Revue de presse

“The most significant discovery of the space age is that we humans are, first and foremost, indigenous Earthlings. Sustainable Revolution is a profound reminder of what this means.… By detailing local applications of eternally regenerative design principles, it eloquently demonstrates the inspiring possibilities—and critical importance—of synchronizing with the highly evolved patterns emerging from our home planet’s cycles of life.”—David McConville, chairman of the Buckminster Fuller Institute
“In today's sped-up, hyper-individualized, consumer-frenzied society, it's hard not to feel off-kilter. Birnbaum and Fox's book is the perfect medicine for the moment, offering guidance and inspiration to reclaim and repair our relationship with ourselves, our community and the planet.”—Annie Leonard, founder of the Story of Stuff Project
“Our culture has been at war with the world for millennia, wresting our food from it as if it were an enemy to be conquered.… Permaculture isn't just another way of growing food, it's a culture different from ours, a culture making peace with the world in every way. See it at work in this book. You’ll be astonished. I was.”—Daniel Quinn, author of Ishmael

Biographie de l'auteur

Trained as a cultural anthropologist and skilled in four languages, Juliana Birnbaum has lived and worked in the U.S., Europe, Japan, Nepal, Costa Rica and Brazil. In 2005 she founded Voices in Solidarity, an initiative that partnered with Ashaninka indigenous tribal leaders from the Brazilian Amazon to support the development of the Yorenka Ãtame community-led environmental educational center featured in the book. She has written about ecovillages, native rights, and social justice issues in a variety of newspapers, indigenous journals, and anthologies including E-The Environmental Magazine, Bridges Journal, El Reportero, The Rising Nepal, World Rainforest Movement Bulletin, Quechua Network, and Cultural Survival Quarterly. She was the first graduate of the Cornerstone Doula School, one of the most rigorous natural birth programs in the U.S., focusing on a holistic model of care. She is engaged variously as writer, editor, teacher, midwife assistant and mother when not attempting new yoga poses or learning how to garden.

Louis Fox is a storyteller, strategist, photographer, puppeteer, and filmmaker dedicated to looking at the world as it truly is, while also envisioning it as it could be. Since cofounding Free Range Studios in 1999, he’s created some of the most successful online cause-marketing campaigns of all time. His work for clients like Amnesty International, the Organic Trade Association, Patagonia, and Greenpeace has been featured in the New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, CNN, FOX News, NPR, Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum, The Colbert Report, and Fast Company magazine, which named him one of the fifty most influential social innovators of 2007. As a filmmaker, he has directed and cowritten over a hundred short live action and animated films. His projects The Meatrix, Grocery Store Wars, and the on-going Story of Stuff series, have been viewed by more than 60 million people and have garnered top honors at dozens of international film and media festivals.

Juliana Birnbaum, Louis Fox, and their daughters Lîla and Serenne live in California’s San Geronimo Valley and are founding members of a collective permaculture farm in Costa Rica.

Long on The Good, short on The Bad and The Ugly 7 mars 2014
Par CW - Publié sur
Format: Broché
As a long time lover of permaculture I am at once encouraged and disheartened by this passionate and noble undertaking.
It has been PC's unwitting undoing that so many of its practitioners have found in it a pseudo-religion to justify a "radically different way of living" at the expense of PC's promise of affording the majority of us accessible ways to move towards self-reliance. Pc's genius was to empower us to start growing food "where we live" WITHOUT having to "paradigm shift" and adopt the multitude of "woo-woo" ideas that Mollison himself continually decried.
The "ugly" truth is that New-Age spirituality and philosophy; drum circles and designs; earthworks and yurts are easy - Growing enough food to cover even a small portion of a family's winter needs is exceedingly, bitterly difficult.
Permaculture offers us ways to make "moving from consumer to producer" easier. However, as the lack of pictures depicting anything like the much vaunted " abundance" that is supposed to "flow" so easily from being "connected" to "Gaia's energy" attests, easier doesn't mean easy and the "bad" part of this review stems from the book's glossy denial of this reality.
At the end of the day, what appears to have been lost from Mollison's original thrust was that economic and ecological sustainability
along with community resiliency will result not from 10 % of us living 100% hard-core greenie, but rather from 100% of us living 10% greener. As long as books like this continue to reinforce PC's sadly deserved fringe reputation, PC will remain what this book too clearly shows it to be - a pipe dream wrapped in failed potential, inspiring the few to "tune in and drop out" while alienating the many....

An incredible, detailed account of the life we are all yearning for 4 mars 2014

I could not recommend it this book enough.

The authors are personal friends of mine, and I've watched them labour over it for the past 8 years. They visited communities all over the world looking for models of living that are radically different than how we have been trained to live.

What they discovered will blow your mind. The book is stock filled with examples of people making different choices about what's important, and what's valued in life. Choices that honor how we used to live in community, share our lives in ways that enrich, and redefine what wealth, friendship and family can mean.

If, like me, you have a part of you that yearns for a different way of living, this book is a true inspiration. It's not a book of prescriptive answers about how we should live, but a book of possibilities. When you see how these communities are choosing to organize, you can't help but ask yourself important questions about how you're living and what you're prioritizing.

Everyone I know is getting a copy as a gift.

A book that changed my mind profoundly 9 mars 2014
Par Daniel Quinn - Publié sur
Format: Broché
Early last November the authors of this book asked me to read an advance copy with the idea of my possibly contributing a few words of recommendation. I did that, and my words of recommendation were these: "Our culture has been at war with the world for 10,000 years, wresting our food from it as from an enemy to be conquered, poisoned, worked to death, and discarded. Permaculture isn't just a way of growing food, it's a culture different from ours, a culture making peace with the world in every way. See it at work here. You'll be astonished. I was." (I put the words here since they can otherwise only be seen on the physical book itself, not here online.)

Ever since reading it, I've been sending people to this site (thinking the book would surely be available by then). Well, now at last, it IS available.

This book had such a terrific effect on me that I was moved to add a chapter about it (and about Permaculture) to a book of my own then in preparation, The Invisibility of Success (also now available here on Amazon).

An Exposition of Truth. 5 avril 2014
Par Bjoie - Publié sur
Format: Broché
Actually, there are plenty of great technical books that go into detail about how to grow your food, and how to deal with the considerable challenges. I didn't find anything in this book that says it's "easy." I'm not sure where you got that. This book is more about expanding people's narrow perception of what permaculture thinking is good for, and inspiring people. It's an introduction to permaculture as a cultural movement. It's going to be hard to get people to be interested in adopting a permaculture lens if one's main focus is on the struggle of getting your food growing system in place. This review is unfair. This book is a celebration and an introduction. It's excellent for people who are new to permaculture. Once they get a taste for it and get inspired, then I suggest they go for the dense techincal books like Permaculture: A Designers' Manual (567 pages). And finally, the fundamental principal underlying Mollison's conception of permaculture was a search for social justice and the human capacity to live in harmony with not only planet, but each other. Mind you, a practice that requires kindness, compassion, selflessness, and acceptance of every part of the whole, even the parts that are "woo woo".

Get Inspired to Create a New World 5 avril 2014
Par Scott Badenoch - Publié sur
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
If you want to see the world we wish to create, here it is, page after page, a true tour de force of positive (r)evolution. You will be inspired and amazed at what people are doing all over the world. Whether you want to visit these incredible and unique communities on your travels (or even become a part of them!) or bring their techniques into your own life, buy this book. The photos are excellent, the layout intuitive and the read enjoyable. This book is a great addition to any permaculture fan, student or practitioner's collection and is a profound gift for anyone interested in the subject and ready to get thinking and moving in the direction of building a new world. While this is not a step-by-step how-to manual, it is an in depth look at the array of models/options out there, depending on the climate zone you are in (and if you get inspired by one, go to that thing called the interwebs to research more specifically the how-tos). Everyone knows that it's no easy thing to create a permaculture community or grow all the food you need to live on and this book doesn't say otherwise, but it does give you a roadmap for action like none I've seen before.
