An absolutely incredible wealth of funk knowledge and technique distilled into one volume. 10 avril 2010

I received this book at 9:00 a.m. this morning and have devoured it and the accompanying cd in one sitting. It is fantastic. This book is obviously written for drummers and Moore's treatment, interpretation, and reverence of Funk-Drumming's Holy Trinity: Clyde, Jabo, and Zigaboo is phenomenal. I'm a diehard fan of James Brown, especially Clyde Stubblefield's work, and Moore actually showed me a few things for working up some of Clyde's feels that I never thought of. The cd that comes with the book contains EVERY example in the book (every main groove, every variation, everything!) 603 in all and they all sound clean and crisp. This is a quality learning tool for honing your funk-drumming craft, it is easily up there with ZORO's Commandments of R&B Drumming and The Commandments of Early R&B Drumming (also recommended). What has really impressed me is that Moore isn't faking. He's not transmitting this information in a trite, textbook-style fashion, he loves this music and these players and you can tell by the care that has gone into this book and cd. This book is for anyone that wants to gain, or embellish upon, a deep understanding of Funk Drumming and doesn't mind doing the work that comes along with that, because this book is mainly set up to make you capable of all these thing and more, so long as you do the work necessitated. A fantastic, well-researched, lovingly-assembled homage to, and example of, premiere Funky Drumming.

Among the greatest drum books ever written 9 juin 2011

That Stanton Moore is a nasty drummer is inarguable; that he is a scholar of the instrument is now clear as well. Others have written histories of funk and its rhythm sections, but Moore has written the first non-linear one. That is to say Moore doesn't just say "Drummer X played this beat" and write it down, he demonstrates that Drummer X was influenced by the groove Drummer W had played before him and then goes on to demonstrate how both W and X influenced Y. Truly great. Moreover, Moore encourages the student to experiment with the material and offers so of his own experimentations as examples. The accompanying audio CD is also excellent; I've actually got it on my ipod and listen to it on the way to gigs sometimes to get fired up. nice job Stanton!

Better than take it to the streets! 24 décembre 2010
Par ronisize15 - Publié sur Amazon.com
I loved Take it to the streets. It helped me develop as a drummer but this book trumps it. Stanton Moore is beyond a drummer and just a great spokesmen for funk music. The respect he shows for the creators is great and the amount of grooves for you to learn is amazing. He does a great job of breaking it down and really dissects it so it's easy for the learner to understand. You must understand sixteenth note and triplet rhythms. This is not for a beginner drummer.

Very well executed 9 mai 2014

I got the book so I could improve my Funk and second line funk groove for the blues jam at Ziggies in Denver. I no longer go there because the Sociopathic Narcicistic Bullies have taken the jam over, but I ordered the book originally for this point.
Stanton gives a great background of James Brown, Zigaboo grooves and has excellent transcriptions and demos of these grooves.
Both single handed funk grooves as well as two handed swung sixteenth note funk are covered.
His style is very accessible and you will learn a lot just by watching him play (you need to get the DVD as well).
The book has several playalongs, which are a great excercise.
You have to like Stanton's egoless delivery in the DVD. If only people at blues jams were more talented like that and less sociopathic.
A must-have! 24 décembre 2013

This book will stand the test of time for anyone seeking an encyclopedic foundation of funk and groove drumming. Stanton lays out the origins of funk drumming, starting with James Brown's drummers, through Zigaboo Modeliste and James Black, and continuing through David Garibaldi, Bernard Purdie, and many others. Throughout, he encourages readers to expand on the groove vocabulary they've aquired in order to make their playing more creative and personal.

The bonus data-cd includes Stanton demonstrating every single rhythm in the book, well over 500 in all. Super-highly recommended.
