Be advised, however, that several of the 20 chapter/articles are duplicates -- maybe as many as six. Mia Ham, Damn Yankee, Fidrych, Runners, Ali, and the Deep Divers. All great stories, and perhaps worth reading twice?
To cite just one outstanding example from this collection: If your eyes don't get watery when you read the story "Higher Education," about the unexpected black basketball coach at the small Mennonite school, you must lack a heart.
I have worked in the sports department of a major newspaper and have rubbed elbows with prominent sports journalists. But Gary Smith is my favorite writer of sports stories. I give this book my highest recommendation.
The famous - Tiger Woods, Mia Hamm, and Andre Agassi revealed from the inside out. Muhammad Ali's career as seen through the eyes of his entourage.
The tragic - the death spiral of the "once weres" (Mark Fidrych) and the "never beens". Where does the athlete go after the crowds have left and the last lights are out.
The little stories - poor folk, small towns, poverty, strong people with big hearts.
This is a book about people - who also play sports.
