HASH(0x9fb7f2dc) étoiles sur 5 Not enough GREAT metal with clean vocals like this! 8 décembre 2011
Par wcurtis - Publié sur Amazon.com
I just got this album on vinyl (only 5/500 more left of this pressing before you gotta wait for Profound Lore to reissue it en-masse!) and I'm listening to my mp3 copy now.... BRUUUTAL! God, if you've ever liked anything good you'll also like this album. It's like Sleep, Heart, Hendrix, Priest, and Sabbath simultaneously giving birth to each other's babies for 30-some-odd minutes.

Lady-vocals are for winners. If you can't handle female-fronted bands you probably also can't handle sexual intimacy or doing anything else right with your life. Get over it.

Do yourself and the band a favor and hop over to their bandcamp before you purchase... just do it. do it. do it. do it.

Thanks for listening! This is my first Amazon review but I just couldn't stand their being so little coverage of this great band out there in the mainstream.

HASH(0x9fb7f5e8) étoiles sur 5 Excellent release from a Portland doom band! 23 mars 2012

Don't let the 4 stars instead of 5 discourage you. I think this is a really good album and I listen to it often. It is sludgy, intense, definitely heavy, and definitely enjoyable throughout. My favorite track is (probably) "Hare's Stare" as it displays the band's most inventive material, shifting back and forth easily between two different rhythmic feels. Other songs will also play around with these interesting rhythmic feels, but it never feels forced and absolutely never feels like "math metal." It's always much more natural sounding than that. The song writing is solid, with a pervasive sense of doom and dread throughout. All the songs are pretty slow, nothing resembling speed or thrash metal, no double bass blasting away, for example. Uta Plotkin's lead vocals are clean and effective, very skillful and attractive, and often very rhythmically delivered. She doesn't growl or scream (which is fine), and she can be plenty intense - no shortcomings there. The guitar work is heavy and also there are long sequences of jam type soloing. Don't freak out on me, but I do think I detect a little grunge influence (although all doom metal is slow and sludgy, right, so maybe it's just more pure sludge and not grunge at all), but nothing that turns me off. There is probably more bluesy influence detectable in the soloing than say, classical influence, but I certainly don't hear this as blues at all. It's really more...heavy, sludgy, and doomy! Good sound overall, I just think the songwriting here doesn't really rise to the level of, say, Blood Ceremony's "Living With the Ancients," which I think is awesome. At the time of this writing, Witch Mountain has just finished recording their next album, "Cauldron of the Wild", but it is not released yet. Based on "South of Salem," I'm definitely looking forward to it. Highly recommend this band!

HASH(0x9fb7f7e0) étoiles sur 5 Great doom metal... 15 juin 2012
Par brjoro - Publié sur Amazon.com

There are so many great 'doom' metal bands out there at the moment, it's great to see. Portland's Witch Mountain have the Sabbath riffs and grooves down pat. What makes them stand out is an absolutely astounding female vocalist who has so much power, passion and soul in her voice it's incredible. It's like if Ann Wilson of Heart was the singer for the golden era early 70s Sabbath instead of Ozzy, she is that good. And yes, as I said, these guys have the Sabbath vibe, the riffs are killer, it grooves, they can jam, it basically just rocks. And it's on Profound Lore, probably the best 'underground' metal label at the moment. Very highly recommended...

Loving Uta's vocals on this one! Slow muddy riffs are so nice, and deep heavy drums accompanied by long drawn out bass hits make me happy.

I started following Witch Mountain at the end of '99 when they were first starting up around Portland. I saw them many times and absolutely looked forward to their shows, but they slowed down several years back and I assumed broken up. While the last few shows were fantastic, I did get the impression they were more less going through the motions. I saw them earlier this year opening for Uli Jon Roth and would definitely say they were doing more then going through the motions. Uta has breathed new life into this band and this collection shows it.

The first time I listened to it was on my commute home and it was the first time I can honestly say I didn't mind I-84 being backed up.

If you were looking forward to the new Black Sabbath, do yourself a favor and get a copy of this as well. You will be guaranteed hours of listening enjoyment between the two.
