Description de l'ouvrage

14 mai 2013

The first book to explain the new world of alternative investing, showing how anyone can use nontraditional options to significantly increase returns and lower risks

The world's elite investors have long relied on alternative investments to produce superior returns. Until now, these strategies were the exclusive purview of institutions and the superwealthy, but today any informed investor can play the same game.

A rainbow of investment options—timber, start-ups, master limited partnerships (MLPs), hedged strategies, managed futures, infrastructure, peer-to-peer lending, farmland, and dozens of other nontraditional strategies—can provide dramatically better gains, with less total risk, than the standard choices. In The Alternative Answer, Bob Rice, Bloomberg TV's Alternative Investments Editor, leads an entertaining and easy- to-understand tour of this world, and suggests specific alternative investments for all four key "jobs" of a portfolio: safely generating more current income, decreasing risks of economic shocks, significantly increasing long-term profits, and protecting purchasing power over time.

Regardless of experience or net worth, readers will learn exactly how to substantially improve investment performance—in the same way that the world's best investors already do. Stocks and bonds alone aren't nearly enough. Investors need an alternative answer and now they have it.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Accesible (& entertaining!) read loaded with practical advice 16 mai 2013

I completely agree with the reviewer below who said not to let the accessibility of the writing fool you--it's super educational, and written in the same style that fans of Bob's will be used to hearing from him on Bloomberg (I watch him fairly often and reading the book felt like he was talking to me; it was great). Bob's advice (and practical application examples) made so much sense that several times I found myself scratching my head and thinking, "Huh, why haven't I ever thought of it like that?" Definitely the latest must-read.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Alternative Investing Explained 16 mai 2013

I saw this guy on Bloomberg TV last week while waiting in line in a coffee shop. He sounded incredibly knowledgable about Alternative Investing so I ordered a copy of The Alternative Answer. If you are interested in getting into Alternatives but new to the game (like me), I highly recommend this book. It is very well written, not intimidating at all and is LOADED with strategies and insights. There is also a website listed on the back flap ([...]) which has hundreds of videos of him explaining Alternatives. The book and the website are both great educational tools!

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Could be hazardous to your wealth 12 octobre 2013

This book is "information" packed, but it doesn't have enough information about any of the investments to make a good decision about them or to execute a strategy.

It's practically a textbook example of "how to lie with charts", because if you look closely at the charts you'll read the opposite message of what he tells you the chart means. For instance, the chart on page 22 shows the returns of hedge funds vs. stocks and fixed income. The best perfoming hedge funds come out far aheard, but the median funds don't do much better than the conventional investments, and the worse hedge funds do much worse.

There's a rather interesting argument about how hedge funds can use leverage to get a risk/return ratio better than the "efficient frontier", but he doesn't seem to understand it because his explanation is garbled. He talks a bit about the Sharpe ratio, but not at all about the problems of the Sharpe ratio, particularly when it comes to systemic risk. There's no talk about volatility trading, which is one of the hottest games going at the moment.

The book is also disappointing because it fails to talk about the wide range of ETF and ETN products that are coming on the market, many of which let you bet on alternatives and some of which could give hedge fund performance with lower fees (such as VQT)

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Educational, but not deployable 9 juin 2013

While an enjoyable and lively read, I felt empty handed at the end. I would have liked lists of investment and funds. Nokt recommendations per se, but representative examples of the illustrated investment classes.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Well written & Interesting read but.... 21 juin 2013

While educational, highly readable and quite current I came away with these three thoughts.

1. The strategy deployed by the Yale Endowment was published in 2000 and since then other institutional portfolio managers have tried to duplicate its results to little success. Some may have done better with an S&P 500 fund.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/rickferri/2012/04/16/the-curse-of-the-yale-model/

2. A "panoramic portfolio" requires the individual investor to successfully identify and retain several active fund managers. Its quite difficult to find just one especially for the long-term.

3. The book is targeted to HNW individuals with at least USD1M to invest. Many of the strategies are impractical for main street retail investors.

The author clearly discloses the last two items but the Yale Endowment is a cautionary example of the exceptional case inferring that your results will vary, if not disappoint.
