Revue de presse

“The science... reads like the best of Michael Crichton. The machinations of government read like the best of David Baldacci. And the action and thrills read like the best of Clive Cussler. Rollins takes the best of all of these and creates an amazing thriller unlike any other.” (Associated Press on Bloodline on THE EYE OF GOD)

” . . . this is your summer beach read writ large.” (New York Journal of Books on THE EYE OF GOD)

“Rollins has done it again. Real history and science play a key role in all of the action, which never wanes. Amid all of the chaos are some terrific characters who get a chance to shine. Definitely keep an eye out for this one.” (Library Journal (starred review) on THE EYE OF GOD)

“The book has everything the genre demands: Nazis, ancient maps, alien life forms, a ticking nuclear clock, and exotic, deadly beasts. Rollins makes it all believable, and ties everything together in a satisfying climax that hints at more adventures to come.” (Publishers Weekly on THE 6TH EXTINCTION)

“This is another fast-paced mixture of real science, real history, and wild speculation. For speed freaks (narrative speed, that is), Rollins always delivers the goods. Readers, start your engines.” (Booklist on THE 6TH EXTINCTION)

“Adventure, history, science, and technology-sheer perfection from an author who is used to giving exactly that every time he tells a tale!” (Suspense Magazine on THE 6TH EXTINCTION)

“Best-selling author Rollins has again crafted an excellent nail-biting thriller that all action adventure readers will love. Rollins always provides author notes with the science and historical facts behind his stories, and the creatures the team encounter are frighteningly possible!” (Library Journal (starred review) on THE 6TH EXTINCTION)

“...[I]mmediately brought to mind the works of Michael Crichton at his best. With the constant action supported by more than a helping of science, Rollins constructs a rare story of the fantastic that feels real.” (Examiner.com on THE 6TH EXTINCTION)

“[This] is everything-but-the-kitchen-sink storytelling at its most unpredictable.” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram on THE 6TH EXTINCTION)

“Another winner. Rollins takes truth and stretches it to create an intense and believable plot, combining pulsating adventure, intriguing history, and cutting-edge advances in science and technology.” (Crimespree Magazine on THE 6TH EXTINCTION)

“The 6th Extinction is a thrilling novel that not only entertains, but makes the reader think a great deal.” (Huffington Post on THE 6TH EXTINCTION)

Présentation de l'éditeur

A remote military research station sends out a frantic distress call, ending with a chilling final command: Kill us all! Personnel from the neighboring base rush in to discover everyone already dead-and not just the scientists, but every living thing for fifty square miles is annihilated: every animal, plant, and insect, even bacteria.

The land is entirely sterile-and the blight is spreading.

To halt the inevitable, Commander Gray Pierce and Sigma must unravel a threat that rises out of the distant past, to a time when Antarctica was green and all life on Earth balanced upon the blade of a knife. Following clues from an ancient map rescued from the lost Library of Alexandria, Sigma will discover the truth about an ancient continent, about a new form of death buried under miles of ice.

From millennia-old secrets out of the frozen past to mysteries buried deep in the darkest jungles of today, Sigma will face its greatest challenge to date: stopping the coming extinction of mankind.

But is it already too late?

En savoir plus sur l'auteur

JAMES ROLLINS is the New York Times bestselling author of international thrillers, translated into more than forty languages. His Sigma series has been lauded as one of the "top crowd pleasers" (New York Times) and one of the "hottest summer reads" (People Magazine). In each novel, acclaimed for its originality, Rollins unveils unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets--and he does it all at breakneck speed and with stunning insight.

James Rollins decided to become a writer as a boy immersed in the scientific adventures of Doc Savage, the wonders of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and pulps such as The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger. He honed his storytelling skills early, spinning elaborate tales that were often at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters.

Although his talent emerged and grew, writing was not James' original profession. Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, he embarked on a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary. This hands-on knowledge of medicine and science helps shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins books apart.

The exotic locales of James Rollins novels have emerged as a hybrid between imagination, research, and James' extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, as well as New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Recent travel includes book tours and stops across the country and several European nations to meet readers and give talks, seminars, and media interviews.

In recent years, much of James' travel has involved meeting readers in small and large groups, at writing and fan conferences, and even aboard seagoing "seminars." James' mentoring temperament and coaching skills have made him a sought-out writing instructor and guest speaker for workshops, symposia, conventions, and other forums throughout the country. He is among the core faculty of the annual Maui Writer's Conference and Retreat.

James Rollins is the author of seven thrillers in the bestselling Sigma Force series (Sandstorm, Map of Bones, Black Order, The Judas Strain, The Last Oracle, The Doomsday Key, and The Devil Colony, Bloodline); six individual adventure thrillers; the blockbuster movie novelization, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull; and the Jake Ransom middle grade series (Jake Ransom and the Skull King's Shadow, Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx, and more coming in 2013). The ninth Sigma Force adventure, The Eye of God, is coming in Summer 2013.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 "These go to eleven." 12 août 2014
Par Susan Tunis - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Relié
In his author's note, James Rollins acknowledges that The 6th Extinction is his tenth novel in the Sigma series. He comments, "Knowing that milestone was upon us, I thought I'd use this opportunity to tease to the past." And that he does--the way past. One of the major characters in the book harkens all the way back to Rollins' debut novel. It was a MOST unexpected reappearance!

I think with anniversaries and milestones in mind, Mr. Rollins wanted to make this installment a special one. You know how in Spinal Tap they had the amp that went up to eleven? The 6th Extinction goes up to eleven. He basically includes all the stuff his readers show up for--cutting-edge science, history, exotic locales, action, adventure, monsters--and delivers, well... more. BTW, did you catch that reference to monsters? I know he's not the only guy writing this sort of thing, but in The 6th Extinction, Rollins really reminds us why so many of us fell in love with his work, right from the get go, and just how good he is at what he does. Back off, impostors.

So, I'm pretty much eschewing the plot summary this time around. It's all too much fun to discover on your own. But I do want to single out one element for special praise. I read so many of these thrillers where there's some sort of mad genius plotting some variation on the end of the world. For instance, the old "we need to cull the human race due to overpopulation/lack of resources" storyline. Rollins has done it; everyone has done it. There's an evil genius in this book, too--but what he wants, and how he proposes to achieve it--that, my friends, is nothing I've ever seen before. Now, by my count, this guy has written 29 novels (total, under two different names) and he's still coming up with fresh ideas from a seemingly endless supply. How can you not be impressed?

I opened this review referencing Rollins' author's note, and I shall close with another quote: "Additionally, in this new book, I also wanted to acknowledge what's to come, with some big changes hinted at in these same pages--because Sigma's greatest and boldest adventures are still on the horizon." After a wildly entertaining decade, what better promise could a reader ask for?

4.0 étoiles sur 5 The tepui of Dr. Moreau 17 août 2014
Par NewDiane - Publié sur Amazon.com

James Rollins is adept at taking true history, science and politics, and putting a thrilling (and deadly) spin on them. Since his writing style is to take the reader on a wild ride - usually through several countries - and put his protagonists within one hair's-breadth of dire peril after another, there is a restriction on how rounded his characters can be. There are the villains and their henchmen, the innocent and not-so-innocent victims, the ultra-secret government agencies, huge and heartless corporations, and the beleaguered team of good guys - in this case, Sigma Force. I'm used to that and don't expect too much other than the usual gorgeous/brilliant/skilled women and dedicated/brilliant/lethal men. There are some anomalies in this book as well. For example, in one chapter, a man has his leg amputated above the knee, but a little later on the doctors are thinking they can save the knee joint. However, ignoring stereotypical characters and a few editorial oversights, this is an excellent book. It hits North America, South America and Antarctica, covers bio-engineering, synthetic DNA, indestructible organisms, and the possibility that some lunatic will trigger an apocalyptic extinction of everything, including humans, for whatever creed they espouse. I especially like the afterword, in which the author points out the real basis for his fiction. This is a strictly plot-driven thriller, with a breathless pace. I have all of Rollins' books, and this is a worthy addition to his shelf.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Jim's best book so far. Rollins does great Monsters. Highly Recommended. 2 octobre 2014
Par John D. Trudel - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Relié
This is perhaps Jim's best book so far, and I've read most of them. Rollins is the undisputed Mystro of Monsters, and this book is his Magnum Opus. He outdoes himself with myriad monsters, from microscopic viruses to Mega fauna, and with legions of dangerous creatures running amok on three continents.

His writing seems to get better with each novel. His plots are multi-threaded and complex, but simple to follow and entertaining to read. So many Thrillers have cardboard (almost cartoon like) superheroes and thin villains, but his characters are understandable (if sometimes weird) human beings with plausible feelings, limitations, motivations, and fears.

Best of all for me is that Jim does meticulous research and he gets the details right. I write Thrillers myself and some of my books touch on bioweapons and have settings in Antarctica. "Terra Australis Incognita" is a compelling setting for Thriller novelists. I've done a huge amount of historical and political research on this cold, lonely, and hostile land, but still learned useful things from reading this book.

I characterize this novel as wild ride into ecoterrorism, with a huge dose of edgy science and fascinating history. The work that most comes to mind for contrast is Michael Crichton's 2004 "State of Fear," a book that got him death threats and perhaps blacklisted by Hollywood. Both have settings in Antarctica, both have politics and science, and both are excellent novels. My personal view is that in 50 years, State of Fear, not Jurassic Park, will be hailed as Crichton's best work.

State of Fear

Not that I agree with all Jim's premises, of course. My views on climate alarmism are well-known and probably differ greatly from his. I'm skeptical of politicized "Global Warming," but not the science of studying climate and weather. In truth there HAS been global warming and also global cooling. Compared to 100 years ago (a mini-ice age where Niagara Falls froze solid), the planet is slightly warmer. Compared to 1,000 years ago (when Vikings visited Greenland in winter with open boats and grew wine grapes) it is much cooler. For the past 18 years, and much to the embarrassment of Al Gore, there has been no warming. Temperatures have flat-lined.

But a novel is a novel, and this difference in views does not in the least stop me from saying this book deserves "5-stars." It is an excellent novel and a fun read. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

John D. Trudel writes Award Winning Thrillers including Raven's Run, Soft Target, Privacy Wars, and God's House.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A good addition to the Sigma Force series 20 août 2014
Par Devon Greene - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle|Achat vérifié
James Rollins continues the exciting, dangerous adventures of the "scientists with guns" covert team, Sigma Force. In this novel, he looks at the cutting edge of genetic modification, mass extinction, and the fringes of the conservation movement. Some of the side members of Sigma take a more central role in this novel, and I didn't see as much development in certain "main" characters I've grown attached to over the last decade. This isn't my favorite Sigma Force novel to date, but it's a very enjoyable read. As always, I love the notes at the end of the book discussing the truth and fiction of the science, history, and technology used in Rollins' work.

If you're a fan of Rollins work, I highly recommend this book. If you're new to him, I'd start at the beginning of the series or even try some of his standalone novels.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Rollins comes back to earth with a story you can follow and actually want to follow. 17 août 2014
Par lucky Spot - Publié sur Amazon.com

I didn't finish the last Sigma book because it was so out there that i gave up.This one is possible and totally plausible and except for one of the main characters being SHOT AGAIN AS HE DOES IN EVERY BOOK I would have given this 5 stars. You don't get lost in theory's and whacky bulsh*t that you eventually don't care about as in some of his last few books.I won't mention any of the plot because well DUH that would give it away.If you want an easy read that won't hurt your brain and actually make you feel like you need to take notes for the test at the end of the book then this is for you. He's not on par with Michael Crichton and that can sometimes be a good thing because he could get a little to smart for his own good-in my opinion. And oh yeah my dog told me tell you there is a dog involved in the story as well!! So have fun
