Présentation de l'éditeur

Forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan returns in a chilling eBook original novella from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs. In the prequel to Reichs’s upcoming thriller Bones Never Lie, Tempe takes a much-needed vacation—but murder follows wherever she goes.
Although a trip to Florida is supposed to be about rest and relaxation, there’s no such thing as a day off for Dr. Temperance Brennan. She has come to visit her friend, a dedicated ornithologist who’s researching the threat that intrusive Burmese pythons pose to indigenous bird species in the Everglades. While sorting through the stomach of an eighteen-foot specimen, they make a disturbing discovery: bones that are unmistakably human. And when Tempe spots the telltale signs of murder by a very different kind of predator, she’s drawn into a case with its roots in the darkest depths of the swamp.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great Novella! 18 août 2014

Lately, before the release of the new Tempe Brennan novel, author Kathy Reichs blows through a novella about her signature character that takes Tempe and the reader to a new place and usually a new corner of forensics. In this one, Tempe is on vacation (doesn’t last long because a body turns up—well, pieces of a body—in the stomach of a stomach) and is dropping in on another specialist friend.

I didn’t know the true difference of necropsy and autopsy until this book, and it was fascinating to see all the science behind doing animal forensics. Reichs throws in a lot of other science and detail, too, that made me want to go rooting around in science manuals to find out more about the topics, which is what any good instructor will do.

Reichs’ writing is always great, easy to lose yourself in, and I really think she might be at her best with some of the shorter work she’s doing. I don’t know what her writing time is like, but I know she has to stay busy keeping up with all the cutting-edge science in her field, the Bones television show that keeps on coming out year after year, and writing fiction. Lately the novellas have seemed a little crisper than the novels, a little more on target, but they lack the twists and turns Reichs likes to throw into her longer works. These novellas take place in a matter of days (so Tempe can do some work and get a few days off), and that definitely affects the reading experience.

I blazed through this one in a single sitting, even though it seems longer than her last novella. Although I haven’t ever been to Miami (other than Disney and a couple hotels), I’ve researched the area frequently. While I was turning the pages, I felt like I was cruising down the back roads and the Everglades with Tempe.

There were enough twists and turns to keep a mystery reader guessing, enough forensics to keep the armchair crime scene investigator locked in, and sporadic fun along with plenty of action. This novella is definitely one for fans of the series and people who are interested in reading the books to jump on.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 "Pythonous" bones 17 août 2014

Many popular authors write short e-book novellas as promos for their next book, and in most cases they are really not worth reading. SWAMP BONES by Kathy Reichs is an exception - a great self-contained novella which covers new "bone" territory for Tempe Brennan and involves her investigating and solving multiple murders in a book that only takes a couple of hours to read.

Forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan is taking a well earned vacation visiting a good friend Lisa Robbin in Florida. Lisa is a dedicated ornithologist who is checking out the stomach contents of introduced Burmese pythons who are eating their way through indigenous animal and bird species in the Everglades. Within minutes of meeting her friend in her laboratory, Tempe makes a chilling discovery that the stomach contents that Lisa is examining clearly contain human foot bones. Tempe's vacation is immediately put on hold.

In a relatively few pages Reichs takes us through murder investigations in the Florida Everglades where the victims have been carved up by a chain saw and left as meals for vultures, pythons and alligators. The action takes place in the darkest depths of the swamp at the same time as many hunters are in the Everglades competing in "The Python Challenge" with prizes for the most killed, longest etc from State Fish and Wildlife.

I give top marks to Kathy Reichs for a very different, chilling, well written novella. Given her current writing form I am looking forward to the next full length Tempe Brennan novel Bones Never Lie: A Novel (Temperance Brennan Book 17) to be released on 23 September 2014.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 CREEPILY, SCIENTIFICALLY, BRILLIANT! 14 août 2014

Well for a so-called short story (the release is really a novella) , it certainly gets off to an impressive start. The first sentence is good enough to highlight on your kindle, so just to save you the trouble of reading it, here it is: "March. Barely Spring, yet the unseasonable Florida humidity made me feel like I'd disembarked from my flight into a Rottweiler's mouth".

Clearly this is a great way to start a story, and it is funny, too. Anyway, Temperance (Tempe) is due to meet friend and work colleague Dr Robbin, who works at the Daniel Beard Research Centre. Of course the two friends meet, get to talking, but the inevitable happens. Discussion centres on the ability of Dr Robbin to study the consumption patterns of the local python (yes, i said python) in the Florida swamps. Talk leads to the snake's diet and soon Tempe is giving herself a quick run down of the samples found in the lab. Tempe wouldn't be Tempe if a discovery is not made in a few exciting heart beats and it turns out with an exciting finish to chapter one, that the bones found in a vulture are not what should be there...

I shall say no more of the plot but for a newbie (or otherwise) to the world of Dr Brennan, this is a glorious way to jump back in. The pacing of the book is just right. The characters jump right out of your kindle screen and are perfectly matched to the essence of the story. The story is quite technical, but we all knew that going in. The atmosphere builds slowly but with the crescendos to be found within the story, it is not long before you so engrossed in the story that you won't be able to stop reading until you reach the story's end.

I give this lovely novella five stars and can't wait to jump right into the forthcoming new release featuring the world's sexiest and smartest scientist / crime solver.

Forensic anthropologist Dr Tempe Brennan was joining a colleague and friend, Dr Lisa Robbin in Florida’s Everglades for a much needed vacation. She was starting to doubt her choice of holiday destination though – the humidity was high, her thoughts of beaches, sand and her latest Jodi Picoult novel a distant dream. At least she had the novel with her! But when she met Lisa in her place of work, the Daniel Beard Research Centre where Lisa was head of the Smithsonian Feather Identification Lab, she discovered the next few hours were to change the course of her vacation in a dramatic fashion…

Join Tempe once again in the identification of human bones, found in gruesome circumstances – with Sheriff T. Yellen of the Miami-Dade Police Department at her side, the investigation was deep, fast and extremely dangerous. Was Tempe’s break to be the “vacation that never was” or would it be something much more sinister?

I thoroughly enjoyed this short e-story by the brilliant Kathy Reichs. The pace is fast, the plot thick, the pages turned quickly until the end. The bursts of laugh out loud humour were great – I loved Tempe’s dry wit. I have no hesitation in recommending "Swamp Bones" highly.

With thanks to Random House UK via NetGalley for my copy to read and review.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 excellent Tempe taster 17 août 2014

Swamp Bones is a novella in the Temperance Brennan series by forensic anthropologist and popular American author, Kathy Reichs and is presented in electronic format only. In Florida’s Everglades for a break at the invitation of Dr Lisa Robbins, forensic ornithologist, Tempe finds that March is already hot and sticky. Before she even gets a chance to cool down and relax, she manages to get drawn into a murder investigation as she idly rummages through the stomach contents of a Burmese python (as you do). Her incidental finds draw the attention of the local sheriff, a wildlife biologist and a National Parks Law Enforcement officer. The investigation into the identity of the likely victim leads to an encounter with a live alligator, the Miccosukee Indian community and some swamp rednecks. Tempe’s propensity to tackle a situation without support lands her in dangerous waters. Reichs has obviously done quite a bit of research of an ornithological and herpetological nature: this short offering contains plenty of facts about birds and snakes. Who even knew that there was a word for a non-human autopsy? This excellent Tempe taster also includes the opening chapter of the next Temperance Brennan novel, Bones Never Lie.
