Exceptionally fine scholarly publication 25 juin 2014
Par Sharon A. Call - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
This is a comprehensive scholarly review of archaeological research, publications, and sites of early Chinese culture. It is beautifully written, well-organized and edited, includes copious references, black and white illustrations and maps which identify sites mentioned in the text. The authors reflect the most up-to-date methodology and philosophy in approaching such a huge span of time and space, from the Eneolithic to the early Bronze Age.

Despite the inherent nationalistic character of Chinese archaeology, there is an ever-increasing cognizance of cultural exchange and appreciation for the contributions and influences of regional and peripheral cultures. This is highlighted throughout the book, from the transmission of certain plants and animals to the economy of the Central Plains (such as wheat and cattle) to the introduction of metallurgy and chariots from the northwestern regions. The gradual transition from hunter-gatherer to early complex societies to state formation is explored in reasonable detail with excellent interpretations and summaries. As a reference tool, the book is invaluable, but not a quick read. It is possible to skim sections devoted to site analysis and focus mainly on key introductions and conclusions. Since Chinese language research is not accessible to most readers, having this current review of research within a global perspective is exceptional.

The chapters entitled `Environment and Ecology', `Domestication of Plants and Animals" provide a necessary background. For content and context the chapters `Bronze Cultures of the Northern Frontiers and Beyond', `The Late Shang Dynasty and its Neighbors' and `Chinese Civilization in Comparative Perspective' were particularly interesting to me.

If you are enthusiastic about archaeology and culture, you will find this book to be an outstanding contribution to your understanding of human prehistory (even if your focus is on another part of the world). This book is truly impressive.

For Academics, Not the Layman 27 novembre 2014

Very dry reading and lacking in interpretation of evidence. Specialists will probably appreciate much more than the general reader interested in ancient China.
