An explosive and shocking biography of Jose Mourinho - revealing the dark side of 'the special one'. When Jose Mourinho announced his return to English football, it sparked celebrations from fans and press alike. As one of the most charismatic figures in the game, his reappearance could surely only be a good thing...But is there a darker side to the Mourinho? A mischievous, scheming, even tyrannical quality to the man beneath the veneer of charm? As part of El Pais, Diego Torres is one of the premier investigative journalists in Spanish football, and in this explosive biography of 'the special one' he uncovers secrets and lies that will change the way we see Mourinho. From dodgy dealings to assassinations of players both outside and within his own team, and other shocking revelations, Prepare To Lose reveals Mourinho as a man far removed from the hero so many people consider him to be.

This book is a mess. The author has a clear thesis-- that Mourinho somehow "ruined" Madrid. The problem is that evidence keeps getting in the way, so he has to resort to increasingly desperate excuses to justify his argument. Mourinho came to Madrid in 2010-11. Before that, they hadn't won the league in two years, hadn't advanced past the Champions League round of 16 in 6 years, and hadn't been in the Copa del Rey final in 6 years (and hadn't won it in almost 20). Mourinho's first year, they won the Copa del Rey and got to the Champions League semifinals. The next year, they won the league. His last year, they were Copa del Rey runners up. They were Champions League semifinalists every year he was there.

There were allegations that he was unfair with players (Torres seems to think that Ozil and, laughably, Kaka should have been in the side every game, while Fabio Coentrao and, even more laughably, Di Maria were only ever in the team because they shared an agent with Mourinho). Events have largely vindicated Mourinho. Ozil was sold to Arsenal (incidentally, not by Mourinho) and has struggled to light up England. Meanwhile, Di Maria was sold to Man United for almost a 100% profit after a dominant World Cup. Because clearly only Mourinho would be willing to pay huge money for him.

It was the same with the results. Any time Real won, it was because the players went rogue and didn't listen to Mourinho, or because Barcelona (or whoever happened to be their opponent) didn't play up to their usual standard. Any time Real lost, it was because Mourinho's team selection and tactics were stifling them. When Torres inconveniently has to cite facts, they end up laughably contradicting his case. According to him, Madrid struggled to break down deep-seated teams... except that in Mourinho's second season, Real won the league with a record 100 points, a record 121 goals scored, and a record goal difference of 89. They were a penalty shootout against a very strong Bayern team from making the Champions League final. If Real managed over 3 goals a game playing exceptionally defensively, what does Torres imagine they would've done if he'd "let them attack"? Six goals a game? The delusion is priceless.

Equally, his personnel decisions ended up being vindicated in hindsight as well. A big deal was made of Mourinho dropping the legendary captain and keeper Iker Casillas. What goes unmentioned is that Casillas wasn't playing well at all. He stunk for Real that season, and he stunk for Spain at the 2014 World Cup. When Carlo Ancelotti replaced Mourinho... Diego Lopez kept his place in the team.

While everyone knows that Mourinho isn't perfect and has a difficult personality that, over time, can grind on players and management, his results speak for themselves. And his results at Real spoke for themselves just as well as his results at Porto, at Chelsea (both times), and at Inter (Torres waves away his Champions League win for Inter as "lucky", despite the fact that Inter had a squad that was significantly weaker than Barcelona, Bayern, Chelsea, and pretty much any serious Champions League rival). All of this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of things wrong with this book. Torres could've written an evenhanded story about the difficulties of Mourinho's personality. Instead, he wrote a delusional fantasy that has no bearing on reality. What a joke.

HASH(0xa10aabb8) étoiles sur 5 Fact or Fiction? 20 janvier 2015

Format: Broché
How much of this book is true? I don't know. Does Diego Torres have some secret sources inside of Real Madrid that gave him information that nobody else has? I don't know that either. Could this picture of Jose Mourinho be true? You will have to decide for yourself.

Diego Torres writes about events that happened inside of the Real Madrid locker room that have never been talked about. He talks about a Jose Mourinho that nobody has seen. He tells how Jose Mourinho would use mind games to try to enhance his own image, while tarnishing his players. He says that Jose Mourinho would favor the players that had Jorge Mendes as an agent. He says that everything was manipulated so that Jose Mourinho would come out looking good no matter how badly he was at couching Real Madrid. There are so many interesting stories in this book about what went on during the time Jose Mourinho was at Real Madrid, I just wonder which ones are true and what is fiction. Did Diego Torres make up some of the stories, or was he fed misinformation by his moles? Or maybe it's all true.

If you check out the opinions that have come out across the internet about this book, it seems that the majority of people think that Diego Torres has an ax to grind. Most people take this book as a work of fiction with a few facts thrown in for good measure, but if they are wrong, and Diego is telling the whole truth about Jose Mourinho, then he is one crazy SOB. We will have to see what comes out from his time at Chelsea.

How can I rate this book? I'm not sure how much to believe. Do I rate it as an expose or as a novel? I think that I will give it 3 Stars out of 5.

If you follow football (soccer), especially the European leagues, then you probably like to read this, just so that you can discuss it with your friends. If you couldn't care less, then just move on, because you won't have any interest.

I received a Digital Review Copy from the publisher.

Did Jose Mourinho really conspire to lose a second leg tie in the Champions League against Barcelona to blame it on the referee? Was he an explicit booster for his agent Jorge Mendes's business through his Real transfer dealings? Did Mourinho really break down when he wasn't given the United job? How did the Real players really behave in the dressing room? And what about the curious case of Fabio Coentrao?

Answers are here given by Diego Torres, written in an entertaining and salacious style. If it is 80% true, this is the best book written on Jose Mourinho. But there are serious doubts on the veracity of this account, as well as the impartiality of Diego Torres. In the absence of further information it is impossible to know who is telling the truth and who is lying, but I do have serious doubts on the tale foretold. What manager would give up a tie with just a two-goal deficit against your arch-rivals?

Very, very interesting reading, only minus is that Mourinho himself hasn't been given chance to comment on the discussed matters.

Absolute vilification of Mourinho, most of it baseless. Tries to potray mourinho as the man who screwed Real Madrid and was meant for everything bad. Also laments about stuff which are not true like saying Di Maria was a waste of a player and that no one was ready to buy for 30 mil Euros, stuff proved wrong in 2014(the book published in 2k12).
