The way all soundtracks should be done 26 avril 2012
Par ebinrock - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
This is an absolutely beautiful score written and composed by Jerry Goldsmith and his son Joel Goldsmith. (Time constraints kept Jerry from scoring the whole thing.) I'm glad this is a COMPLETE score to the film - the way all soundtrack CD's ought to be done. There was some really poignant and powerful musical cues during some pivotal scenes, such as "Not Again" and "Flight of the Phoenix", that should have been included on the original 1996 CD, but weren't. I'm a little disappointed that source music such as "Ooby Dooby" by Roy Orbison and "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf are not included here, otherwise I could have ditched my original 1996 release. GNP Crescendo told me in an email that the licensing costs would have upped the price, but I don't care. I also would have liked to have the Berlioz piece Picard listens to in his quarters, as well as the source music played in the holodeck nightclub scene. Oh well. Still an excellent, comprehensive CD. Before ever buying a soundtrack CD (especially one with a traditional orchestral score), check first with Film Score Monthly [...] and Screen Archives Entertainment [...], as they're the ones who continually release exclusive complete score CD's like this one.

Assimilation Complete 8 mai 2012

When I received, and read, and listened to, and read some more (details below) with the current complete version of the score soundtrack to Star Trek [8]: First Contact, I had to re-evaluate and drop my previous review of the old soundtrack, which I posted only a few weeks before this new edition was released.

The score itself is a classic, a favorite of many Trekkers and Goldsmith fans, so I almost don't have to go into detail. This does have the complete score. (some of it done with the help of son Joel Goldsmith, a good composer in his own right.) Sure, there is none of the pop/source music this time, but who really needs it? (Sure, I'll miss Steppenwolf, but that's what greatest hits albums and MP3s n' such are for.) The album also has three alternate cues, including a nice "clean" version of the stirring main title, with only the subtlest of differences, and no harsh interrupting lead-in to the Borg flashback-nightmare intro. (Except for a very muted version of the opening Borg note.)

The liner notes for this are rather unusual. They are very in-depth and fascinating, analyzing composer Goldsmith's continuing thru-line and patterns with all of his Trek movie scores, how this movie uses themes and patterns from classic crew movies 1 and even 5, and some brief mentions of how these themes continue into the rest of the TNG movies. The TMP/TNG march, the Trek V quest motive, the first contact theme, and themes for the Borg, the Klingons and the Vulcans are all discussed. . . . . And then it stops dead, prompting you to go to the GNP Crescendo website to get the rest of the story, namely, the actual track-by-track analysis. Easy enough to get to right now, but I wonder how if those extra notes will still be up on the web next year or so.....

How much of a limited edition is this album? -- 'Tis hard to tell yet ; only time and avaliability and sellers' (scalpers'?) prices will tell.....

In its present form as a limited edition release this still remains 21 avril 2012

Jerry Goldsmith's finest music score of the Next Generation feature films but we must wait until his last two entries (Insurrection and Nemesis) are released in the
same manner to see if my contention holds true.
This score is certainly his third best for the Star Trek films (I wish he'd done all of them) and is certainly worth purchasing if you're a fan of the composer as I
am and this album contains all of the underscore provided by the veteran composer and his son Joel Goldsmith. It makes for an interesting as well as an enjoyable listen as one can gauge the compositional talents of the son with that of the father
and is the only time they worked together on a film to this degree.
The Main Title is an excellent and noble piece played beautifully by French horns and is an all-new composition which marks the first time Goldsmith doesn't utilize his more famous fanfare from the first film (its not heard until the end) and he would create new themes for his final two Trek scores as well. The original album was a respectful representation of the score but marred badly by the inclusion of two songs and an omission of several outstanding cues all of which is corrected on this release.
The main highlight is the "Flight of the Phoenix" which was composed by his son and is his best contribution to the score and I thought it was written by Goldsmith
himself that's how good it is. I've always said that many of Goldsmith's scores need
to be released in complete form so one can truly appreciate how Goldsmith develops
his musical ideas and this album proves this point even further.
As the composer was still working on his great score to "The Ghost and the Darkness" at the time (talk about another score that should be released complete!)
he needed to help to finish "First Contact" and called upon his son and supplied him with which scenes to score. Even though his son supplied some very good music here I wish Goldsmith were given more time to write the complete score solely on his
own as I believe the music would have been even greater---and Goldsmith made no sec-
ret of the fact that he enjoyed scoring the "Star Trek" films.
But don't misunderstand, this is still an exceedingly fine musical score worth having.
The Complete Experience 2 avril 2013

Edit: As there seems to be some confusion, I just want to distinctly clarify that I am reviewing the Limited Edition version of this film's score, which has around 30 tracks, as opposed to the original soundtrack which has 13 tracks.

I have waited a long time for this product, and only recently thought to try and look for it again. I'm so glad I did.

The original soundtrack had some great selections, but it was missing key elements of this film's excellent score. A lot of the additional content is from the moodier, darker scenes in which the music really is there to add suspense and doesn't necessary work as a standalone piece that's incredibly enjoyable to listen to, but big fans of the film will appreciate its inclusion.

However, there are a few key moments in the film that never made it into the original soundtrack that are included in here. The subtle introduction of the new Enterprise along with the titular theme music is only 20 or so seconds long, but it's an important musical element that was missing. We also get the full version of the scene in which the crew listen to the Borg attack on the fleet, which provides some great suspenseful introduction to the battle when the Enterprise joins.

Two more quick moments that I thought were unforgivably left out of the original soundtrack are when the escape pods evacuate the Enterprise, and when the Phoenix finally achieves warp. These two moments in the film have musical cues that break the dark and depressing mood of those overall scenes with small moments of hope. The music appropriately reflects this mood, and now we have them included on the full score.

For fans of the film, this is a must buy. For fans of *only* the soundtrack, this is a most-likely-should buy. If you don't care all that much about the movie itself, this edition of the score is probably unnecessary for you, but you are cheating yourself out of the full experience.

Finally: I will recommend the purchase of any album that includes the famous Star Trek theme when mashed with the First Contact title theme. The End Credits track, despite the boring name, is one of my most played tracks and will forever remain a staple of my musical tastes.
My most favorite score 3 février 2013

Every since I saw this film back in the late 1990's it became one of my favorite Star Trek films.Including the music itself. My interpritation of what the score represents is how Jerry Goldsmith gives the notion of a better furture through his themes that he creates. To hear finally the whole score together is great.A lot of the original score was left out in the extended version that they had released about a decade ago, but this one has all of the music that I came to love.To anyone who is a Jerry Goldsmith fan, out of all of his scores for the franchise this is one to treasure and enjoy over and over agian.
