Présentation de l'éditeur

Estranged for years from her father and four brothers after her mother’s death, Carson Cartwright is surprised when she gets a phone call from her twin brother, urging a reconciliation before their father succumbs to his final illness. Though she has spent more than a decade trying to forget her family existed, she is suddenly pulled back to the Montana ranch where she grew up.

Carson discovers her brothers divided over plans to change their working ranch into a guest ranch, and their consultant, Kerry Elder, doesn’t seem above using her wiles to get her way. Kerry finds that while she may have her clients right where she wants them, it’s the wayward sister that may be awakening something she has long denied.

The big Montana sky crackles with thunder and lightning as emotions twist in unbidden directions. Neither Carson nor Kerry is prepared for the wild storms of summer.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Entertaining 2 août 2011

Carson Cartwright hasn't seen her family for twelve years. After her mother died and her father basically threw her out because he blamed her for her mother's death, she spent years pretending to be satisfied with one-night stands and her rich friends. Now her twin brother calls to tell her their father is dying and their brothers are running their family ranch into the ground.

When Carson reluctantly returns home, she meets Kerry Elder, who is just starting her own consulting business and wants to convince Carson's brothers to turn the ranch into a guest ranch.

Both feel a connection from the start, but Kerry is straight - or so she thinks - and one of Carson's brothers has his eye on her.

"Storms" is a solid romance with good editing. Some things could have been explored more deeply, for example, Carson never really has a long conversation with her brothers and all the old feelings and resentments are never resolved.

At times, it was hard to keep her brothers apart, because their names were too similar (Cody, Colt, Chase, and Chance) and we don't see enough of them to give them distinct personalities.

Otherwise, the book provides a few hours of entertainment.

I was surprised that I really liked this one. It just she once more shows that even if the story is kind of same old, same old, good characterizations and/or something special about a book can make for a really enjoyable read rather than being annoyed most of the time.

There was something about the characters here that really clicked with me, even if most plot lines could be seen coming from a mile away. I also really thought that the setting was described marvelously.

Also, for a Bella book, really light on spelling mistakes ;)

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Mostly inoffensive and typical; easy read with no nasty surprises 10 novembre 2011
Par B. Rabkeb - Publié sur
Set on a struggling ranch in Montana, we join Carson as she returns to the home she was kicked out of in her late teens once her mother died. Her father is on his death bed. Her twin brother is skeptical of the consultant, Kerry, brought in to turn the working ranch into a guest ranch. Kerry is striking out on her own with the consultant business, after doing the leg work for others for years. Ostensibly straight, she's surprised that Carson immediately assumes she's gay, but she's probably more suprised at their immediate chemistry.

This book was fine. It didn't have trouble holding my attention, I had no trouble finishing it, and it was an extremely quick read as it mostly skated across the surface of the deeper emotional subjects it brought up. The countryside was well-described. I liked the setting. There were some fun moments with horses and food. But mostly it felt like it could have happened in almost any setting. And I was left wondering whatever happened to the old ranch at the end, and the rest of the brothers. The characters were mostly indisctinct, apart from their actions in individual scenes, but you got enough to lend structure to the story.

Carson and Kerry had pretty good chemistry. You as the reader wanted them to end up with one another, and they were sympathetic and trying their best, so you were happy when they were happy. There are no real emotional truths unearthed; despite the potentially heavy subject matter there wasn't any real angst. There was some repetitive description of their emotional journeys, which felt like treading water sometimes. And while I was mildly offended that one of the female characters disparagingly described one of the brothers who was being dramatic as "being a girl", that's really a quibble. This book didn't really have anything strong to say about relationships or the human condition. It didn't take a strong point of view on anything, really. But it was a pleasant enough way to spend your time if you like this genre.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Montana, horses, hot barn sex... 1 novembre 2011

Exiled from her home as a teen, 30 year old soft butch Carson Cartwright finds her way back to the old Montana ranch 12 years later. Waiting for her are a house full of bitter brothers, one cranky old man on his death bed... and one dormant lesbian in over her head in this house full of testosterone.

Kerry Elder is the 34 year old consultant hired to help transform this ailing ranch into a profitable guest ranch... newly single from her ex-boyfriend and finally detached from a bigger corporate employer, Kerry hopes to launch her own career as a self-employed consultant and break out on her own.

Needlesstosay, the air is full of change.

* There are some light spoilers ahead.

Rejected by her father, Carson had spiraled into a loveless lifestyle of empty sex and travel... never letting anyone close.

But then. There is Kerry. Beautiful Kerry. Her savior? Or just another hot straight girl intrigued by Carson's smoldering charms and "dark skin" good looks? Not according to Carson's gaydar... this girl has manhands! Okay, the author didn't use 'manhands'... but it was something along those terms. My taste for feminine women probably didn't need that particular detail, lol.

I don't know if it was the house full of unmarried blending brothers - Colt, Chase, Cody, Chance on this Circle C Ranch... or how the family squabbles took the forefront here... but Carson and Kerry kinda took a backseat here and I felt no real chemistry between these two- probably because the trust was so instant and I struggled to buy into it.

But then they slept together and even I got brainwashed. They were definitely a couple and fun to watch at his point. Why? Because Gerri Hill can do some pretty hot sex scenes, lol... I just preferred these lighter scenes.

Entirely too much focus was given to a house full of men I didn't care about. And not because they're men... but because we didn't really get to know them or care about them... this is a really dysfunctional, socially inept bunch due to their isolation, lack of mother, and daddy issues. In the end only the gay people get to be happy... this kind of bothered me.

This really wasn't a hopeless story, but it has its flaws. I enjoyed the country setting, the storm, and each and every time these two got naked. I would have liked to see Kerry's femininity highlighted more. She got a bad rap with those manhands. ;P I suspect she was prettier than that but was seldom described... at least not for my tastes.

Overall, the family drama was repetitive and unsympathetic for me... and the hostile lust one brother aims at Kerry becomes tiring and silly.

I suppose the author felt the same... she seems to have abandoned the whole thing around the end and we never know what happened at the old Circle C Ranch and the brothers. What did I miss?! You'll know what I mean when you read... I couldn't help feeling there was some chapter missing....??

I'm a sucker for the idea of ranches and girls on horses and such... this is flawed (or typical?) but a guilty little pleasure. And did I say the sex was awesome?? (Oh please don't interpret my playful stress on her sex scenes as gratuitous or pornographic... I just like to see an author who knows how to do sexy sex in my romances :) )

I'm a Gerri Hill fan for sure... she has the easy style and bearable drama I enjoy most from this genre. But I think she definitely has some better stories.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Yet another solid read from Gerri Hill 12 septembre 2011
Par Jen - Publié sur
I think Gerri Hill is perhaps my favorite romance author. Once again she has put out another solid novel that doesn't quite reach the strength her best works (Gulf Breeze, No Strings, The Killing Room to name a few), but is still perfectly enjoyable. Another reviewer gripped that its easy to confuse the brothers and I have to second that. By the end of the book I had worked them out, but often kept asking myself which one was which. If you are like me and feel that Gerri Hill can do no wrong then I don't think you will be disappointed here.
