Présentation de l'éditeur

Tess Burgess, expert in medieval warfare, is building siege engines in France, while running a sting operation against collectors of stolen artifacts. She finds these collectors through her ex-boyfriend, Peter Gagné, heir to an oil fortune.

Obsessed with the collapse of civilization, Peter's latest grandiose scheme is a simulated war, like a giant paintball match for billionaire survivalists, but with crossbows and catapults. He asks Tess if she is good enough to defend an actual castle against medieval siege engines. One of the world's most notorious artifact collectors will be on hand.

Unfortunately, Peter's friends mean to turn the play war into the real thing.

This book is like a medieval war in modern times. A group of very rich men have decided that the world, as we know it, will implode leaving everyone penniless and starving. In their infinite wisdom, they have decided to speed this little disaster along, setting themselves up as the powerful to put the world back together.

Peter Gagne, wealthy from oil, decides to have a mock war using only tools from medieval times. Peter takes all modern conveniences from a castle he owns on an island. From there the game will be played. He enlists the help of his ex-girlfriend, Tess, who also happens to be a medieval war expert. Peter invites all of his rich friends, which plays into the plans of the evil rich men. The game turns into reality.

While this is not the type of book I would normally read, I enjoyed it immensely. The fight scenes were so vivid I actually could see it all happening in front of me. A bit disconcerting but great writing.

The characters are believable in a somewhat unbelievable storyline. It is really good writing that can pull this off.

This book is a great action adventure story with mystery, subterfuge, betrayal, battle strategies and more. It has much to say on many different levels from oil dependence and the economy to friendship and love.

A great read!

There are so many loose ends in this book that I don't know where to start, so I won't list them. The initial business about artifact smuggling does not connect well to the rest of the book. The correct term is "waist" not "waste" if one is going to buckle something around it. Buckling armor or sword or whatever around one's waste is rather a dreadful image. The book was nearly a waste of time, or is that "waist"?

Having said all that, it makes for a nearly good read. The premise is interesting. The price is right. I don't think I will be seeking this author out in the future, though. I was able to finish it so it gets two stars.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Interesting premise, with flaws 12 mars 2011

The story starts out a bit awkwardly, the relationships between characters is not clear and the quest to stop stolen artifacts really has nothing to do with the story. Is Peter collecting real artifacts to save them? Or is he only making copies? How does that fit into the rest of the story? Once it gets to the castle on the island and preparations for the battle, the story picks up and the action is pretty good.

Another disconnect, taking the little boy to the island also doesn't make sense, none of the action during the battle involves him at all. If he had been kidnapped, held hostage or otherwise involved, that would have been an improvement. As it is, he presence is irrelevant.

The ending also needs work to tie up loose ends. We never find out what happened to the sailboat captain, did he survive? What about the bank executive? He plays his little part and then there's no resolution.

My rating is for the story but the formatting of the Kindle edition is terrible. There are many words missing and 3/4ths of the book is in italics. Just a mess.

Some stronger editing and much stronger proofreading would have made this a much better book.

Great medieval knowledge and fun in getting there. The premise was a little far fetched, but conceivable with the state of rich guys today. Michael Wallace has some great breadth and range in his books, so you never know what to expect.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A refined and powerful thriller 7 mai 2011
Par Edward G. Talbot - Thriller author - Publié sur

Wallace has crafted something special, a modern thriller with an old-fashioned siege as its centerpiece. His attention to character motivation and his refined style make this one that will keep you up long after your eyelids start complaining.

I gave this four stars, but it's a strong four stars, closer to five. The story and pace are just right, starting off with a mystery and shifting quickly into more aggressive intrigue. The main protagonist has an unusual mixture of motivations that keep the story from ever feeling like something you've read before. We want her to succeed, but it's not always clear that success is possible given what drives her.

The best thing about this book, however, the thing that kept my eyes glued from the start, was the writing. Wallace has an excellent command of the language, knowing when to be direct and when to dance around. That balance is all too rare, and it's the reason why I plan to check out more of his work in the future.

If you're a fan of the non-stop action of a James Rollins or Matthew Reilly (and I like those as well), you won't find those in this book. Instead you'll find thrills that take some time to build, and a betrayal that while not hard to predict, nevertheless hits you between the eyes when its full extent is revealed.

Pick up State of Siege - you won't be disappointed.
