Présentation de l'éditeur

Who are you, really? Who would you be if your memories, your identity, and your life were taken away from you, leaving you a bare, blank slate?

Matt Tyler no longer remembers who he was. His life prior to waking up at the Farm might well have never been lived. Was he married? Did he have children? And what of these strange dreams he has? Gwen Marshall no longer recalls her life but she knows that something is missing. She struggles to regain her memories and her identity, determined to fight her way free of the haze -- even if it kills her. Together, Matt and Gwen make their way through this strange, new world, following their dreams and the vague hints that offer tantalizing glimpses of who they were and who they might become...

"A fundamental thesis on free will. Very, very well done." Denis Fitzpatrick, This Mirror in Me.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Book review – Stolen Lives by G.K. Masterson 11 avril 2014

Format:Format Kindle
Stolen Lives by G.K. Masterson is the tale of a man who wakes up one day to find he has no memory of who he is, where he is from, what his life had once been. He is not alone. There are others. Others who were also brought to Saint George’s Home for Terminally Injured and Impaired, known as the Farm.

He is told his name, Matt, and nothing else. He is told it is best to remember the rest on his own. However, trying to recall brings on debilitating headaches. Many of the others, who have been there longer, have stopped trying to remember. Many of the others have accepted their situations. They no longer want to know why and how they came to be there. But, Matt is new to the Farm; and, he is not ready to give up. Neither is Gwen, a long-term resident of the Farm; she attempts to remember at all cost, despite the migraines.

Matt and Gwen form a friendship, a bond built on mutual need and support. Both fear they may never regain their memories. But, their need to know pushes them to test the severity of the headaches. As Matt and Gwen begin to have small breakthroughs, they uncover a plot to keep all memories suppressed. They spy on the staff and discover a conspiracy by the doctors to keep them, and the others, from recalling not only who they are, but why they are there. There is more at stake than just memories. Can Matt and Gwen thwart the efforts of the doctors? Will they recover all of their lost memories? Can they help the others do the same?

As flashes of memory slowly emerge, an attraction grows between Matt and Gwen. They want to remember. But, what happens if they do? Can Matt and Gwen live with what they find out about themselves? Can they still be together? Will they want to?

Stolen Lives is a mystery full of suspense and action. Masterson sprinkles in some romance, too. The plot, though not original, is handled with finesse. The pace is a bit sluggish at the start, but picks up as the story unfolds. The characters are solid and moral and likable, a rare trifecta in today’s novels. The dialogue is, at times, stilted. But, I’m sure this young author will improve, with time. Overall, the story is a good read. And, at 213 pages, the length is just right for bedtime or lunchtime, or for a leisurely weekend read.

I recommend Stolen Lives to anyone who wants to read a clever mystery. I give it 3 stars.

My favorite quote from Stolen Lives: “Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.”

I was the beta-reader for this novel and doing so was an experience that I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed; it's great to be the first upon the site of a new wonder. I read it in two sittings and the second sitting started with my jumping out of bed to see how things turned out. But, to specifics.
The plot development in this novel is perfect, neither too slow nor too fast. As the plot continues there is something new and interesting around each corner. All of the characters are well drawn and they all grow throughout the novel. The two main characters are believable as being the crux of the plot and their relationship with each other is truly endearing. The themes are substantial and genuine food for thought, the novel being a fundamental thesis on free will, not human free will but free will in general. In fact, I can not think of anything that I disliked about this novel. It would suit anyone who enjoys literary fiction. I myself am a reader of nineteenth century fiction and this novel suited me to a tee. If I were to compare this novel with current literary fiction writers I would choose John Irving as both Masterson, in this novel, and Irving both deal with important themes, although Masterson is not at all as rambling as Irving. Lastly, the price of the novel is very reasonable and is a very sound investment in one's own moral growth. I look forward to seeing more of Masterson's work in the future.
