5.0 étoiles sur 5 Initiation from a Traditional/Existential/Analytic Viewpoint 4 juin 2001
Par Randal Nerhus - Publié sur Amazon.com
Following the line of thought of anthropologists Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner and scholar of religions Mircea Eliade, psychoanalyst Robert Moore has added "THE ARCHETYPE OF INITIATION: Sacred Space, Ritual Process, and Personal Transformation."
Van Gennep began with the three passages (separation, liminal, and aggregation) of initiatory ritual. Turner expanded the concept of liminal (on the threshold) to include more specific dynamics of liminal space. Eliade, from his perspective, has emphasized the combination of hierophany (manifestation of the sacred) and kratophany (manifestation of power) as a necessary part of initiatiory ritual worldwide.
In this book Robert Moore details the need and role of ritual elders in creating and containing the sacred space required in all transformative initiations in human experience. Though the book is fairly specialized, it is written with a minimal amount of technical terms. "The Archetype of Initiation" was originally presented as a series of lectures and essays from 1984 to 1995.
Throughout the book I found the audience's questions matched my own and the Dr. Moore's answers made the concepts clearer. Also, myself having been prey to previous initiations that have been toxic, I found this book to be a beneficial guide to use before one submits to any initiation.
Psychotherapists, leaders in the Men's Movement, as well as people involved in youth counseling, prison rehabilitation, clergy, and even bewildered parents of teens will find this book very useful.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Guidebook for the Dark Pilgrimage 4 octobre 2001
Par William Demaree - Publié sur Amazon.com
No one understands male psychology better than Robert Moore. In this compilation of lectures, he offers comforting (and sometimes not so comforting) explanations of what happens at those terrifying but oh so necessary transitions in our lives. As one who is now in the "belly of the whale," I can say that this book has helped me understand how and why I got here, it has helped me understand what I am experiencing, and it has given me guidance for what I can/will/must do when this dark period of my life is over. If you are at mid-life, read this book!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Explains How We Get To Be Men And Women 10 janvier 2013

In this book, Moore clarifies how we make the transition from child to adult, helping you see how this doesn't happen as efficiently in our society as it did when this transition was a "life or death" matter for the community. However, the lesson here is (more broadly) about personal transformational change. If you want to really change your life - making your actions in the world more aligned to your values - this describes the process, and the challenges therein.

Moore's prior works (read "King Warrior Magician Lover") explains the basics of the human personality. To better understand how you got there (growing out of childhood), read this. His "Facing The Dragon" talks about how the unpleasant side of the human personality, and the often-untapped power inside each of us.

Highly recommended!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Robert Moore's Boldest Book to Date 30 juillet 2006
Par Thomas J. Farrell - Publié sur Amazon.com
THE ARCHETYPE OF INITIATION is Jungian theorist Robert Moore's boldest book to date. He identifies the archetype of initiation as the source of mental breakdowns as well as the source of the psychological process of mourning - mourning nondeath losses in our lives as well as mourning losses of significant persons in our lives due to their deaths (also known as bereavement). In addition, the archetype of initiation is central to all significant life transitions or passages from a now old phase of life to a new phase.

Whew! It sounds like the archetype of initiation is a central archetype in our lives. This is why I say that this is Moore's boldest book to date.

As Moore explains all the different kinds of life transitions that involve this archetype, he works with Victor Turner's terminology about liminal space and time. Liminal space and time is a kind limbo, a kind of stepping out from ordinary space and time, as frequently happens in bereavement, for example. Turner sees this kind of limbo experience as a destructuring the structure of ordinary space and time.

But Moore works with a very different view from Turner's. Turner maintained that modern people did not have access to the destructuring experience of liminal time and space. For Turner, modernity provides modern people with cultural conditioning that closes down the possibility that they will experience liminal time and space, even though modern people appear to experience liminal time and space in bereavement. In any event, Moore takes the position that modern people can also experience liminal time and space in the context of psychotherapy, at least under the optimal conditions of psychotherapy. In addition, Moore argues that modern people need to have a social community in which they can work out some of their life transitions with the support and assistance of other people in those communities.

In connection with the liminality that people experience in bereavement, Moore also refers to chronic liminality. But he does not venture to explore and explain chronic liminality. He just notes in passing that this does occur. I wish that he had explored this further.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 If you want to understand sacred space, initiation and transformation, this is the book. 30 janvier 2013

This book is a superb outline of the process of initiation/transformation and represents a fabulous distillation of current wisdom on the topic.

Robert Moore outlines the 3 stages of transformation - submission, containment and enactment, and is able to bring the concepts to life because he himself is clearly familiar with the process. The latter is key for a topic such as this as it is not a topic for academics who like to babble on about intellectual concepts but a real life experience that needs documenting in detail from real experiences so that others can make use of it.

I am 40 years old and for the last year have been undergoing tremendous upwellings as memories of 10 years of extreme childhood trauma have begun to surface. This book has been an outstanding help in providing me with a clear framework for my experiences and guidance on each step. It matches my own experiences and gives me a clarity of understanding that is literally life saving, and that is why I consider it second to none.

It is a truly excellent book but will probably only make sense to those who have had first hand experience with the mysteries within the unconscious.
