Présentation de l'éditeur

Kingsley Pretorius, a South African dot-com-billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist is a man with a plan: to retire on Mars. When the thirty-year-old starts his own space program, he's laughed at and dismissed as a pipe-dreamer. Kingsley believes he can make access to space cheaper, and is willing to take on that challenge against all odds. His lofty ideas put him in the cross-hairs of massive corporations that are hell-bent on protecting their turf as well as rival eccentric billionaires with cosmic dreams of their own. He must win an uphill battle against corporate espionage, hostile takeovers, corrupt politicians, and his own playboy lifestyle if he can ever make Space For Sale.

Book 1 of 3. To be followed by Moon For Sale in 2014.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Best 'modern' setting book I've read. 14 janvier 2014

I especially loved how the whole book takes place in the 'now', as it were, and continues into the very near future so it's not a huge stretch. The story was really intriguing in my opinion, as well, As I've been interested in astronomy and all related fields, and I'm pretty decent at math and engineering, I actually enjoyed the portions of the book that delved into the science behind the technology, both the future ones and the details on the old/current implements. The cameos from the celebrities provided a good bit of comedic relief but also served as valuable character foils.

The only drawback is that sometimes the transitions between time schemes and topics is a little abrupt; one page will be about the plot and then the next 2 paragraphs (but like, 5 pages) will be exposition on science. They were good, but I just didn't enjoy the transitions too much; the story was very gripping though.

All in all, if you're somewhat science-y inclined, and astronomy/space happens to be included in that inclination, and you like reading and reminiscing about doing random drugs in Vegas also, give this a read. I'm pretty stoked for the next one.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Enjoyable read 9 janvier 2014

I enjoyed this book, it was a decent story and quite funny at times, although the author could use the services of a professional editor to give it that final polish, the minor typos/grammatical errors do not overly take away from the story itself.

Space for Sale is the story of a South African born billionaire named Kingsley Pretorius, who got rich selling a dot com and rolled that profit into an electric car company, a rocket company, a solar energy company, and has plans for a hyperloop (sound familiar?). Space for Sale is the first book in the Rocket Man Series trilogy, to be followed by Moon for Sale in 2014.

At the beginning of the story, Kingsley is a man about to fail miserably at almost everything. His rockets keep blowing up, his cars are being sanctioned due to pressure from big oil, his personal life is a wreck, and he is carrying some serious baggage from his childhood, but as the story develops he becomes a more centered and mature person. At the start of the story I actually found the main character to be interesting but pretty unlikable, but as the character changed, my thoughts about him changed as well. The author did a decent job of creating situations that would force the protagonist to develop into a better person. Aside from the main character, who is an obvious homage to Elon Musk, many other celebrities make an appearance in this book, including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Richard Branson, Scarlett Johansson, and others, plus a few hilarious cameos with John Travolta.

There must have been a great deal of time spent on the research for this book; I actually feel like I received an education on the history of manned space exploration from this book. With this book, I think Jeff Pollard has done for space nerds what Ernest Cline did for 80's pop culture geeks with Ready Player One. There are tons of nerd culture references scattered throughout the book, and looking for these little Easter Eggs became a meta game for me.

There were some pretty memorable passages in the book too, and I thought Kingsley's epiphany speech to Caroline was one of the hardest hitting pieces of self reflection I've ever read.

All in all, I thought this was a really enjoyable read, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in science fiction, space history, Elon Musk, pop/nerd culture, etc.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 a genuinely good story, I enjoyed the Space Station details 27 janvier 2014

I enjoyed the character of K as well as several of the "guest stars" and thought it was a very good story. While the structure of the book lacked some fluidity, I personally liked the tech and the history lessons behind it. Unfortunately, they did not further the story so much as sideline it at times. I imagine the audience for this is people whose curiousity matches their appetite for reading. I've recommended this to a couple of friends but know others who would be put off by the structure not the story so if you're interested in space and technology and hopeful of the future, give it a read. If you enjoy it, then you're welcome. If not, my bad. I like to encourage authors and this is one I'll expect more from in his next book (which I WILL be reading).

A thinly disguised and I mean very thinly disguised story about Elon Musk and Space Technologies, better known as SpaceX. It has both past and future situations, but I'm taking one star away for the unnecessary vulgarity.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters had personality, the language was witty, and things played well off one another. I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel.
