5.0 étoiles sur 5Solid Package, good deal6 avril 2011

I chose this guide because it comes with both a text and the audio CD's. I also purchased Colloquial Catalan by Ibarz and Ibarz (book only). I bought this guide because I wanted an audio CD to practice listening and speaking. I found that just the book alone is not really enough, or at least for what I wanted. Personally I prefer this one, Teach Yourself Catalan. This package was much less expensive than other packages that include both text and audio. One caveat in the text is that the pronunciation guide is written for British speakers, so native American speakers should be careful with the book alone. The included CD's are a little cheesy, but great. This package is no substitute for a real class or an immersion, but It's a great way to start learning basic Catalan. Plenty of common vocab is included along with conversations that a traveler is likely to encounter. Pretty fast paced, but that would be expected for any self-taught language course.

I was not impressed with the format of this book. In attempting to avoid 'jargon' the book fails to coherently explain parts of speech or conjugations- making much more work for the reader as you must figure it out on your own. I also found the audio very difficult and not intuitive. I've used other 'teach yourself" style books in the past and would highly recommend the " teach yourself (language) in 30 days" books, they are much more helpful although I don't believe they carry Catalan.

2.0 étoiles sur 5CD's are useless without the book5 mai 2012

I purchased this package hoping to be able to learn some Catalan before my trip to Valencia by listening to CD's while driving to work. Unfortunately, the CD's are totally useless without the book, which I cannot read while driving. The recording assumes that you are looking at the book while you are listening to the CD, so it does not explain anything that is in print, like what the individual words mean. It just gives you a bunch of dialogs at full speed without any explanations at all, and expects you to understand them, and follows up by asking you about the content of the dialog. For instance, you hear dialog which sounds like !@#$&*(*#&$_!(@*#&!$@#$@%!)&$^#!@*$(%^&*((*&&, and then you are asked "Have you noticed how you answer the phone in Catalan?" or "What did Tim order?" Well, how can you possibly answer if you cannot understand anything!!?
The people recording the dialog also tend to mumble a lot (perhaps it's supposed to sound that way, but I have no way of telling. They way "Tim" mumbles is particularly annoying) and it is very difficult to discern what they said. Compared to other language sets in the Teach Yourself series, this set is not well structured or thought out. I am going to try the Talk Now! set next.

I didn't get far with this course They talked very fast and half the time as I repeated the phrases, I sounded good but didn't have a clue what I was saying. I didn't want to be an 'ugly Anerican', but I wish I had spent my money and time brushing up on Spanish instead.

This is only useful if you can sit Dow n and study the book as you listen to the CD's. I have not had time to do that, but have been listening as I drive, instead. It is more like Portuguese than Spanish, and requires more attention than I have been able to give.
