Format: CD
Not much to add to all the press already listed in the previous review. I think many people will come to the disc from O'Regan's previous effort, 'Scattered Rhymes': Scattered Rhymes.

Anyway, this neatly follows on from that stellar recording with the kind of music I've never heard before. It's fast, it's rhythmic, it's dense and textured - all the nuances of a symphony orchestra somehow parsed through voices and string instruments. The performances are 10/10.

Groundbreaking stuff!

HASH(0x9678b5dc) étoiles sur 5 The Ethereal Tariq O'Regan 17 octobre 2011
Par Grady Harp - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Look up the name Tarik O'Regan and he will be described as follows: 'Tarik O'Regan born 1 January 1978, London), is a British composer, partly of Algerian extraction. His compositions number over 90 and are partially represented on 22 recordings which have been recognised with two GRAMMY nominations. He is also the recipient of two British Composer Awards. As an academic, O'Regan has served on the Faculties of Columbia University as a Fulbright Chester Schirmer Fellow, The Radcliffe Institute of Harvard University as a Radcliffe Fellow, Yale University, Trinity College in the University of Cambridge and, since 2010, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton as Director's Visitor.' Facts - important to note, but facts.

What happens to the audience when they encounter the choral works of Tariq O'Regan is a mysterious connection with the spheres. His setting of the poetry of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda - 'Tal vez tenemos tiempo' ('Maybe we have time') is one of the most perfect weddings of music with words. The only other composer who has been able to find such a perfect respect for Neruda's poems is Peter Lieberson whose poems he set for his wife Lorraine Hunt Lieberson remain one of the most important works of the past decade.

The splendid choral ensemble - Conspirare conducted by Craig Hella Johnson - brings a richness to these eleven varied works of O'Regan. And while 'The Ecstasies' and 'The Triptych' may have been the reason for organizing this recital, the small pieces of Tarik O'Regan are as bright as glowing stars. This is a recital recording to cherish. Grady Harp, October 11

HASH(0x9678ba14) étoiles sur 5 Critical praise 5 septembre 2008
Par Sabrosa - Publié sur Amazon.com
"You absolutely should not hesitate to give this program a listen. The seven works...are not only significant and eminently worthy entries into the modern choral repertoire, but they also are accessible in the best sense of the word...the music immediately reveals itself and rewards careful, serious listening." "O'Regan's intentions and realization of the texts speak for themselves through artful, consistently engaging choral writing." "the performances are first rate--this choir has an established reputation for excellence and has taken to O'Regan's music as if it were created just for them (which some of it was!)...Don't miss this."
Sound Quality: 10 / Performance: 10
- David Vernier, CLASSICSTODAY.COM

"This music for chorus and strings is of unearthly beauty."
- Jeff Simon, THE BUFFALO NEWS

"[O'Regan's] music is virtuosic, impulsively careening toward maximum drama in his treatment of texts by Edgar Allan Poe and Pablo Neruda, often with simultaneous ideas in opposing keys...but so skillfully written for the choral medium that singers don't come close to losing their bearings."

- David Patrick Stearns, THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER

"Conspirare is one of America's leading vocal ensembles, and it's easy to hear why in these superb performances."
- Robert Levett, INTERNATIONAL RECORD REVIEW

"Mesmerizing and sublime, O'Regan's music layers voices with brilliant intricacy and he deftly combines airy melodies and subtle dissonances to a powerful effect. "
- Jeanne Claire van Ryzin, AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN

"Threshold of Grammy?...this is a recording worthy of attention. A single listen confirms...that this choir and composer are exquisitely matched. Conductor Craig Hella Johnson and his company of voices have the skill to voice all the colors in O'Regan's richly varied musical palette: the densely clustered voices that pull at one another in tense dissonance here and resolve in sumptuous harmonies there, the rhythms that rocket a song along or ease it into a blissful peace. Moreover, they have a feel for the material, for its drama and intensity and the deep spiritual dimension at its foundation. This is one meditation on mortality that's thrillingly alive."
- Robert Faires, THE AUSTIN CHRONICLE

HASH(0x9678b990) étoiles sur 5 Stunning - the perfect match! 14 septembre 2008

Music, performance, production, sound, innovation.

This re-defines contemporary music and modern choral performance.

Judging by this disc, 'Conspirare' is the finest choir working today and O'Regan the most individual composing voice.

It's a perfect match. This is GRAMMY material - don't wait for the awards though!

I don't know whether Conspirare is the Very Best Choir in the Entire World. For one thing, you'd have to compare them to Accentus and to the Danish Radio Choir and, frankly, you wouldn't come up with a dime's worth of difference in quality, so what's the point? At their level, it's like asking whether Superman could beat up Capt. Marvel. The important thing is, this is one amazing group.

Threshold of Night features music by the Algerian-Irish-British Tarik O'Regan, now living in New York City. The music aims for the intensity of meditation. The texts, held together by the threads of death, the after-life, and loss, are drawn from a wide range of writers and poetic traditions and uniformly excellent. You would think this a downer of an album, but its keynote is ecstasy. The music hums with energy, even in its quiet moments. O'Regan writes his own music in his own way, even though he appropriates musical devices from others. Minimalist ostinato gets rethought in the context of decidedly non-Minimalist music. He also has a penchant for chord-clusters, almost a cliche of contemporary choral writing, but they acquire a different expressive function in his music. Usually, they create a misty or fuzzy effect. O'Regan's sense of harmony is so keen, each note stands distinct in the chord. It's like looking up at the stars on a clear night. O'Regan also has a gift for a memorable (if not always hummable) tune, often Britten-like, though, believe me, you won't mistake one for the other. I've still got his phrase on Rumi's "Why then should I be afraid? I shall lie in my grave to rise an angel blest" caroming off the walls of my brain. My favorite work on the disc, "The Ecstasies Above," sets most of Poe's "Israfel." For those of you who think Poe is merely the poetic kitschmeister who wrote "The Raven," this poem will surprise you, as will its setting, fully as wonderful as Bernstein's in Songfest.

The one niggle I have is that O'Regan sometimes writes in such dense layers (one piece uses a double choir AND strings) that words get obliterated. I couldn't follow even with the particular text in front of me. On the other hand, at least sometimes, this is deliberate. The setting of Fletcher's "Care, charming Sleepe," for example, features the buzz of voices inside your head as you fall asleep. Terrific.

O'Regan needs a top-notch choir. This stuff isn't for high-school glee clubs. Conspirare has mastered all the basics of choral singing: rhythm, attack, pitch, blend, ensemble, tone, diction. Furthermore, they recorded in the Troy Savings Bank, a spectacular acoustic. However, what sets them apart, ultimately, is the expressiveness of their singing. They almost make you forget that they *are* singing - the communication is that direct. Craig Johnson has created a fantastic instrument, as beautiful as Israfel's lyre.
