A few years back I discovered Jay Heinrichs through an online article. After reading the article, I quickly purchased the Kindle version of the original "Thank You for Arguing."

The original was thoroughly entertaining, and I learned so much from it that I decided we needed to include rhetoric and logic in our high school homeschool curriculum. This summer I purchased a logic curriculum designed for homeschoolers, but was highly disappointed with it. It was so terrible, in fact, I couldn't even bring myself to resell it or give it away. I was tempted to burn it lest someone else get their hands on it.

At this point I decided to return to the book which inspired this addition to our homeschool curriculum and was pleasantly surprised to learn that there was a new edition filled with new chapters, more examples, and an "Argument Lab" where you can practice what you've learned - perfect for homeschoolers!

I got a physical copy of the book this time and was excited to learn that there is a complimentary website ( where there are online quizzes and additional resources for educators. This book is an excellent addition to any homeschool library.

2,500 years ago Aristotle taught us that Rhetoric is the art of finding in any circumstance the available means of persuasion. 6 years ago, with the release of the original version of Thank You For Arguing, Jay Heinrichs introduced me to this largely forgotten art and it made me stronger in my career as a sales rep and in my marriage. Today, Jay released this book with even more up to date examples of rhetoric in use today by some of our most persuasive speakers from Homer Simpson to President Obama.
The Art of Rheortic, or being able to argue instead of fight, of finding the advantageous or persuading others to agree with us is perhaps one of the most important and overlooked skills in our country today. I've yet to find a book on this topic that is more fun to read (anyone who has attempted Aristotle knows its more rewarding than fun and easy to read). Jay is a master at teaching an ancient art in a modern way with humorous examples that are relevant to the world we live in today.
If you have the first version and are asking yourself rather or not the new version is worth the cash, the answer is definitely yes! The new chapters on apologizing and Obama are worth the money alone! Jay has also used updated examples and perhaps coolest of all, he has added an argument lab to practice what you have learned.
Bottom line (literally) this is one of the most important books I've read! Buy it and Thank You for Arguing!

In a previous life I was an academic, where my training was as a classicist and student of ancient rhetoric, particularly in the speeches of Cicero and Demosthenes. My hobbies make me an avid follower of political rhetoric and debates. My professional life places me as a practitioner of modern business rhetoric, where I help a leading professional services firm to tailor our messages for prospective clients and win new business. Wearing all three hats at once, let me confess: Jay Heinrichs has written the book I wished I had been able to write before him. For several years, I have recommended it constantly, to friends, to employees, to colleagues in business, and to students visiting from my alma mater. _Thank You For Arguing_ is without doubt the most accessible introduction to millenia's worth of accumulated wisdom about persuasion. What's more, it's wildly entertaining. Jay writes with an engaging voice, self-deprecating humor, clear examples, modern and ancient parallels, and practical tips. For those of us who are green with envy about what Jay achieved, the news gets worse. There was always the chance that the 1st edition would age, its examples become stale, its few soft spots remain unaddressed (aliquando bonus dormitat Homerus), the book fall from use, and something newer and better would be required. But now Jay has written a 2nd edition, a substantial revision that addresses comments and corrections from readers and rhetoricians through the years, updates cultural and political examples, covers further topics not found in the first edition, and most significantly, provides an "argument lab" (in the Appendix and in an online tool) that lets you practice and play with the concepts in the book. So, for a good long time to come, _Thank You for Arguing_ should be the standard. It belongs on the bookshelf of every student in a university rhetoric survey course, every speechwriter and political strategist, and every business writer and salesperson. Buy it, give it to your kids, your representatives, your marketing team, your preacher - anyone who cares about convincing other human beings. Envy aside, congratulations to Jay on a fantastic 2nd edition! It's well worth every cent.

My wife got this book for me, knowing it's the kind of subject I'm interested in. I must say, I can understand why this book has been used in college courses and Advanced Placement classes in high school. It's a comprehensive treatment of rhetoric, its forms and techniques, and it is written in a light, understandable style that is much more accessible to the contemporary reader than most "classic" books would be.
The author gives many good examples of the different rhetorical techniques, tying them to the kind of situations a modern reader would have some experience of, like how he convinced his teenaged son to bring him some toothpaste, or the advice he got on decorum from a suit salesman.
I particularly liked the emphasis on arguing, rather than fighting, and the idea that arguing should be persuasive, in the end. The appendices (Argument Lab, The Tools the Glossary, Chronology and Further Readings) are especially helpful for seeing how well one understands some of the concepts and for reminding one of the formal terms and their definitions.
The one small quibble I had was that I sometimes found the book a little repetitive, but it truly is a small quibble, and really a matter of personal taste.

Yes, my title sounds like an infomercial. But, seriously, I just used a few of the tactics in this book--identity strategy, code grooming, switching to the future tense--to land a new client. And some day, I'm sure, the new chapter in this second edition on how to screw up, not apologize, and STILL come out ahead will come in handy.

While I don't share Heinrichs' geeky passion for the ancient Greek art of rhetoric, I now have great respect for it and its power. It's worth knowing.
