A Midwesterner and self-proclaimed nerd, Evan has been an avid reader most of her life, but five years ago got bit by the writing bug, and it quickly became her addiction, passion and therapy. When the voices in her head give it a rest, she can always be found with her e-reader in her hand. Some of her favorites include, Shayla Black, Jaci Burton, Madeline Sheehan and Jamie Mcguire. Evan finds a lot of her inspiration in music, so if you see her wearing her headphones you know she means business and is in the zone.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Too much of the secondary characters 16 mai 2014

I'm a sucker for a second chance romance, though they frequently frustrate me. I liked Luke and Bell, though their relationship was a bit rushed. From barely seeing each other for six years to falling in love in two weeks? Too much, too soon. Not to mention the insane amount of drama (all those hospital visits!) that went on during those two weeks. I did think Bell took on too much of the blame for the big secret she was carrying. Luke was a complete jerk to Bell six years prior, but he was furious that she didn't come to him because he would have helped her? Why on earth would she have believed that?

This book would be greatly served by some further editing. Not for typos/grammar, but to tighten up the story. There's a lot of unnecessary detail, telling instead of showing. And the secondary characters took up too much time. This is supposed to be Luke and Bell's story, all the other POV's were too distracting.

I must say that I have come across some seriously ridiculous romance books and ridiculous not in a good way. However I stumbled upon this story and took a chance! Boy, I am sooo glad I did!!!!
This was my first read by this author and I loved how I felt everything I mean EVERYTHING each person went thru and dealt with throughout this book.
The family bond was awesome and I loved how the parents stories were incorporated. I can't wait to read the 2nd book (which I just purchased!!)

This is NOT a cliffhanger (I hate cliffhangers!)
Great story you should definitely read it!!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Starting Over has a little bit of everything: passion (Luke is HOT), romance, and even some action! 27 avril 2014

Bellamy (Bell) has been in love with her brothers' best friend Luke since she was a little girl. Once she turned 18 she maps out a plan of seduction to get her man. After their one night of passion, Luke pushed Bell away, and severed ties for 6 long years. Now Bell is coming back to her hometown to see her family, mend fences, and reveal her secret to Luke. Luke hasn't forgotten about Bell (the best sex he has ever had) and some definite sparks fly when they are reunited.

I'm a sucker for brothers best friend romances. Friends that grew up together? Check. Friendly, down-to-earth, sweet guy? Check. Overprotective brothers? Check. Check. Sweet, young, and innocent girl? Check. They just draw me in and make me believe in happily ever afters. Luke is afraid of having a relationship with Bellamy because of the close relationship he has with her brothers. He is best friends with her twin brothers. His parents are best friends with her parents. There are some seriously tight bonds between these two families.

When Bellamy and Luke reunite the two find it hard to fight their attraction. Luke starts out being, well... an ass in the beginning. There's just no way around it. Once he gave in to his attraction he was really sweet and loving. Bellamy was hesitant because of his reaction to her in the past. I kept hoping that she would stand up for herself a bit with Luke and her family. In the end she did take a stand with her family and Luke.

I think the author did a nice job of giving a glimpse into two great families. Loving families without the baggage. Almost an idyllic setting that you find yourself wishing you had. Each of the characters had their own in-depth personalities and they all really cared and looked out for each other.

Starting Over has a little bit of everything: passion (Luke is HOT), romance, and even some action that will have you holding your breath at the end. Pick up Starting Over so that you can meet Bellamy and Luke!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Decent debut 10 juin 2014

Very brief synopsis - Bellamy comes home for a visit, and ends up reuniting with her first love. She has a big secret, though, that may get in the way of her and Luke's future. Belamy's twin brothers, her parents, her bff, Travis, and his boyfriend, her high school bff, Luke's brother, his parents, and all the town folk feel obliged to weigh in on Bellamy and Luke's odds. LOTS of folks wander in and out of this story.

What worked for me - The writing style is very readable. There is a charm to the story that I can't define, but it is there. I liked Bell and Luke, I liked all of the other miscellaneous characters(see above) and the banter was occasionally snarky and funny. There is a very real conflict, and I felt like the author gave it the right amount of gravitas, not dragging it out too much, but no insta-forgiveness, either. The smexy times were steamy, but I thought Bellamy and Luke moved a little too quickly to intimacy, especially given their history. The "you wanna come home with me?" came way too fast, and felt really off to me.

What didn't work as well - This is a debut novel. Seriously, I think it is an amazing accomplishment to put pen to paper and come out with a published work on the other side. I see Ms. Grace has a publisher, and after glancing at the website, I see editors mentioned. I have to wonder if the editor is for proofreading only? There were no mistakes, grammar wise, which is great. There was a lot of repetition, some very heavy handed foreshadowing (the oversized sweater, the accident when Bell was 10, for starters), and some really...well, quirky, for want of a better word, behaviors exhibited by the characters. Most notably, these folks nap a lot. Keep in mind, these are twenty somethings. Bless their hearts, they are going to sleep their lives away! They also greet each other repeatedly. For example, the whole gang splits up into groups to go to the local bar. When they get to the bar, at the same time, they are all "Hey,xxx, how are you?" What could have changed in the 10 minutes since they last saw each other? It was so freaking odd! I have to think these behaviors are maybe specific to where the author lives. Beyond that, the hospital visits got old quickly.

Despite these issues, I found a lot of good in Starting Over. The few issues are more or less cosmetic, and easily fixable as Ms. Grace gains experience. The author's overall style is compelling, and kept me turning the pages. I can't help but think Ms. Grace would benefit from maybe a few really honest beta readers who are willing to call her out a little bit. Or maybe a critique group, which is a tool many authors employ.

Bottom line - Time well spent. Ms. Grace has a raw talent that kept this reader engaged. I will be reading the rest of the series, and look forward to seeing her grow as an author. Good debut effort.

Possible Spoilers

This had the potential to be a great book. Instead to was overly long, had way to many (needless) characters, crappy suspense, and a predictable storyline.

The over use of 'mommy' and 'daddy' by the heroin was massively annoying to the point I wanted to throw my phone across the room. Every time she spoke to her parents she used these terms.

There is an inconsistency in how she thinks about her childhood. Part of the time she says that she was always pushed away and the other half she says that her brother was always with her watching out for her. Additionally the brothers personalities lack consistency.

But my biggest problem with the book is that the author seems to have tried to cram five books into one. It was just too much. If you want to write a book about old flings getting back together then write about that. If you want to write about a scared woman being stalked and her boyfriend protecting her than write about it. If you want to write about a woman's emotional recovery thanks in part to her gay best friend and his boyfriend than write about it. Dont shove them all together in a single book!!!
