C'est un beau roman, beaucoup de rebondissements et finalement une histoire simple mais que je recommande.
Ce livre se lit très vite , quand on est pris dans l'histoire on ne veut plus s'arrêter.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 The ending could have been better 12 mai 2014
Par Best Crime Books - Publié sur
Cally Taylor is certainly not new to the writing scene and has written two romantic comedy books under that name; however The Accident is her first in the suspense/thriller genre. The synopsis sounded pretty good and I was looking forward to getting stuck in. The story opens up with Sue Jackson visiting her daughter as she lies helplessly in a coma. Sue and her husband Brian have no idea why their teenage daughter Charlotte deliberately stepped in front of a bus resulting in her current state.

The writing was great from the very beginning and I found myself very drawn into the story. Sue is convinced that her daughter would not have deliberately stepped in front of a bus and is determined to get to the bottom of it. What follows is a woman’s determination to get to the truth no matter what the cost. The tension was pretty high especially as the book progresses. In addition to this storyline we get to read chapters of Sue’s past which goes a long was to explaining her current state of mind. Cally Taylor has gone all out to put you in the shoes of a Mother who is distraught and has to find the truth, and I think she has done that magnificently.

The past stories involving Sue and her ex James made you question the current situation even more. At times I even questioned Sue’s mental state wondering if her imagination was going into overdrive or if the things she had seen and heard were real. In just under a day and a half I had got to the last part of the book, but must admit the final few chapters left me feeling a little disappointed. I think the ending smacked of convenience too much for my liking and I was a little annoyed by that. With that to one side there is no way I could have rated it less than 4 as the writing and suspense was certainly up where it should have been. I for one will be looking out for future works by Cally in this genre and look forward to seeing what she comes up with next.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Never dismiss gut instinct... 24 avril 2014
Par Cheryl M-M - Publié sur
It might just be me, but I thought the husband Brian was a complete tosser. He wasn't supportive, he was condescending and in his own way abusive.
When you make someone feel small, insignificant or make them feel as if they are losing their mind then that counts as emotional abuse in my book. Brian is fully aware of her past, and instead of understanding her fears, flashbacks and insecurities he treats her as if she belongs in the looney bin.
Her daughter is in a coma does he expect her to dance an Irish jig and throw a party? It is only natural for Sue to be emotionally distraught.

Sue knows deep down inside that something just isn't right and she is determined to follow the niggling feeling of doubt all the way to the truth, whether the truth is good or bad. Everyone is so busy dismissing her gut instincts that no person is actually looking for the reason Charlotte chose to do what she did.

At the same time Sue experiences something nearly all parents of teenagers go through, realizing that their child has secrets from them and is in the process of building a path of independence, which ultimately usually leads to them leaving the nest. Finding out that your child not only has secrets is one thing; however finding out that those secrets might be endangering their life is another matter entirely.
I don’t think Sue understands how her past relationships have influenced her behaviour towards life and the people she loves. Her anxiety, fears and paranoia have been projected on to her daughter, ergo resulting in the daughter hiding things from her parents.

The Accident is actually a very realistic account of the repercussions of abuse even years after the abuse has taken place. It is often always an underlying issue for those that have experienced it and can affect all future relationships and dynamics.

The story also sheds light on the fact that some abusers, especially in domestic abuse cases, never give up. Some of them perceive the abused to be their possession and will persevere in their destructive tactics till the bitter end. Often that end means death to the abused.

Society still doesn't take that threat seriously enough, which statistics clearly show. If anything this story is a great way to enhance the fact that society, government, law enforcement and we the people should be doing more to help stop the abusers.
Far too often someone out there says ‘I think he(or she) is going to kill me one day’ and far too often that person is or was right. We need to listen to them before and not after the fact, when it is too late to save them.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Chillingly believable! 25 avril 2014

When I saw the tagline for this one ‘Keeping this secret was killing her’; I knew I had to read it. My curiosity was immediately piqued and I wanted to know what secret and how was it killing her and I wanted to know it now! If you love nosing into family secrets, then this one is for you!

First Line of The Accident:

My Thoughts on The Accident:

This books throws you straight in at the deep end. Fifteen year old Charlotte is in coma and we already know a secret put her there. From page one, the conspiracy theories were swirling around in my head and the more I read, the deeper I sank into this puzzling mystery. Everyone has their secrets but in this family some of those secrets are deadly dangerous.

I love psychological thrillers that focus on family settings as the mundane backdrop can make the chilling events seem even more threatening. I did find that I worked out the mystery pretty quickly but I also had sufficient doubt to keep it all seem really interesting.

There are two timelines; present day and early nineties. Susan is the main character in the nineties storyline and it captures her slow descent into the trap of over possessive man. From insta-love to slowly controlling to abusive on every level, this relationship just gave me the shudders. It felt distressingly real and as every alarm bell clanged loudly from the pages, I wanted to tell her run for her life before she was unable to run.

And the past events are intertwining with the current day events; spreading a shadow of fear and panic. At times I was on edge reading, my heart pounding nervously at even the ordinary events as I was waiting, waiting, waiting for the terror to unleash.

The current day story is told in first person perspective from Charlotte’s mothers point of view. Sue is struggling to discover how her daughter ended up in a coma and suspects everyone and does her own snooping to try and find out just why and how this could have happened. She is tense and apprehensive but becomes brave and determined on her daughters behalf.

Overall, I loved how the two storylines crank up the tension and hold it there. The story builds up with lots of layers and when the past and present merge, it becomes even more engrossing. Even when the past seemed obvious, you still had no idea how it would all end and I flew through the book at high speed as that was the only way my nerves could handle it.

A rock solid debut novel and I will be stalking C L Taylor to check when the next book comes out.

Who should read The Accident?

Highly recommended to those who like tension, believability and lots of chills from their suspense novels.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 If you like thrillers you'll love this. 23 avril 2014
Par Diana J Febry - Publié sur
A tense, atmospheric thriller.
Sue's daughter is in a coma after inexplicably walking out in front of a bus. Sue believes her daughter's life is in danger and there are non-medical reasons why she is not waking up. Her investigation into her daughter's recent life is interspersed with flashbacks to an abusive relationship Sue endured in her twenties. With references to Sue's previous "episodes" of paranoia and false accusations, even those closest to her, believe it is all in her head. Or is it ... If you like psychological thrillers you will love this.
