A First of its kind until now 24 mai 2014

When Dr. Licks released this book, it was practically the first of its kind. There were many blues based books but this was one of the first to discuss R&B guitarist. And he nailed it! The examples aren't that difficult so I would suggest this book for intermediate-beginners and beyond. Each mini lessons are broken down into 4 bar grooves, which by the way make up most of the grooves for the songs played back then (e.g. a 4 bars groove in layered parts). All examples are played on the cassettes and the examples are listed in TAB and music form. The examples focus only on the background rhythm players, not the r&b guitar solo which is blues based anyway. However if you want to learn both this r&b rhythm style and solo licks, then check out the list below for current books. THIS BOOK ISN'T WORTH 400.00 WHICH IS THE ASKING PRICE OF THE 3RD PARTY SELLERS; if they come down to 25.00 perhaps, then I would recommend buying this book. Otherwise, check below for alternatives selections.

As stated there are many current books published since the 90s which covers this style of playing along with soloing over r&b, funk, and jazz blues style. They are well worth purchasing... Plus those books come with CDs (not cassette tape) and written in TAB. All are currently sold here at Amazon.

alternative selections:
Rhythm & Blues You Can Use (Book/CD) by John Ganapes
Progressive Funk and R&B Guitar Method Book/CD by Peter Gelling
Birth of the Groove: R and B, Soul and Funk Guitar: 1945-1965 (Inside the Blues) by Dave Rubins

CHEERS!

A true vintage item...
come with a real tape, which suggests how old it the book.

I know this book for a while, I owned it back in the day and lost it since.
Bought it again on Amazon, and working with students on this book.
Great fundamentals, for every student;

If you don't know the book:
It gives short examples (4-8 measures) of grooves/riffs, from this era.
Both guitar parts are written in notes and tabs, as well as the bass part.
Drums part is written as well, which makes it a good book for drummer and bassist too.

The tape (which I converted to a CD), offer all the tracks, when the 1st guitar is panned to one channel, second guitar to second channel, so you can easily isolate or eliminate one guitar, or the other by tweaking the balance knob, which getting less and less common (ipod for example, doesn't have it).
