Présentation de l'éditeur

Twenty-one-year-old Elaina Ruiz has only just begun college when she meets Raul Vega for the first time. Recognizing his ruthless intensity for what it is, she doesn't correct him when he assumes she is an eighteen-year-old freshman.
Raul Vega has never met a woman he couldn't do without. Until he meets Elaina Ruiz and knows she has to belong to him--even if it means waiting for her to grow up.
Excerpt:
Elaina  stood leaning slightly against the wall, feeling completely free and easy and enjoying the conversation around her and the slight buzz that half a glass of champagne had induced.
A small, happy smile on her face, she glanced across the room and her eyes tangled with the dark, intent stare of Raul Vega. Butterflies hit her stomach, and she actually felt her knees get weak. His gaze never left hers as he made his way across the room to where she was standing. She was held enthralled as she watched him approach and briefly acknowledge the people around her, before he simply reached out a hand to her and said, "Come."
Her blush deepening, she didn't think to refuse him and put her hand in his, murmuring, "Excuse me," to her circle of new friends.Turning back the way he came, he pulled her with him into the privacy of the study. He shut the door, leaned back against it and crossed his arms over his chest.
She turned in a half circle to face him, her heart beating triple time as he stood silently observing her. She couldn't stop the trembling in her fingers, and the champagne glass wobbled precariously.
His eyes narrowed in on it. "You think you should be drinking that?"
She already had enough alcohol running through her system on an empty stomach, and the effort it was taking to hold the liquid still in the glass suddenly seemed more than her nerves could handle. She reached over and set it down on a side table. "Probably not," she agreed mildly.
He spoke, his voice rough but controlled, "You know sweetheart, I get that you're young. Too young for me. But I think you're old enough to know what you're doing to me." The look he gave her was speculative, thoughtful. "Are you doing it on purpose?"
The question caught her off guard and her breath snarled in her throat. "No."
He continued as if she hadn't answered, his voice turning feral, "I don't think it's escaped your notice that I'm jealous of Trevor. And I think you're using it against me."
She expelled a shallow pant of air. His disclosure sent an intoxicating blend of heady power and beguiling need through her veins. Her denial came quickly, "No, I'm not. I--"
"You need to have mercy on me, baby," his tone turned slightly threatening, "before I snap."
He took a step away from the door and her voice unfroze. "I've told you before, I'm not interested in him that way. I'm not going to start something with him, he kissed me, yeah, but--"
He came to a halt, his expression changing to lines of fury, steel hitting his spine. "He kissed you?"
Elaina slammed her eyes closed as she realized what she had inadvertently revealed. Stupid. Her lashes came up slowly to find his eyes blazing down at her and his nostrils flaring. The blood slammed through her veins and heat stroked through her body. What was it about this man?
"He touched your lips?"
"Jesus Christ, Raul--"
His hands came up and gripped her forearms in a hold that restrained her. "That's not acceptable."

Elaina Ruiz has spent the last 3 years taking care of her ailing mother until her death, this is when Elaina starts college. Exhausted she comes to visit her aunt where she meets Raul Vega a dominant man who immediately desires her. But as she only is a freshman he believes her to be only 18 and not 21, therefore too young for him. But still reason is not enough to keep him from staking his claim and getting very angry when a guy her age, Trevor flirts with her. Elaina is captured by the dark 30 year old man, but is also very afraid of his possessiveness and macho attitude so she hides her real age to protect herself. But when he finds out that she is old enough for him and a virgin there is no way out anymore for any of them.

93 pages this is how long it takes Mrs. Lynda Chase to tell this story. And I have to admit I was happy that is wasn't much longer. I got the impression that she likes to describe. Especially the description of the two main characters seems unnatural. Then the characters themselves: I understand her motivations to avoid him but I don't understand him at all. There is no insight in his past, nor in his present... so he lacked in depth and after thinking about it: she as well because I read about her and her fears but I didn't feel anything.

I have no problems with alpha males only when I don't feel any sympathy or even hate towards any character... well than I have a problem. Also I like to read sometimes an erotic tale period but then I need something hot and a bit more special then here. And the end was for me just too much happy end.

I have to admit that I am not sure if I'll try some other work of this author because the more I think about this book the less I enjoyed it.

You will either love or hate this hero; he's that polarizing. I've read several of Lynda Chance's heroes, and I have to say that Raul may just be the most outrageous, over the top, and overbearing of the lot. Some of the things he says to Elaina were almost cringe-worthy. For instance, when he asks if she's still a virgin, does she still have her "cherry," I had to wince at that. The dude was totally not smooth. Some of the things he says and the way he thinks about the heroine are chauvinistic and even antiquated. He takes traditional male to a whole new level. This might rub any reader the wrong way, and it definitely infuriates and scares Elaina most of the time.

I have to say that Raul grew on me. Yes, he is OTT and overbearing, even going so far as to use intimidation tactics on the heroine, and judge me if you want, but I was digging the guy. He is that brooding hero I love, somewhat cold and arrogant and even lacking in any smooth social skills. He's just there, right in your face, daring you to like a man that raw and that masculine. Raul's the kind of hero who maybe I really should think is a little creepy and scary, but instead I found his intensity and overwhelming masculinity so very attractive. I wanted to eat Raul up with a spoon, jealous temper, dominating attitude and all.

I also enjoyed the older man/younger woman slant to the story. Although Elaina is 21 and Raul 30 when they first meet, and while that's not necessarily a huge age difference (for this theme, I usually prefer about a 15-year age difference), there was still this sexy forbidden feeling to his desire for her. He mistakenly thinks she's still a teen-ager (18) and too young for him. I loved Raul wanting her and fighting this attraction. He was consumed with thoughts of her and constantly wondered how he was going to hold off until she was a little older and had lived a bit more. So when he finds out her real age, he's off the leash. No other way to describe it. He was barely under control.

Overall, I enjoyed this story and loved this hero. While I do feel the heroine seemed immature at times and I would have liked her to be assertive in a more grown-up way, Raul is who made the story for me. At 101 kindle pages, this story gave me the non-PC, jerk hero I tend to fall for. Just be warned that Raul is no modern-day Prince Charming; you may half expect him to do a Tarzan yell at any given moment. Raul is about as smooth as sandpaper and is more like a knuckle-dragging alpha. He's jealous, tempermental, domineering, and to me, he was very sexy.

Staking His Claim did not work for me, my only complaint is the use of fear. I have noticed a subtle pattern of LC using the combination of sexual excitement and fear to characterize the Alpha male's influence over his romantic interest. Fear of any kind in a relationship is not romantic, it means the parties involved are not operating on an equal playing field. The ultimate Alpha male driven stories are the ones where the h knows she is the only one that can make her Tiger purr. She thrills in the fact that he is a man's man, and when needed he ferociously protects what is his, and no matter how other ladies tempt him he only wants her and he is not ashamed to show it. That is where the sexual excitement comes from between the H/h, she's got this tiger by the tail and only she is allowed to ride him. Fear has nothing to do with it, if it does they should not be together. SHC had a lot of fear going on, from the moment Elaina meets Raul she feels some type of fear. She let him believe a lie due to fear, her character was childish and did not deserve an Alpha male, she was too weak. Raul was a jerk, he intimidated Elaina from the beginning when he thought she was a teenager. His constant use of the word baby became irritating. I wanted Elania to challange him more, she was not a worthy recipient of his cave man tactics. I'm not giving up on this author because I know she can write the type of Alpha stories I love to read, unfortunately SHC is not one of them.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Steamy short story where a vulnerable heroine falls for an alpha 4 juillet 2012

Hmmm...this story was okay. The h(Elaina)is young, naive, recently new to town and living with her aunt and uncle. She is just finishing her first semester and overwhelmed. Her mother just recently died from breast cancer a few months ago and she dedicated her life in taking of her mother until she passed.

And who does she meet on her first night at her aunt's house? Why none other than her uncle's good friend, Raul Vega. Did I forget to mention he's a macho man, an alpha-hole and extremely possessive. And condescending, his favorite term to call the heroine, "little girl".

The heroine felt nervous to tell the Hero her true age and lets him think she's a teen. She must have felt some trepidation to keep up this lie. But don't worry, the Hero is a master albeit, stilted seducer. He manipulates the heroine into giving into him.

It was slightly Diana Palmer-esque except much more erotic.

Do I believe the love story? Eh, not really. I think the girl was vulnerable at the tie and he used it for his advantage. But it was not a horrible story. And the price was fitting.
