Présentation de l'éditeur

After two years and too many lost troops, Navy medic Max de Milles is ready to go home. Her last tour is up in four days and she will soon be catching a transport to the States. Life is looking good until she gets detailed to evacuate a humanitarian group in south Somalia.

Rachel Winslow and her Red Cross team are caught in the crossfire during a vicious civil uprising, but she refuses to abandon her team members as the rebels close in on their camp. By the time Max and the Black Hawk arrive, it may already be too late.

Hunted by extremists, Max and Rachel are forced to work together if they are to survive, and in the process, discover something far more lasting.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Good story, too bad about "Africa" 14 juillet 2014

Format:Broché
I am a huge fan of Radclyffe's books and I've read all - or at least almost all - of them. As a writer she consistently finds new characters and scenarios and of course she writes brilliantly well so it's such a pleasure to read any of her books if you're even remotely into the lesbian romance genre. This book is no exception. The characters are interesting and flawed and human and their relationship develops in a way that feels very true to those characters. I enjoyed the arc of their relationship immensely.

I had one major issue with the book unfortunately. There were some staggeringly ignorant comments and views towards "Africa". For example that war is a way of life for almost all African people. I'm paraphrasing there, but not by much. What a hideously ignorant and factually incorrect statement to make. In the first instance an entire continent is homogenized into a single entity when in reality you could hardly find greater diversity on this earth. "Africa" consists of 54 countries each with various cultures, spoken and written languages, huge sprawling cities and massively diverse populations. Reducing an entire continent to a that is not only embarrassingly ignorant, it's also incredibly offensive. While sadly there are countries and areas that are war torn and people have to live under terrible circumstances, the VAST majority of Africans live in large urban cities and haven't seen a day of war IN THEIR LIVES. To suggest otherwise, really speaks to an inane level of ignorance, that is both dangerous and hurtful.

I'm not sure why I keep reading Radclyffe's books. I was a huge fan of her first several, but it seems lately that she is more intent on churning out the next book than writing a quality story. They are all starting to blur together for me, and this latest one is no exception. Girl meets girl, is impressed by her stubbornness, then inexplicably falls deeply in love with her. (The sex scenes aren't even that great. They used to be about passion and feelings, but now they just seem to be gratuitous). Hopefully, Radclyffe will find her way back to doing what she does best: making her reader FEEL.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Another great adventure/love story from Radclyfee 24 juillet 2014

Radclyfee has again created new characters and situations that will capture the reader from the first page. Based primarily in Somalia this story revolves around a few of those helping refugees to escape the brutal terror and the violence of the war. It is about two women, Rachel working as a volunteer with the Red Cross/Red Crescent and Max, a Navy combat physician. It is an episode in the lives of these protagonists that is apart from their “real world” that will change them and their view of the world in a way that the reader is left to imagine.
These characters show themselves to be true heroes while being simply human with all the attendant flaws, fears, strengths and beauty. Two women isolated from the time and space of their “real world” that find themselves, each other and of course love.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Loved this book! 14 juillet 2014

Loved this book! The plot is so well developed along with the characters. You really feel the fatigue of Navy medic Max as you watch her get drawn into a rescue mission four days before shipping back to the states. The relationship between her and Rachel Winslow develops slowly in the tension of the so-well-written plot. The book is contemporary, detailed, and insightful to the costs of military work while respecting that work at the same time. There is great resolution for the couple and for them both as individuals.

You'll find yourself right there with them!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Radclyffe again does what she does so well. . . .another page turner! 21 juillet 2014
Par RLynne - Publié sur Amazon.com

Taking Fire is set in war torn Somalia. As the book opens, Rachel Winslow is working with a non conbatant Red Cross team to assist refugees. Rachel is the daughter of a high ranking US government official, and uses her middle name rather than her last name to avoid attention. The Red Cross camp is next to a very dense jungle where there are rebel camps. Rachel's father contacts her to tell her military Black Hawks are coming to evacuate the camp. Max de Milles is a Naval medic. She is detailed to help evacuate the Red Cross group in South Smalia. As the Black Hawks land, they are attacked by rebels, and not everyone is able to board before they must take off. One of the military members is wounded, and Max and Rachel are among those left behind. Radclyffe tells an exciting story, as well as doing a beautiful job showing the growing feelings between Max and Rachel. She is also quite skilled at character development, and Max and Rachel are very much three dimensional women. When Max and Rachel reunite in the US, their feelings take fire, and there are some wonderful love scenes. This was anotheer great read from a master story teller.
