Présentation de l'éditeur

The overly scientific, always respectable, and socially awkward Alexander Banks has just been informed his name resides on a betrothal agreement right above the name of the worst chit in all of England. With a loophole that allows him to marry another without consequence before the thirtieth anniversary of his birth, he has only four weeks to find another woman and make her his wife. Being the logical scientist he is, Alex decides to take his friend's advice and treat his quest for a bride just like a science experiment...

Caroline Sinclair is still trying to scrape her jaw off the floor after hearing her cousin, Lady Olivia’s, latest announcement when the object of their conversation, Alex Banks, Olivia’s intended, arrives for what Caroline assumes is a bout of drawing room chitchat with his betrothed. But when an experiment is mentioned, Caroline, who cannot resist a science experiment any more than she can deny her lungs air, volunteers to help before she even knows what his latest experiment is!

Biographie de l'auteur

Rose Gordon always dreamed of growing up to be either a rocket scientist, or more probable, a high school history teacher. Instead, she grew up to be a writing accountant who builds and launches model rockets in her spare time! Gaining a full scholarship to a college that offered neither aeronautical engineering nor education, she majored in business administration/accounting. Not long after graduating, she realized accounting was not for her and decided to go back to school to major in secondary education social studies like she should have done to start with. Lacking one elective, she took creative writing and found what she was really wanted to do with her life: write. Specifically, historicals. Her first trilogy, Scandalous Sisters series, was all written within a year. When not tapping on the keyboard, she can be found tapping nails in boards and wrapping string around them to make a picture, building and launching model rockets, shoving her nose in a good book, camping, hiking, fishing or playing yet another game of Candyland with her young boys.

Alex Bank is a man obsessed with science but whom fate has decided to give him something else to focus on for a while. 1 month before his 30th birthday Alex is informed by his father that he must marry before his 30th birthday or he will be forced to marry Lady Olivia who is a vile creature to say the least.

Caroline is Olivia's cousin who has resigned herself to spinsterhood, where she can pursue her scientific studies all she wants. Of course it would be easier for Caroline if she was allowed to join the Society of Biological Matters but due to her sex she was denied membersip by none other then Alex Bank.

When it is pointed out to Alex that Caroline would be perfect for him he only has a couple of weeks to not only gain her forgivness for throwing her out of the Society a few years before, but also to win her heart. And he has to do this while trying to understand that people are not like experements, they cannot be easily controlled and studied. He will need to let his heart take the lead if he is going to have any hope of avoiding marriage to Olivia.

This is the 4th book I have read by Rose Gordon and each one is better then the last in my opinion. If you are looking for a romance in which the hero is not a rake and isn't always proving is ablity with the ladies, and a heroine who is more like the girl next door then a spoil heiress expecting the world to be handed to her on a silver platter this is the book for you. You can really feel the characters fall in love as you watch Alex be clueless about women and Caroline's fears of falling in love with her cousins future husband.

I would also suggest that if you love this book that you go back and learn about the rest Banks love stories in Rose's first series while waiting for the next Groom Series to come out.

First off the cover is perfect for this story! This story is a continuation of the Scandalous Sisters. Alex Banks is their cousin who we meet in the other books. We get to catch up with family from the first three books and meet some new friends that I think will be in the next books. The earlier books will give you a taste of Olivia as well, she is a piece of work! I think the combination of Alex and Caroline is refreshing and it works! I enjoyed watching them grow as a couple and overcome difficult things. This does contain descriptive sex after marriage. I look forward to reading the next three books in this series. I always enjoy a good family series. It is so fun to see how things are going for couples and families. This book can also stand alone.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The Bride Experiment.... 17 octobre 2011

If you enjoy your books in series and want the whole picture you will want to read the first three books in the Scandalous Sisters Series by Rose. You will meet Alex and Olivia in those books and understand better who they are and what they are like.

Book 1: Her Sudden Groom by Rose Gordon Groom Series
Edward Banks, now on his death bed, tell his eldest son Alex, about a betrothal agreement he made with his best friend when his daughter was born on the same day as Alex eight years later, Lady Olivia Sinclair. Later on they added a statement saying that if either of them married before his 30th birthday, the agreement would be null and void. Alex has thirty days to find a bride, Alex who is brilliant when it comes to science but not so much when it comes to woman. He does know he could never tolerate life with Olivia, if it were bad enough that she unattractive, dressed poorly and smelled bad but her disposition was even worse! Marcus Sinclair agrees that if Alex can find a bride within thirty days he won't hold him to marrying Olivia, after all Marcus likes Alex. Marcus suggests that Alex treats finding a bride as an experiment. When Caroline Sinclair overhears that word she wants to join in and help with what she thinks is a scientific experiment, she missed the first part of the conversation. Alex finds her lovely and distracting but as smart as he is it takes Marcus to point out how perfect they would match up.
Caroline was adopted by her Uncle's family when she was seven. Her mother was dead and her father a addict. She had to put up with her cruel cousin Olivia all these years. Caroline was jealous of her cousin who would marry the handsome man. It was Caroline who was getting to spend time with him though. She was busy writing up notes for experiments, playing lawn games and spending time with him. And finding out it was true, Alex seemed to only be able to converse about science.

This book continues where the Scandalous Sisters left off. Alex Banks is their cousin who we meet in the other books. He is always being scientific. We get to see our old friends from the first three books and meet some new ones as well who will be in the next books. The earlier books will prepare you for Olivia as well, she is quite irritating!
**Sexual situations within marriage.

There wasn't much detail to identify this book as occurring during the regency and when the H/h were repeatedly put into compromising situations, neither of them cared. Really? He rode over to her cousins estate and then carried her back to his own on his lap and she went along with this? We are told that she feels bad about betraying her cousin with the man she is supposedly betrothed to but she does nothing about it. The "villain", her cousin, Olivia has enough character flaws to sink a battleship. Apparently, she weighs enough to sink one as well as we are made aware of, over and over again, as she is the target of mean spirited jokes by both the H and h and everybody else they know. She is obnoxious and ugly. I get it. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, Caroline exhibits many of the same personality traits but she is beautiful, so it is OK. With such a negative personality was it really necessary to have Alex and his friends speculate about the obviously overweight Olivia's actual weight and then have our sweet heroine cheerily volunteer her true weight when their guess wasn't high enough? I could not like either Caroline or Alex as they both seem nearly as petty and vindictive as Olivia, who is way over the top with no redeeming qualities. I have read the "scandalous sisters" trilogy and it was engaging enough for me to buy this series which is a follow on, especially as it was so highly rated, but I will be more wary in the future. Of course, I may be suffering from sour grapes as Olivia and I both have frizzy orange hair (I prefer to call it curly auburn myself) and green squinty eyes (although I hope mine are only squinty when I'm in a temper as Olivia always seems to be). But I'm lucky, my hero thinks I'm as beautiful today as he thought I was when he married me many years and three children later. In the end, they all got who they deserved. Even if, in my opinion, none of them deserved very much.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Decent... ish? 3 octobre 2013

I was able to pick this book up for free during one of Amazon's recent specials, but only just got around to reading it. I'm only about halfway through the novel at this point and do intend to continue finishing it eventually (so I will likely update this review later), but have already formed something of an opinion.

I feel this book is a decent read, but was torn between a two and three star rating. I think that the author did put time and effort into writing this, and I feel like she has some great potential, but I also feel that this attempt was... well, rather amateur. Though the romance feels a little awkward and rushed, I do like the main characters so far and think they will make an engaging couple. My problem is not so much with the plot, but with the writing style. Reactions (i.e. blinking) and certain other aspects are repeated frequently, at halfway through the book I'd say I've read the nickname "Arid Alex" and the reasons behind it about 3 times (I'm being generous...). I also have a very big problem with the "villain"; though there are people out there who are genuinely offensive, I think Olivia is really overplayed for the novel. I also have something of a problem with the weight comments, with a personality so nasty and overdone do we really need to hear every other paragraph how fat and ugly and nasty Olivia is appearance-wise? Olivia seems to be the epitome of the author's vision of "BAD" while Caroline is the author's vision of "GOOD", and Olivia only exists to make Caroline look good. Where we got a detailed (sometimes TOO detailed) study of Olivia and a decent (if occasionally purple prose filled) description of Caroline, I'm halfway through the book and the only think I know of Alex is his eye color. Is he tall and lanky, short and stocky? Is he traditionally handsome, handsome in an unusual way, or goofy looking? What sort of spectacles does he wear? What color is his hair, and how is it worn? How does he dress? These are all important questions to answer for the reader so they can picture scenes and interactions better.

Another major issue I've had so far is the lack of research. In one of the (if not THE) first scene where Olivia is with her intended, there are not one but TWO nip-slips and Olivia's guardian's response is just to tell her to put them away?? I think not, not even during the modern day, let alone the more prudish time period the novel is set in! There are also several sexual puns/jokes made by both male and female characters, both in private and mixed company, that would have been regarded as so scandalous for the time period that the speakers would have been publicly shamed and shunned. There are several similar discrepancies throughout the novel; I'm no expert of the time period by any means but I've read enough and researched enough to spot the numerous inconsistencies.

There is also a marked lack of any sort of background on the characters. Several times I've found myself wondering if I was supposed to read a novel (or several novels) before this, but the book is labeled as "(Groom Series, Book One)" in the title. Is it maybe mislabeled?? Several times I've been left going "WHO?!" when a character is mentioned, and have to flip back through the book only to discover that I have no idea who they are because they'd never been mentioned, or were vaguely mentioned in a sentence.

TL;DR:
Will I continue reading? Probably. Have I enjoyed it so far? Kind of. Will I give the author a second chance? Maybe.

EDIT:
I gave up on the book entirely last night. My rating went from a three star, to a two star, to a one star the more I thought about it. The final straw? I quote: "Oh, Alex, I'm so sorry," she said suddenly, clapping a hand across her mouth. "I didn't mean to embarrass you. I didn't realize I was sitting on your erection."

Nope, I'm done!
