1952. It is more than a decade since humiliation at Dunkirk brought an end to Britain's war and the beginning of an uneasy peace with Hitler.
In Africa, the swastika flies from the Sahara to the Indian Ocean. Gleaming autobahns bisect the jungle, jet fighters patrol the skies. The brutal presence of the SS is visible everywhere. Now, however, the demonic plans of Walter Hochburg - architect of Nazi Africa - threaten Britain's ailing colonies.
In England, ex-mercenary Burton Cole is offered one last contract. Burton jumps at the chance to settle an old score with Hochburg, despite the protests of the woman he loves. If Burton fails, unimaginable horrors will be unleashed in Africa. No one - black or white - will be spared.
But when his mission turns to disaster, Burton is forced to flee for his life. His flight takes him from the unholy killing ground of Kongo to SS slave camps and on to war-torn Angola, finally reaching its thrilling climax in a conspiracy that leads to the dark heart of the Afrika Reich itself.
Guy Saville combines meticulous research with edge-of-the seat suspense to produce a superb novel of alternate history. (20110129)

A fascinating premise,

I have often wondered what the world would have become had some of the evil geniuses succeeded in their ambitious plans to totally control the world. What if Napoleon had succeeded? Or Hitler. Or what if Shaka had lived to a ripe old age? Or what could have happened further had Cecil Rhodes lived another ten or twenty years; could he have completed the railway line from Cape Town to Cairo?Guy Saville did a good job with this. well-written, character-rich story; with a plot that mirrors a lot of what went on and is still going on in Africa, even though we might have to substitute the Reich with other powers like France. It echoes a lot from the book Disciples of Fortune and other books that touched on the Francafrique and the machinations that are keeping the people with the evil dispositions in power in Africa. Le point de départ de cette uchronie est bien trouvé: et si l'Allemagne hitlérienne avait imposé une pax germanica au Royaume-Uni, après que la France ait été vaincue en 1940 et que les Etats-Unis aient refusé de s'impliquer dans le conflit. L'Afrique française et belge serait passée sous pavillon allemand, et aurait été livrée à l'administration des SS. Seuls quelques résistants subsisteraient aux franges (portugaises) de ce vase empire du mal.Dans ce paysage inquiétant et étouffant, Guy Saville place une histoire où la vendetta personnelle d'un héros solitaire le dispute à l'espionnage. L'histoire est bien menée, quoique les rebondissements finissent par devenir improbables. Le personnage principal est une sorte de Jack Bauer avant l'heure, qui survit à tout... L'auteur se complaît parfois dans une description de l'ultra-violence difficilement soutenable, même à l'écrit, et peu indispensable à la progression du récit. Cela n'a pas la finesse d'un Fatherland de Robert Harris. En fait, ce livre ferait un excellent script de film. Comme roman, c'est plus discutable.
