OK read 19 août 2004
Par J. Guthrie - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Poche Achat vérifié
On the basis of reading the reviews for the book, I decided to give it a read. I wish I had passed on it. The author just asks the reader to suspend belief far far too much.

- a very famous circus performer will drop everything to "go undercover" as a nurse to spy on her father's enemy when she hasn't spoken to her father in years after he killed her beloved horse.

- a straightlaced Marquis will completely act against his lifelong ideals and beliefs when he meets a woman who is outspoken and who is stacked.

- the Marquis is kidnapped from his own home with Bow Street runners in the house and on the property; but, the only person who sees the kidnapping is the erstwhile undercover nurse.

- the Marquis' cousin - a rakehell Earl - will encourage the Marquis to unbend and live a little by marrying a servant.

- the circus performer's father will immediately give up his quest for vengance when his daughter rides to his rescue.

...and the list goes on and on.

A pleasant enough read; but, falls into the area of an ok read that you might do better to check it out from your local library or buy it used.

Unconvincing story but fun read 3 mai 2004
Par S. Reader - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Poche
Very funny with an unusual heroine and plenty of atmosphere. My reason for not rating it at 5 stars is primarily it's unbelieveable premise and resolution. The heir to a dukedom marrying a trick horse rider? Sure. Nevertheless, Alex's totally priggishness matched with Mary's say-and-do-anything openness is ready-made for laughs galore. Britton's earthy sense of humor gets a real workout here. Still Britton manages some poignancy with Mary's feelings of inadequacy.
The other area of discord (apart from the unlikeliness of the pairing and the unbelieveableness of Alex's willingness to give up everything, including any sort of livelihood, for her) is Alex's daughter; she serves merely as a way to get Mary into, and back into, Alex's life. The brat has no other usefulness.
If I could give 3 & 1/2 stars, I would. But Britton's LOL humor and unusual heroine force me into giving this book 4 stars.

A Wonderful Author! 23 mai 2004

I'm back on Amazon to write my second review ever and once again it's for a Pamela Britton book. I discovered this author by accident and all I can say is THANK GOODNESS. If you, like me, have become tired of some of the "tried and true" romance authors out there, try Pamela Britton. If you, like me, like to laugh out loud and then cry, try Pamela Britton.
Tempted is a book that held me from the first page. Mary is a heroine who will make you laugh. When she arrives at the hero's doorstep, you'll wonder how two people from such different worlds could ever get together. But that's the fun of the story. Watching Mary captivate Alex was some of the best story telling I've read in recent years. Wow. I am sincerely impressed.
Scandal is next and I can't wait!!
By the way, I noticed that one reviewer said the book "fizzles." I don't know how much merrit you should put in a reviewer who reads all five of an authors books when she clearly doesn't like her work only to come to Amazon to say nasty things. Seems supicious to me.

Superb! Awesome! Loved It! 2 janvier 2004
Par M. Rondeau - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Poche
Setting - Early 1800's(?) London --- Alexander Drummond, the Marquis of Warrick, is no saint, yet being descended from a long line of rakes, he has vowed to try to change that perception and does his best to not dally with the fairer sex, nor accost maids in his employ. Now he needs a woman! He needs an extraordinary woman to act as nursemaid to his hellion of a daughter. Enter Mary Callahan - and believe you me - let the howling begin! Ms. Britton has crafted one of the most memorable, outlandish, impertinent and lovable heroines I have ever seen!
Nothing in Alexander, heir to a dukedom's noble upbringing could have prepared him for the irreverent wise-cracking, but luscious looking applicant for the job. Armed with a fake letter of recommendation and sent by her father to infiltrate the Marquis' home Charlotte was doing all in her power to blow the interview, simply by being herself. It took me a while to read through this interview as I was rolling on the floor from laughing so much! Charlotte, had no intention of taking the job until she found out what it paid. At the unheard of amount of a pound a week, she just couldn't turn that down, figuring she could stay on for at least a couple of weeks. What she didn't figure on was falling for her employer!
Ms Britton has written an absolutely outrageously funny book that simply takes my breath away. Fans of Pamela Britton - you simply MUST get this book! It surely is one of THE BEST books I have read this year. Written with tongue-in-cheek, I swear I think I must have laughed out loud on practically every page...this book was an absolute hoot! But lest you think it was pure comedy, you would be wrong, for it surely was a LOVE story and believe me this is one that you simply MUST READ. You'll laugh, you'll cry at the impossibility of the match vs. true love, and it will definitely make you cry and sigh with pleasure at the end! BRAVO Ms. Britton this was a superb book that is definitely going to be on my keeper shelf!!!!

Run and Buy, Promptly! 28 mars 2004
Par Jennifer S. Kelley - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Poche
Anybody who is a fan of romance novels, particularly Regencies really should try it out. The characters are so well-written that they do feel like friends you've known forever, you care about them and become completely wrapped up in their world. Britton's use of different dialects was *stunning* (and for that alone, makes the book worth its weight in gold). Britton is funny as hell, but proves her mettle as an author by exploring the characters flaws and psyche, resulting in some really heart-breaking moments.
What is especially well-done is that Britton really pushes the traditional boundaries of the genre.... It's everything you want and love in a romance, but not staid and routine. The characters and plot become so much more developed, and are so deftly handled, I'd give this book 6 stars if I could. It's going up on the bookshelf of "favorites" for me (and I'm picky about what goes on that particular shelf).
While reading this, I became particularly enamored of the cousin, the very wicked but sensual Rein is apparently getting his own book. I, for one, cannot wait!!
I haven't read Britton's other books, but am ordering them pronto.
