Présentation de l'éditeur

CODENAME: CHANDLER

After having her cover blown and risking everything to stop a nuclear Armageddon, covert operative Chandler figured she might have been shown some appreciation for the sacrifices she made. Instead, the very organization that trained her locks up Chandler's sister, Fleming, for treason, intent on extracting every last scrap of information from her broken body and mind.

SPREE

Despite impossible odds, Chandler launches a desperate rescue mission, recruiting old allies (Jack Daniels and Harry McGlade, from Konrath's novel Whiskey Sour), and new ones (Val Ryker and David Lund from Peterson's Pushed Too Far, and Tequila Abernathy from Konrath's Shot of Tequila) to break into a black site--an ultrasecret military prison on US soil where no one gets out alive. But standing in her way is a squad of deadly psychopaths and a rogue government agency determined to destabilize the nation--and conquer the world.

Buckle up. It's going to be one hell of a ride...

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Another fast-paced exciting read by these two authors. 15 novembre 2012

It will never be said that Konrath's novels are boring. I'll tell you that. From the second you start reading this book it's knock down, drag out action. Spree starts exactly where Flee left off. I loved Flee. Spree was just as good.

I don't want to go into too much detail in case some haven't yet read any of the Chandler series. Basically, Chandler is a super secret spy working for a government agency that almost no one knows exists. She needs to save one of her 3 remaining sisters from a black site. Complications arise as they always do for her and the action is full tilt ahead.

Love Chandler, love that she's like a superhero. She has to be because the kind of butt whooping she takes in most scenes she has to be. No normal person could go through all of what she does. Still, it's awesome and fast paced and exciting to read through.

I think my one complaint is all the weapons talk. There were so many different guns and knifes I had no idea what was going on. I'd have had to stop every few pages to look up what they were talking about. So... for me that was a little bit of a downside. AR-7, Ghost Hawk knives... it was all over my head. I got the 9MM reference though.

I love the characters. I love the new characters that were introduced. I had wanted to read Ann Voss Peterson's Pushed Too Far before reading this one but the time constraints were a lit tricky to work out. I'll definitely be going back to read that though. I believe a lot of characters in this were also in that novel.

I'm very excited for Three, the next (and maybe even the last) novel in the Chandler series.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 I Just couldn't... 7 février 2013

Normally, I love books like this. Strong female characters. Guns and things that go boom. Thrill-a-minute popcorn reads that run at breakneck speed.

Oddly, I just couldn't get into this. I liked Chandler and Fleming, but loved Hammett. I liked Tequila. I liked the fact that the author threw in an old favorite in Jack Daniels. But for some reason, the plot left me cold.

Part of the problem may be that this is one in a series - a series I haven't read before. That doesn't usually stop me from enjoying a book. Normally, I can start in the middle of a series and then I get excited and go back and read all the others in the series. This one didn't really work as a standalone. It took about 75 pages to catch my attention. Up until then, I sort of felt like everyone else was already invested in characters I knew nothing about. Almost no time is spent letting us know who these women are and why we should care about them.

Aside from the lack of back story for those of us new to the series, I would say that the book is well written, but I found there was only one character (Hammett) that I was remotely interested in and it really wasn't enough to sustain me.

Love the authors, but this one left me kind of cold.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Not as good as the first two books 8 décembre 2012

I absolutely loved the first two books of this series and I pre-ordered this one so I would get it right away. I've also read the Jack Daniels books and Pushed Too Far. But, this book was just ok. I love this series because the main character is so good, but she spends a good chunk of this book being bested by a lot of people. And the absolute worst is how she spends so much time mooning over some guy who she apparently loves after knowing for less than a day, and everyone can see they are meant to be together. He also feels this way after one night together. I was disappointed and I hope the next book will have a return of the profeesional bad a$$ I expect from Chandler.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 NON-STOP ACTION! 28 novembre 2012

If you're looking for an action-adventure that's heavy on the action, I'd recommend SPREE as something that won't disappoint! It's go, go, go from start to finish.

I did NOT read the first book in this series, Flee (Chandler Series), so it took me a chapter or two to figure things out, but it does work well as a stand-alone novel. I'd probably say reading FLEE first would probably make the characters easier to grasp at first and probably explain more of the background. It's not an absolute necessity, but if you're going to read SPREE, you might as well splurge and pick up FREE while you're at it.

Well written, but as you'd expect, the basic plot is fairly simplistic and, I'd say, secondary to the pulse-pounding action! In short, if you're in search of great literature, this isn't it, but if you simply want exciting kick-you-know-what action featuring feisty female triplets using martial arts, high-tech weaponry, and James Bond gadgetry, you'll enjoy this book. A few bits might be rather far-fetched from a laws-of-physics standpoint, but it's too much fun to really be concerned with such details. 450 pages of page-turning action was hard to put down. I just had to see what was going to happen next!

Well-detailed, realistic and detailed background setting at the old Badger Ammo plant in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Having been there myself (and marveling at it's immensity), it was easy to imagine the story as it was set.

Even a bit of, dare we say it, "romance" thrown in. Moderate profanity, large body count, somewhat graphic violence, suggestive dialogue and some "naughty" bits make the book for more mature audiences. Definitely "R" rated. If you blush easily or are squemish, you might want to take a pass.

Again, it's not great "literature", but it is GREAT FUN! For the genre, I'd give FIVE STARS to SPREE and would definitely consider reading the prequel FREE and the yet-to-come third book, THREE.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A Wild, Crazy, Funny Thriller 14 novembre 2012

"Spree" is the fifth in the Codename: Chandler series. Although I've not read the previous novels, I chose to read "Spree" because I like Konrath's Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thriller series: Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Fuzzy Navel, Cherry Bomb, and Shaken.

This novel should not be taken seriously. It is a crazy, way over the top thriller, with all action and virtually no character development. It's fun to read because you just can't believe the outrageous things that happen in one chapter, then find that the next chapter outdoes it. The action is so ludicrous, it's funny and sometimes hilarious. There are a few sex scenes, probably written by coauthor Ann Voss Peterson, a Harlequin romance novelist.

This is an excellent book for ADD people. There are so many chapters that they're not numbered and some are as short as three paragraphs. Each chapter is entitled with the subject character making it easy to follow. Each chapter leaves you hanging. It's a real page-turner. Even with 461 pages, "Spree" is a quick read.

The story revolves around sisters Chandler, Fleming and Hammett. They had four other sisters, Ludlum, Clancy, LeCarre and Follett, now deceased. Somehow, these women are all identical twins. One is a psychopath, one is a sociopath, and one is actually soft-hearted. Now, you see why you can't take this book seriously?

Hammett is the evil twin, a psychopath who travels the world killing people. She has no compunctions about committing murder, but is very fond and protective of animals, particularly dogs, cats, horses and domesticated Siberian foxes. If Hammett didn't have to travel for her job, "[s]he could easily imagine having a few foxes. And a doggie and a horsie."

Fleming, the most normal of the sisters, is attracted to a mercenary named Tequila. Watching him welding iron, Fleming thinks: "Though she'd never admit it to anyone, [she]Fleming had always had the hots for Darth Vader, and seeing Tequila in that black welding mask made her want to crawl across the pinecone-strewn lawn and violate him in delicious ways."

The sisters are highly trained spies, similar to Bond without the sophistication. Weapons include all variety of knives; every type of gun; martial arts type kicking while riding a galloping horse; razor blades; a stone-crushing machine; explosives; fire; salt and pepper used to blind an opponent; and crying. At one point Chandler and Hammett have a knife fight while balancing on high voltage wires. Transportation includes horses, hot air balloons and ATVs.

The scenes are inventive. Chandler saves herself from drowning in a reservoir by tying her belt, made of fifty feet of braided paracord, to a salamander that she threw to shore, wrapping it around a post.

If you like wild, crazy action scenes, "Spree" is a fun read. Just don't expect realism or anything serious.
