rhyming sad, with sad.

As Dallas sings throughout this album it intices a wide array of emotions, causing memories of heartbreak, love, success, loss, everything. Every song can relate to how anyone can feel and I really think that's what make's this record so special. It has meaning on a universal level that can touch the heartfelt moments of everyones life.

The musical arrangements are beautifully put together switching from accoustic, to light electric in the background, to even a few key notes from a piano. I can't praise enough how well put together the songs on this album are. And considering the change of pace from the heavy hardcore music that is; Alexisonfire, Dallas Green completly astonishes listeners proving further more that he can indeed sing a song as well as rock your ass off.

Masterfully recorded with high quality and amazing effects, this is a must have for anyone that needs a good record to close your eyes and remember the days gone by. I urge everyone to pick this amazing album up. You will not regret it.

CITY AND COLOUR - Sometimes

-

Dallas Green, for those that may not know was in the Pop-Emo/Screamo Hardcore band called Alexisonfire, which has disbanded. (so I've heard) So he picked up his Acoustic Guitar... pieced it together with some well written poetry and made one of the finest super-mellow albums I've heard in awhile. Naming his solo work after himself, CITY (`Dallas') And COLOUR (`Green') Whish is actually quite witty.

To be honest this actually seems sincere not just generic forced loved songs... these actually seem to have substance which is especially important when being a solo artists.

If you like Acoustic Pop-Rock... This is a easily worth a listen.

Favorite Song: Like Knives, Coming Home, and Casey's Song.

Canadian singer/songwriter/guitarist Dallas Green recently made the wise decision to, on a bit of downtime from his musical priority Alexisonfire, release a solo album. None of this is new material, however. Dallas, being a gifted songwriter, simply picked his 10 favorite previously unreleased songs straight out of his closet. And the results are superb. The name of the artist is Dallas Green but he calls himself "City and Colour", supposedly not intentionally after his name(City/Dallas, Colour/Green).

The majority of Sometimes is driven by Dallas' singing and acoustic guitar, although once in a while you'll hear a piano or violin. This is such a contrast to Alexisonfire(Green's main project), which is a heavy darker sounding screamer/metal hybrid. But it's for the better, because here we see what Green is capable of once left on his own.

The first track off of Sometimes is a short, albeit obscure song called "Off By Heart". Running at just under 2 minutes, I imagine it was just thrown on to create heft. Although it ended up being one of the better songs on the record, and also a good showcase of Dallas's singing abilities. Following immediately after is "Like Knives", arguably the best track on the disc.

"Hello, I'm in Deleware" is the third track on Sometimes, opening with an infectious "can't-get-it-out-of-your-head" acoustic melody that really shows off Green's writing prowess. Again this is more of the emotionally driven lyricism that dominates City and Colour's debut. The next song, "Save Your Scissors" was actually the first single off of the album(combined there are now two), a number one hit on MuchMusic here in Canada, it has an insanely catchy chorus and once again displays Dallas Green's vocals.

There is one song I could have done without, "In the Water, I am Beautiful", which I find sort of annoying and lyrically cheesy. Probably his weakest lyrics on Sometimes. Other than that the rest of the songs range from good to fantastic. "Day Old Hate" is definitely a contendor for best song off the album. Again another amazing lyrical outpouring of emotion and melody. It's a slow burn, at about 6:44, but it's definitely one of my favorite songs, about as good as "Like Knives", another beautifully written/arranged song.

I debated with myself over whether Sometimes was worthy of 5 stars or not, but after having listened to Sometimes at least 30 or so times, I can safely say that I think it's worth 5 stars. Even if a few of the tracks aren't as inspired as the rest of the album.

City and Colour's future is unknown at this point, but going based off of what Dallas Green has said concerning his music career, it sounds like this was just a product resulting from a back catalogue of previously written material and some downtime from what he holds most important right now, Alexisonfire. I can only hope that he will write some more songs and maybe throw in a few more from his back catalogue, because this album is touching, and I will forever consider it a sentimental treasure.

I saw "Save your Scissors" on tv I knew there was something special about it. So, I went to the mall that very day and bought "Sometimes" and I've been listening to the ENTIRE album almost non-stop for the past few days. The thing that I think is unique about this album is that I find myself listening to it from begining to end unlike other albums where only 3 or 4 songs are exceptional and are listened to the most, every track on this album is perfect. The album's vibe is maintained from track one to ten. I highly recommend that you at least download some of the songs because this is truly one of the best albums I've listened to in a long time.

Now I have loved Alexisonfire since the first came out a number of years ago. So when Dallas was coming out with this I would for sure pick it up. Not knowing for sure what it was going to sound like. I put the cd in and it has hardly come out. It is written so well and well played. This album even though it comes from a "emo band singer" deserves to be up there.
