Présentation de l'éditeur

Three love stories. Two worlds. Six characters trying bravely, if not always wisely, to make their romantic destinies come out right—if not in this lifetime, well, maybe in the next.

Set partly in Santa Barbara and its nearby wine country, and partly in a spare, secular, and strangely believable version of the Afterlife, the book employs a light touch in treating serious themes of family damage, second chances, and forgiveness.

Darcy Barnett—a chef on the brink of thirty, with issues when it comes to trusting men—meets Paul DeFiore, a 34-year old winemaker with family burdens of his own. They are so right for each other that it terrifies them both. Hugh Barnett—Darcy’s father, a charming philanderer who created Darcy’s mistrust in the first place—is determined to help them get together. Inconveniently, he’s no longer among the living; no matter, he has two compelling reasons to find a way. He needs to be reconciled with his daughter before he can rest easy, and he’s hoping, in the Afterlife, for a rapprochement with Sheila, the wife he cheated on and failed to appreciate, and who divorced him back on Earth. Along the way, he also meets Manny Klein, whose tragedy was meeting the love of his life too soon, and who for half a century has been hoping to see Emma again—somewhere, somehow, anywhere.

Unabashedly romantic, often funny, THE ANGELS’ SHARE interweaves the stories of these three sets of lovers. It taps into the universal yearning to believe that those who were most important in our lives are never altogether gone; that death is not oblivion, but a state in which people can finally tell the truth because the truth no longer hurts; and that love will conquer all--given enough time.

Shames usually writes great South Florida stories (which for some disappointing reason are not available on Kindle). So I bought this one. Very different but very enjoyable.

Finally, one of those wonderful weekends at the beach completely immersed in the NEW LARRY SHAMES BOOK!!! I have missed the wit, intelligence, insight, and incredibly light hearted way Larry Shames deals with ALL his subjects. Larry tackles life's ups and downs with a light touch that belies the depth of understanding one gains in reading his book. The characters in this book feel real to life (especially mine) and I found I really cared about what happened to them! I know you will LOVE this book!

How nice to read a love story without cynicism, violence, or creepiness--one where the suspense comes from rooting for the characters instead of waiting to see who gets bitten in the neck! This is storytelling with a lot of heart, and a lot to say about family relationships. The main character, Darcy, is a young woman with Daddy issues--the issues are painful, but she confronts them with such spirit that you feel good about, and indentify with, her battles. Paul, Darcy's love interest, is a sweet guy, good to his mother, and a winemaker besides--the kind of catch that every young woman wants to meet. I won't spoil the fun by talking about all the twists and turns (and help from The Other Side) that Darcy and Paul go through as they blunder toward getting together. I'll just say this book was as delicious as a box of chocolate-covered strawberries!

Larry Shames' long-awaited new book serves up the wit, wisdom, and humor that are his trademarks. Shames' wry humor is a sustained bass note beneath the pitch perfect dialogue of his quirky but endearing characters. Hidden amongst the pleasures of the three intertwined love stories and mouth-watering wine descriptions, Shames plants subtle insights into the mistakes we all make in navigating toward love. Angel's Share is a leisurely and luxurious read, ripe with the richness of romance. But just like life, there's thunder and lightning rain and hail, exhaustion and exhilaration. As one of Shames' characters points out to Paul, the winemaker: "Trying to love someone, that's not a complication. That's the hearts and guts of it[life]." I suggest you buy the book and a bottle of wine. And share both with someone you love.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Funny Book That's also Intelligent. And Vice Versa. 27 mai 2012

Full disclosure: I know Laurence Shames. But then again, I'm in the writing biz, so I know a lot of writers. And what you need to know is that I don't usually rave about their writing. This time, though, I'll make an exception.

It's not easy to fit distinct characters, human insight, and laughs into one novel, let alone a single page, but Shames has pulled it off before (his Key West books, "The Naked Detective"), and he does it again here. The characters in this book all seem real enough to make you share both their pain and their laughs--and I found myself rooting for them like crazy. The main love story is sweet yet believable. Speaking of "believable," the family relationships ring so true that I cringed a few times between laughs.

The author lives in California, and the way he writes about Santa Barbara makes you understand why almost everybody else on the planet wants to move there. More full disclosure: I do NOT want to move there. But if anyone could talk me into it, it's Shames.

Some of the scenes in "Angels' Share" take place in the Afterlife, too -- a gambit that could have turned the story into sentimental mush, or at the very least made it less believable, yet the Afterlife scenes are as credible as a sunny day in Santa Barbara wine country. This book is fun. And wise, to boot. I hope you'll all thank me for not having revealed the plot.
