Revue de presse

"Howe documents it all — the sex, the drugs and the mystification — with the nonjudgmental vigilance of a devoted fan" —Washington Post

"Though not a memoir, Howe’s massive Nicks tome is an example of the legacy Lisa Robinson has created. Howe’s Stevie Nicks biography is her latest book, but she’s previously written about The Slits, Florence + The Machine and more." —The Riveter Magazine

Présentation de l'éditeur

Lyrical visionary, enduring style icon and one indispensable fifth of post-Peter Green megaband Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks is one of the most recognisable figures in rock n roll history - very much Fleetwood Mac s Queen Bee , as Mick Fleetwood himself describes her. While she once made headlines with her hedonistic lifestyle, part of Nicks irresistible appeal is her youthful vulnerability and mystical aura, making her an artist with whom fans have an unbreakable emotional connection. Crowned The Reigning Queen Of Rock And Roll by Rolling Stone, and with gold and quadruple platinum solo albums under her beaded belt, Stevie Nicks has enjoyed the ultimate in rock n roll success in her life as a recording artist - but this charmed life has come as a result of hard graft, self-belief and a devotion to creativity above all; hers has been a journey of intense highs and lows. This book, a celebration of the Stevie Nicks phenomenon, takes us on her journey from peripatetic mid-West childhood to her explosion onto the music scene as chiffon-swathed rock goddess, right up to present day. Including exclusive interviews with some of Stevie s associates and collaborators from over the years, author Zoë Howe explores the mystique while retaining the magic of this modern-day musical sorceress and wise woman of rock.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Captivating, Detailed, and Well-Written Biography of the Legendary Stevie Nicks 10 février 2015
Par Olivia Stabler - Publié sur Amazon.com
Being a longtime fan of Stevie and Fleetwood Mac and having read many books about her, this one is by far the most captivating and detailed! I liked how the author showcased the contrasting sides of Stevie’s personality via her life stories: the energetic front woman of one of the biggest bands in history and the shy and vulnerable woman who despite her many accomplishments still questions her musical talents. The author utilizes many interviews with Stevie and those who were closest to her at various parts of her life including Fleetwood Mac members, album producers, and friends, to provide the full story from childhood to present day. The photos of Stevie through the years were awesome because many of them I had never seen.

I was thrilled to read new and fresh information about Stevie I hadn't known, including details of her multiyear stint with Lindsey in the band Fritz, the formation of Buckingham Nicks, her embarrassment over their only album cover, and how they joined Fleetwood Mac. Any fan of Fleetwood Mac, especially during the “Rumours” era knows about the turbulent relationship of Stevie and Lindsey, but this book details the sources of the tension, including excessive drug use, Lindsey’s controlling tendencies and harsh critiques of Stevie’s songs, and even their competitiveness with each other, which the author highlighted with a story of Lindsey imitating Stevie and becoming violent onstage with her during a “Tusk” tour concert.

All of the behind the scenes details of her solo albums, her extensive collaborations with Tom Petty and Jimmy Iovine, and her heartbreaks over her love affairs with Mick Fleetwood, Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and her short but doomed marriage to Kim Anderson were fascinating. Stevie’s decade long struggle with cocaine and later her Klonopin addiction were quite riveting to read about too. The book takes us through the many Fleetwood Mac reunions and late 1980s and 1990s line up changes until their current “On With the Show” tour.

Lastly, I enjoyed that the author provided details of the inspirations behind most of the songs Stevie has written for Fleetwood Mac and as a solo artist. One interesting example is the song “Sara” from the “Tusk” album, which was about her affair with Mick Fleetwood, her friend Sara who Mick fell in love with, and the baby she aborted. Overall, this book is extremely well written, hard to put down, and offers a well-rounded perspective on the life and career of the legendary Stevie Nicks. If you’re a fan of Stevie and/or Fleetwood Mac, this is a must read!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Not bad but nothing exceptional! 25 septembre 2014

A decent read, however I knew already many of the things posted in this book. I think the author may have wanted to beat Stephen Davis to the press by getting this out before his bio of Ms. Nicks is released in October of this year.
There wasn't anything earth shattering about this book that warrants 5 stars. I actually didn't finish it there were about 4 chapters I just stopped reading due to already knowing what was going to be said.
When reading a celebrity bio a reader wants the meat and potatoes, the unknown facts of a famous person's life and work, so while not an awful read, hey at least she can spell which is an exception on kindle these days and I'm very serious when I say that. I try to be fair regarding book reviews and while Zoe Howe obviously did investigate Ms. Nicks life it felt rushed and did not have the depth one would want in a bio, especially since Stevie Nicks will probably never write her own life story.
In this book Stevie comes across as selfish, narcissistic, and the typical me, me, me that many famous people end up believing in their own hype. I at times found myself not liking Stevie Nicks the person and I am a huge fan of hers.
There is a part in this book where Stevie tells one of the (I believe producer/sound engineers) that she was happy his dog died because his dog was the one featured on the Tusk cover because according to Stevie Nicks that should of been her cover, not cool if true and extremely telling of the personality.
I liked Carol Ann Harris book much better. I found out things I didn't know about Ms. Nicks and Fleetwood Mac. There simply was not enough details in this book to keep me entertained and while I did appreciate the sense of humor that went into this book added by the author's perceptive most of what was written about regarding Ms. Nicks life, Stevie has talked of in interviews and has already been written about.
If you're a new fan this book will serve you well, older fans who already know the Stevie-Lindsey love hate etc. etc. with tons of filler I'd say wait for Davis book.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 READ STORMS & MICKS BOOK/watch YOUTUBE. THIS BOOK IS A WASTE :( 19 février 2015
Par Jess Wyler - Publié sur Amazon.com
As a huge fan I was excited by the impressive cover and size while strolling through BAM. Bought it immediately. I found my mouth opening at the blatent, continual "borrowing" from Carol Ann Harris' book 'Storms' and Mick Fleetwoods autobiography. NOTHING NEW. (I correct myself, I did NOT know the name of the mexican resteraunt the current line up met for the first time) I promise you, nothing is new here until Chapter 18. I had already seen all the Tusk footage on youtube, ect so she told me nothing that first hand witnesses, Carol Harris & Mick Fleetwood did not already share...She seemed to simply retweek their books! Horrible. Then her little asterisk beside the words "Devils' Dandruff"! She writes "I've mentioned cocaine so much I needed to find a new name.." Well, she found that name from Mick Fleetwoods' oft used word in HIS book!! pfft...I really was pretty angry at how much I spent to have found out I've already read this, and by the people who were THERE. Sigh The only thing I found to be new and worthwhile were the sections (nearer to the end) on the solo albums. I learned the meanings of so many songs that were not what I thought them to be about. Learned of the different teams that headed up her production..had no idea Glenn Johns had a part in one of her albums, only to walk out. The small bit about her affair with Joe Walsh was interesting. The Klonopin years are all on youtube/internet to read about. Please buy "Storms" and you will feel as if you are on the tour...Not the book that wouldn't have been able to fill much of her book without quoting from 'Storms'..man, this is such a let down. Finally, except for perhaps three of the photos, YOU HAVE SEEN THEM ALL BEFORE. A book of this magnitude should have at least had photos we haven't already seen in the "Google Images of Stevie Nicks"...just save your money. I feel awful writing this, as I have never done a review in my life. I am so disappointed and embarrassed for the author.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 GREAT BOOK 9 février 2015
Par DG2 - Publié sur Amazon.com
If you like Stevie Nicks, you will adore reading this book! I have read a lot about Stevie over the years and was wondering if this would add any new details for me. So happy to find that it is very detailed and has many, many things I have not read before. I am 50 pages in and it is hard to put down. About the complaint . . . all I have to say is, read this for UNDERSTANDING the content, not for picking on the author.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 I want to give it four stars, but... 13 mars 2015
Par Stevencap - Publié sur Amazon.com
On the plus side, this book is informative and enlightening on post-Mirage era Fleetwood Mac. But there are two big problems:
1. The Early Mac (Rumours and Tusk) sections are just retreads of other books I've read.
2. The cutesy writing style is really annoying. The editorializing reads like a "Hey, it's just us girls sitting around chuckling" kind of vibe.

Overall, I'd give it 4 stars (for the thorough documentation of Stevie's life and music, from 1983 onward.) But I have to drop it down to 3 stars due to the cloying writing style and the unoriginal reporting in the earlier sections.

If you've never read a book on the Mac or Stevie, however, then this would certainly suffice as an intelligent, educational read.
